If people say that "fancy, flashy" techniques don't work it's usually because they don't have the skill to use the techniques. If you apply the techniques they work, just because you haven't honed the skill doesn't mean it's not viable. I'm not impressed with Brazilian jujitsu, MMA, etc., any more than basic Shotokan or Shito Ryu. When people come up with a "new" style it's usually the same as in the Killer Elite when "Cory" ( correction? ) challenged Kubota - the classical mess is found out not to be such a "mess". My approach is traditional/eclectic and it's the person that masters his system, with possible revisions to fit his body type that matters. If everything's streamlined to MMA " modern " standards then someone's bound to realize that the classical systems had immense value. Also the aesthetic value can't be underestimated - I wonder if Bruce Lee would have longed for the " classical mess " of kata if he had understood it in his older years.
It works. I practice Okinawan Karate for 40 years I´m a 5´dan in Uechi-ryu and 2´dan of Shito-ryu and Karate saved my life once against two guys. It works. Karate is pure self defense.
