Love how they showed the contrast between Aizawa and Present Mic, with Aizawa being the emotional loud one and Mic the serious one, showing how both handle grief different
The fact that Kurogiri was revealed to be a unique Nomu this whole time was one thing. That he was an old friend and classmate of Aizawa’s era of heroes was another thing entirely.
You don't usually see Aizawa's VA do many heartbreaking scenes, since he always plays serious charecters like Aizawa and Yami, but man, he and Mic's VA really broke me here.
Have you ever seen Bungou stray dogs? If you want an incredibly cool, serious and collected character portayed by the same VA of Aizawa, that ends up in some of the most heartbreaking scenes in anime history, you're definitely gonna love bungou stray dogs s2 (He doesn't appear in the first season)
Can we talk about how terrifying that would actually be. Like you are literally seeing a friend of yours who you thought was dead in a villains body I wouldn’t be able to sit in that room at all.
I had a friend who died in an accident when I was a kid... I imagined suddenly finding out that he actually survived but was tortured and became an insane criminal. Let me tell you, that's some mindf*ck right there...
"I didnt want the students to turn out like you - a hero who devalues his own life for the sake of justice I wanted them to turn out like you - a hero who can motivate others Because i want the greatest heroes to live a long life!" This was the peak of the episode, showing how much Aizawa admired Shirakumo while hating him for throwing his life away, motivating him to protect his students from that destiny, the storytelling is that good
Man, it gives a whole new flavor to Aizawa’s insistence that Izuku stay near him during the Shie Hassaikai raid. It was less “you haven’t yet earned my trust back”, more “if I let you go off on your own, you’ll end up another Shirakumo, and I can’t stand for that to happen.”
For anyone interested, read bnha vigilantes. There's a lot of backstory on characters not shown in the bnha anime. Shirakumo, midnight, aizawa, stain, even america's top hero
It becomes even more twisted when you realize that shirakumo uses the last of his existence/entity as himself, within his body; to show Aizawa and mic that he can’t break free even if he tries. Yet at the same time, that he fully heard them and that he wishes he could return. The half side of his face that shows through, he forced it’s appearance so they could see him one last night and understand it’s not him anymore. It’s hasn’t been him controlling his own body any longer since he “died” Mha truly is a great anime.
@@chickenosaurus7474 It’s explained in the scene itself and in the process of nomu/quirk alteration. So when they undergo nomu/quirk alteration, they lose their humanity/mind. Due to either the presence of quirk combination that their dna/body cannot handle thus resulting in a mindless state or due to the presence of the shared conscious. In shirakumo here, they used nomu alteration and revival of conscious from a dead body. Shirakumo’s mind was not only twisted from death, but the process of nomu alteration. So they restored his mind, but it was twisted into a different conscious. Which is what thus creates him as the nomu Kurogiri. It’s actually a real life concept in ways. When someone dies and is brought back to life, due to the disconnect in their mental synapses while being dead, their conscious changes either slightly or largely. So in this scene, shirakumo even after being revived and his mind being altered, that’s where you see shirakumo break through the alteration to show basically the last spark of his conscious/humanity before being fully consumed by kurogiri. Thus the nomu-fication was fully complete. The spike in emotion was the only thing that allowed shirakumo’s conscious to break through in the first place.
@@johnkyl123 I actually explore this in a fanfic I'm writing. The character in question was experimented on to become a high-class Nomu, but escaped during a lab accident. She was an early prototype and the process hadn't been perfected yet, so although she lost her memories of who she had been before the experiments, she managed to maintain her free will and sense of humanity, although the former only managed to survive thanks to the kindness of a stranger who took her in and hid her. This colors her worldview, as she views small, everyday acts of kindness as more valuable and meaningful than showy acts of power and heroism.
I think shirakumo in this scene recognizes his mistake of devaluing his own life and is recalling the moment where he says “if one of us messes up, the other two can cover.” He gives them the shred of info he can because he knows they’re gonna cover for him, cuz they’re all heroes.
Which is why they should’ve done this part the same way they did with Kakashi and Obito: Have a couple episodes focused on Aizawa and Shirakumo’s full backstory AND THEN throw in this reveal. Should’ve saved this for next season instead of doing this now
If you ever go watch Bungo Stray Dogs, he plays a character by the name of Oda Sakunosuke and that was probably one of the most impactful emotional moments I think I’ve heard of Junichi Suwabe’s VA up until this episode!
@@therocketman8933 personally, I don’t think eri could revive him. Even if they were able to get all the mist off and stuff, it’d probably just be his corpse laying there. Not alive, just a dead body.
When aizawa said his eyes were "unbearably dry" while crying it reminded me of colonel mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist when he said "It's raining" when he was crying. It hit so hard
Idc how many times I've seen it, Oboro's totally normal, living face suddenly sliding out of a supposedly long dead and changed beyond recognition body will never not be extremely unsettling and creep the hell out of me and the anime somehow made it worse
its also interesting because that face appears after a very brief panel/frame of aizawa staring as intensely as he can into kurogiri, he wants so incredibly badly to get his friend back and his quirk is slightly helping in that moment i think. kind of like finally shaking that cage that shirakumo is stuck in inside kurogiri with his quirk
Yeah. They really missed an opportunity to announce a vigilantes anime or even have it run alongside the main series. It would be possible considering Slime Diaries got a series, and that's only digital. They did a good job showing off shirakumo here but I feel like the backstory from vigilantes is really needed too.
