Shirakawa-go (Shirakawa Village , 白川郷) is a Japanese mountain settlement in what was once considered a wild and unexplored region. Because of the area’s natural environment, with high mountains and heavy snowfall, interaction with neighboring regions was limited. However, this also created the conditions for the development of unique cultural practices and lifestyles. Now registered as a World Cultural Heritage site, Shirakawa village is famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.
Gassho-zukuri means "constructed like hands in prayer", as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. The architectural style developed over many generations and is designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region during winter.
🔸One of Shirakawa-go’s key climate features is that its snowfall is some of Japan’s heaviest. Snow falls from December to March, depositing around 2 to 3 m over the area (record snowfall of 4.5 m).
🔸Many of the farmhouses are now restaurants, museums or minshuku, where you can stay overnight.
