Saw this at Sundance ! Everyone put this on your “must see list”. Per usual Elizabeth Moss is brilliant.

A fine film. Some of it slanted toward her later years as well as earlier events, with no mention of her four children which she wrote about in one of two memoirs titled, "Life Among The Savages." I don't think Shirley Jackson was as difficult as portrayed in the film. The writers appeared to reflect on some of her stories like "We Have Always Lived in the Castle," in which there was much distrust between the villagers or townspeople and the two women in the novel, which would be her last. Shirley Jackson died at 48 years of age. Later in her life, not earlier, she became agoraphobic, it has been reported. I chose in 1984 to do a senior project or independent study on selected works of Shirley Jackson. I wanted to write about poet Benjamin Saltman but Philip Handler, who oversaw Independent Studies, refused to discuss the work of a colleague. I took it mean perhaps he had not read any of his colleague's books of poetry and had no intention of doing that, thus my paper on Jackson. I somehow made it through college and graduated with a 3.325 average; I was not a good student during the primary grades and did not graduate from high school. I very much enjoyed reading Shirley Jackson's short stories, especially her short story titled, "Charles," and her novels, "The Sundial," a very strange book; "The Haunting of Hill House," and especially "We Have Always Lived in the Castle." I also read "Come Along With Me," which I seem to remember was an uncompleted novella-length tale. A movie was made of "Come Along With Me" that is excellent. I love the treatment on Jackson's life for this current film. I was surprised how much I liked the film and would consider purchasing it on DVD. Elizabeth Moss appears to like dark material, as suggested by others here.

So... I went into this without knowing what it's about. And I came out STILL, not knowing what it's about. The acting was incredible but the message behind the random scenes I was witnessing didn't reach me unfortunately. Nothings explained within the movie but I'm sure to someone who already knows the story would enjoy it.

Другая героиня похожа на Сильвию Плат? Это странное совпадение или опять некое шифрование режиссёра? Сильвия Плат была поклонницей Ширли Джексон... и даже просила о встречи, но встреча не состоялась. Странное внешнее сходство, да и во второй половина фильма героиня в полном раздрае и депрессии. Если это действительно некий ход режиссера, то это гениально!!!

This seems insanely disrespectful to Shirley Jackson's memory. Damn.

Too much, all the time, shaking camera effect. Either the camera crew was drunk all the time or the story is so boring they had to add movement to make you sick so you won't notice theire is no real , making sence, ending. When effects are overused then you know the movie is crap

Ridiculous. They had four children. They weren't just neurotic drunkards.

It should be illegal to to apply such heavy handed fiction to a real person’s life, especially when the subject's children are still alive. Sometimes Elizabeth Moss really pulled off the Shirley Jackson look but it’s not worth watching, or supporting, for that.

Tour de force is the term you use when the movie sucks, except for the artsy fartsy types.