Vigilantes SPOILERS I wonder why Midnight wasn't there with them since she was also part of the group. They basically grew up together. Weird from Horikoshi on not adding her.
Exceptional voice acting here. Hit me super hard. One of my favorite episodes because it shows Aizawa vulnerable and I love when shows show strong characters being vulnerable. Aizawa is one of the best sensei characters in anime.
I was waiting on this being animated needless to say I wasn't disappointed the emotion shown from the voice of aizawa was amazing and really showed grief and gave another dimension to him
Cant wait to hear this Dubbed. Regardless of your preference, MHA has one of the BEST dubs, and for Dialog heavy scenes, its fun to compare the two, especially when emotions run high
One thing that I love about this anime… it just doesn’t forget about their characters. There were so many times where I thought these side characters should never be explained would just be left there as support and not have their own little story or back story.
I still like to believe Shirakumo can still be saved. We still don't know the full process of a Nomu or if its possible to reverse the process, but since Shirakumo is a special kind of Nomu, we might get some special treatment for him. Although, i hope it comes with a few consequences, for example Shirakumo can no longer go back to his previous, staying like Kurogiri.
@F3VER She could revert the living parts of his body, probably his brain, in order to try and get his memories back, but i think im reaching at this point.
@@Demaad yeah, they should have already been made vigilantes and have this episode and his death in it happen around the same time. That would have been flames.
@@michaelcolon4162 They didn’t even have to animate the entire Vigilante series. They could’ve just used a couple episodes for Aizawa’s backstory from Vigilantes and then show this reveal (but that would’ve cut My Villain Academia) so they should’ve saved that and this episode for NEXT season (in my opinion anyway)
People are talking about Aizawa's feelings and making comparisons with this scene and stuff, but I'm thinking something else… This scene brings up a big question: It almost seems as though All For One has learned of a way to reanimate the dead, as well as alter people to create the Nomus. But this scene… does this mean the alterations can be undone? Could they possibly be able to bring Shirakumo back to life? They can still fulfill their dream of starting an agency…
Gareth Green Obviously my suggestion is something to be explored in the long run. Maybe Kurogiri will be killed off, but die as Shirakumo, and as a Hero. Or perhaps he will live on in this form, given a second chance at life, since he sacrificed himself in his first life.
Powers and users personality make up the quirks. In the same manner Blackwhips user was present and able to communicate with midoriya. Shirokuma merely emerged since his quirk was the base of the melded quirks
@@foxcheese101 this still means that he is the foundation of Kurogiri and it means that he is aside Hood the only Nomu with intact personality so i thinkt htat the combi of Aizawas Quirk that surpressed the Quirk combi that is "Warpgate" also the alterations partially included with the personal reactions with his once friends reawakened Oboro and a glimps of his true persona behind the black Fog.
I have been waiting for this scene since the chapter came out. I got close to tears then, and I am close to tears now. I was worried that the directors wouldn't be able to convey how important shirakumo was to aizawa and yamada without bringing in more of vigilantes, but I think they did a really good job.
the depressed teacher with a dead best friend trope. Aizawa and Kakashi both were harder on their students for that reason. their situations were definitely different but they both make me sad
F'in phenomenal! This scene was just.. powerful. BONES has been catching heat for Season 5 (whether the pacing / arc rearranging was really their fault or TOHO's, I digress), but they have been handling these emotional beats (the Endeavor family, Shirakumo, etc) with absolutely care and knocking it out of the park. Studio BONES has still got it, folks. And with MVA/Meta-Liberation Arc finally here, we're gonna solidify their superiority.
@@tendofan Remember the last two episodes of season 4... If Studio Bones does the same thing with MVA (adapting 3+ chapter per episode) this will be pure fire if the pacing feels not too rushed. It worked at least for the season 4 finale!
Im anime only, but I read vigilantes, and honestly I don't think that this episode would have hit as hard as it did if I didn't see the aizawa arc in vigilantes
Ayo, where’s your other brother, man? I saw Just Some Guy With A Mask up further in the comments, but have yet to see Just Some Guy Without A Mustache…
I know right... i haven't read vigilantes but this feels like it's something really important... i mean it's Kurogiri who we knew since the beginning. But this Oboro guy hasn't even been mentioned one time before this episode...
I was sobbing, oboro is one of my favourite characters and even though it's sad I though I would have to wait years to see him animated, so I'm really happy about that :D
Aizawa was my favorite character for a long time. Well… I guess Aizawa and Mic are about level, actually. Though, I think I connect more on a personal level with Mic than with Aizawa, at least for now. They’re like the two sides of the coin that make up my personality. It’s very interesting to study introspectively.
It's weird to see something that first appeared in Vigilantes in the main series, like design wise and not something like Trigger. Like if you only watched/read the main series this came from literally nowhere but here, but if you read Vigilantes there was the whole bit leading up to this. I kinda want to see the Vigilantes make an appearance in the main series now...
