Hey everybody! In todays video, we are sewing a popular summer dress using McCalls 7946 View C. I will be using all the pattern pieces for View C and only omitting the elastic casing on the dress and doing rows of shirring instead. Make sure you check your notions and get the bias tape, elastic for the sleeves and bodice and elastic thread for the shirring. I cut the size 18 for this dress, and I love the fit and really happy with the way the dress came out! Below is a link to the fabric and elastic.
I hope you enjoy the video! Be sure to LIKE, COMMENT & SUBSCRIBE!

Beautiful dress Brittany, love the pattern and your Choice of fabric. Thank you for showing how to sew it together, very helpful information. I think the the only change I would make for myself from the pattern is ,sew the bottom ruffle on right sides together after you have gathered up. Sew up a long 1” finished tube( like your making a belt) gather that piece up , sew on top of seam of dress and ruffle. That way you don’t see any of the wrong side of the fabric when finished. Love watching your videos 🥰

This is such a cute dress and you look so cute in it! I got confused with the last ruffle on the bottom. Did you put right sides together, or did you place the ruffle on top of the right side of the skirt of the dress and then sew it? Also, when you sewed the shirring did you tie off at each end or did you sew continuously from the top to the bottom? Thanks so much for this video. I learned new things and that's what I like about your videos!
@brittanyjjonestv
@brittanyjjonestv 4 года назад
Thank you for watching! Sorry the confusion. Yes I placed the ruffle on top of the right side of the dress and then stitched it. Thats why I went ahead and serged the raw edge of the dress hem. And you stitch it in place lining up the gathering row of the ruffle to the placement line of the dress. Also yes, after each row, I backed stitched and started a new row. Once I was done with the shirring, I did a straight stitch down a side seam just for peace of mind.

This dress is really cute. I'm inclined to think ill create the channel for the neck line but not put elastic in until after I finish the shirring. I think it might be easier, what do you think? Is there a construction reason to put the elastic in first?

Hi there! Great tutorial and beautiful dress! I noticed on the sleeve you said to baste, which we know is temporary. Did you mean to say stitch? Or do you go back at the end and sew it permanently after making some adjustment?

Such a beautiful dress! I made a raglan sleeve elasticized-neckline cotton blouse from Butterick R10632. If I were to start shirring 1/2" below the neckline as you did and go around and around, I would have to shirr the sleeves also. What do you suggest?
@sonyasew2

Q: When u sewing the shirring Is that a straight stitch? When u sew on ruffle do u sew above or below the gathering stitch? Thanks Nice dress and sew alone
@brittanyjjonestv
@brittanyjjonestv 4 года назад
Thank you! Correct, when shirring, I am using a straight stitch, just lengthening the stitch to a 3.5. Nothing else changed with the stitch. And yes, for the ruffle, I am sewing the ruffle directly on the gathering row. If it helps to be able to remove the gathers after you've sewn the stitch, you can stitch a little beside it, but I sewed right onto the gathers.

Hi Brittany, I have a beautiful yellow cotton voile I would love use to make this dress with. My concern is do I use 100% cotton or poly cotton to line the material as it is a bit see through? Suggest a liner that is good for hot weather and as it is lined can the fabric withstand the shirring?

This was a wonderful tutorial. I'm so bummed though because I didn't trace out the elastic pattern piece for the sleeve, for some reason I was thinking I didn't need it and it was for the bodice. And I don't feel like printing and taping all the pattern pieces again 😭 sigh. Looks like I'll need to make another order from pdf printing lol

Oh duh. I realized all I had to do was print the pages that made up that pattern piece for the elastic intead of doing the whole thing again LOL. I do have a question though. Do you think it's possible for the sleeves to skip the bias tape around the curved edge and just fold the edge over to make a casing??
@geraldinegorman9597
@geraldinegorman9597 4 года назад
Hi Britney, I made a top using this pattern but had alot of bother with the sleeves. Where you cut into the notch on the fabric actually ripped. I didn't add the bias binding at the top of the bodice as I used the shirring and didn't think I needed it. Did you have any problems with the sleeves. I love your version and want to try it again. Thank you.
@brittanyjjonestv
@brittanyjjonestv 4 года назад
Geraldine Gorman hi Geraldine, I’m sorry to hear about the sleeve issues. So did you just do a narrow hem at the top or how did you finish the top of the bodice. Also I didn’t have any issues with the sleeves but I did go back just to stitch a little closer to the clip when I attached the bias tape, to prevent any stress at the area.
@geraldinegorman9597
@geraldinegorman9597 4 года назад
@@brittanyjjonestv yes I did do a narrow hem as I though when I was shirring the whole bodice the bias might be bulky! I am giving it another go and this time using bias tape so hopefully it will work ok. Thank you for replying 💕
@heidi2927
@heidi2927 2 года назад
Hi Could I ask, as you are shirring this pattern, did you start with a larger size pattern from the onset? As you said that the fabric needs to be 1.5 times the width of bust measurement, I take it the pattern wouldn't be quite that wide, I'm a bit confused by this. Thank you, I would love to make this and already have this pattern, but I don't quite understand how you're meeting the 1.5 increase. X

Hi Brittany! I decided to try this after watching your tutorial, but there is one thing I keep having to unpick: the sleeve corner. I can't quite see if the two bias channels are supposed to connect and how - on first attempt I ended up with the raw edge of clipped corner exposed, the second time around I got a weird fold once everything was turned to the right side. Do you have any tips on how to do it?
@brittanyjjonestv
@brittanyjjonestv 4 года назад
Karolina Szuchnik hi Karolina! That part is a little troublesome to get the bias tape sewn on and have a clean finish. I stitch really close to that clipped edge, even sewing a little on the bias tape from the sleeve. I’ll upload a close up pic for you too see on the community tab on my channel. Uploading it now.
