Shiraz is know as the city of poets because it is the home of two great poets, i.e., Hafez and Saadi.
Our today's city tour is in Hafezieh (tomb of Hafez Shirazi). Hafez Shirazi (considered as the Shakespeare of Iran) was one of the greatest and most admired poets of the 14th century. He was known as Hafez (which means memorizer) because he memorized the Quran at an early age.
The mausoleum is on the North of Shiraz and South of Quran Gate. It has two courtyards, the northern and southern which are separated by a Hall. The Northwestern part has a cozy teahouse and cafe and in the west side, there is a small graveyard related to Zand era, Qavam family and famous Shirazi residents.
This place has a peaceful and poetic atmosphere which makes it an enjoyable experience for everyone. One interesting thing is that you shouldn't be surprised if you see someone holding a box full of envelopes with a parrot on the top!
These envelopes are called "Fal-e Hafez", a kind of fortune telling from Hafez poems. Iranians believe that those who have a question in mind, trapped in dilemma, or like to know what future has in store for them, they can seek to find the answer in the poems of Hafez!
