Shirley Abicair and Cicely Tyson on "To Tell the Truth" (March 25, 1963)

Folk singer/author Shirley Abicair appears as a contestant and actress Cicely Tyson is one of the impostors in this 1963 episode of "To Tell the Truth" with host Bud Collyer and panelists Tom Poston, Peggy Cass, Gene Rayburn, and Phyllis Newman.
At the end of the segment Ms. Abicair briefly plays "Waltzing Matilda" (which is not a waltz, but never mind that) on the zither.
Ms. Tyson identifies herself as "a student at the New School for Social Research" in New York and not as an actress, which makes me wonder if maybe I've got this all wrong.

Cicely Tyson was 39 years old on this show and she doesn't look it at all. She looks like she could be 19 or 20 yrs old. Wow that's amazing!!!

I remember seeing Cicely Tyson at this period in her life. She also did East Side West Side at this time. Her beauty is timeless.

Shirley’s Mother, Alice, was married to my great-uncle Norman. When they lived in Port Lincoln, South Australia, they would sometimes invite our family to watch their TV (long before we got our own). Auntie Alice was always so proud when she could say “my Shirley’s on TV” in programs like Australian Bandstand. I never got to meet Shirley, but always remembered the name. A truly lovely singer and so pretty as well.

According to Wikipedia, Cicely Tyson had been acting on theater, movies and tv for several years prior to her appearance on TTTT but she made no mention of being an actress there.

I'm wondering if they got the year right on this RU-vid video. By 1963 was she still a student of Sociology at age 39? Like you said, she was already acting and the chances of someone on the panel having seen her in something would have been possible.

I was born in 1960. I enjoyed watching and to see Cecile Tyson. I never knew she was on to tell the truth unbelievable. She looks the same just a little older. She is so nice.

I don't recall many occasions when an impostor and a central character were not the same race. Interesting that such an occasion occurred this early.

JayTemple Actually, they used this gambit at least several times on TTTT--and in fact, it happened in the 1950s, whereas this show is from 1963.

JayTemple, I thought that since I knew Cicely Tyson was a black woman the other two would have been also. I’m still watching so I don’t know which one is Shirley Abicair yet.

Coincidentally, Rod McKuen was an impostor in an episode in which Gene Rayburn was also a panelist. Unlike Ms. Tyson, McKuen did acknowledge being a songwriter.

American Home Products- and their subsidiary, Whitehall Laboroatories [Anacin]- was the evening's sponsor- in those days, it was the custom for the sponsor to place a "billboard" on the panel's desk. Cicely later co-starred with George C. Scott in a controversial CBS dramatic series in the fall of '63, "EAST SIDE- WEST SIDE".

I kept thinking Number 2 looks awfully familiar. I didn't realize till the reveal that she was Cicely Tyson. Had never heard of Shirley Abicair before this, though.

Tumbarumba ... LOL! OK - pity nothing was explained about this place as it deserved the disclosure. The name itself is aboriginal - I think the locality is in what Is called tribal First Nation land of Wirajuri). It's a town in NSW between Albury and Canberra as the crow flies. Shirley Abicair from South Australia is truly amazing. Wished I had known of her better.

The real Shirley had to rein it in the entire time of the questioning, but iwhen it was her time to sing, she was delightful and very pleasant to listen to! You could tell Cicely was having fun pretending to be a native African.

I just saw this episode a few minutes ago and it made me do a double take when she said who she was.I thought I didn't hear correctly and looked her up. Wikipedia doesn't mention this appearance in her tv credits. When I searched this show,it comes right up.

Doubt if she will read this, but back in 1961, I wrote to here and received back a short personal reply on a Compliments Slip which I still have today. Even as a 7 year old, I was madly in love with here and would love to meet her just ONCE, so Shirley, if you read this, drop me a note. I am now 62 years old! How time flies? How many fake Shirley's will respond to this I wonder?
