Happy to announce I've begun work on remastering SHL2!
What's the goal of the remaster?
- Unify the SHL games to a single codebase to make updates easier + set stage for SHL4
- Modernize the code and make it safer to update
- Improve user experience, especially on mobile
- Raise the overall quality of assets and mechanics to modern standards.
- To increase the size of the map slightly to allow for more room to play
- Make the city feel more dynamic with weather, new functionality + improved layout
- To set the stage for new updates in the future
What's not the goal of the remaster?
- To expand the core gameplay - this isn't SHL4, this is going to be the best version of SHL2
- To completely redo customization - it will be mostly the same systems, just more polished
- To add a ton of new assets - the primary goal is to improve existing before we think about new stuff
Is there a release date?
No official release date yet as I can't focus my efforts full time on it. I expect it will take around 2 months of focused dev time, which probably translated to 4-6 from now. As I've already made this game before, I don't think we have to worry about the same degree of prediction inaccuracy as before.
What will transfer over?
All suits, gamepasses, and bases will transfer over. I will probably be removing gems in favor of a single currency - gems will be converted at a generous rate into this final currency.
Will you remake other SHL games?
Yep! The plan is to remake SHL3 next, then a quick port of SHL1. Depending on how things go, my hope is to also port the original SHL3 map and the SHL3.5 maps.
Will the original games be playable anywhere?
Like with SHL1 my plan is to open source SHL2 and SHL3 at some point after the remasters are released.
Thank you all for your patience over the last 7 years. I've taken the time to work my hardest to become a better game developer, and I'm excited to use what I've learned since to give this game the update its community deserves!
