Mr Shlomo Sand has a sense of justice and humanity. Humanity is what Mr Shlomo Sand is all about. World and humanity needs "Shlomo Sand" to survive. Thank you for posting this clip.
goggle - True, the Caucasian might not be as Jewish or Jewish at all, but what does it matter if others are 'real' Jews? No such thing as a pure race. If you think someone is pure in their ethnic background or race, you're in denial. Thousands of years, tribes mix, occupy, attack, rape each other over millenniums, etc. No such thing as a real Jew no matter how you define it. Peace.
The host is a Canadian citizen from Vancouver. I wonder what he thinks about the state of Israel granting him the privilege (not right) to live in Israel and acquire a citizenship while stripping Palestinian refugees who were cleansed from what is now Israel the right to return 🤔?
They weren't cleansed. In 1948 the Arab states surrounding Israel illegally attacked Israeli citizens, and ethnically cleansed the Jewish people and their over 50 temples from Judea/Samaria. About 700,000 Arabs fled Israel and became the Palestinian refugees. The surrounding Arab countries expelled about 850,000 Jews from their homes, and stole their property--they left with nothing. Israel took them in. The Arab countries did not take in theirs--palestinian refugees are treated like cockroaches in Lebanon. What happened was simply that the Arab attacked, and the Arabs lost the war. Now they blame Israel--Just blame the Jews! BTW, the Arabs who remained in Israel are now citizens of Israel with equal rights to all Israelis.
@@zz-qc6fj Because it is true. his sort has been seen throughout Jewish History. All People's have them. So unhappy about who he was born, and with so much in this World teaching you to hate yourself because of what others have treated you as...it is called generational Stockholm Syndrome. You see this amongst a lot of euroassimilate Ashkies. Just sad. He is more than welcome to go be whatever else he chooses to be. Just take his Communist behind out of Israel, please! In Jewish terms, he sold his Birthright for a mess of pottage. Maybe he will finally go and be French!
@@maracohen5930 He's not self-hating. Jews are not persecuted in Israel, ironicly, Jews have become the previliged by insisting that Israel is the homeland of all Jews instead of all citizens who actually live in Israel, and so the Palestinian become the second-class citizens. Sand is refusing to be a previliged by rejecting the so-called Jewish Identity. Sand has tried to justify and said what he considered right in a situation that is not easy to do so. And that reminds me of Hannah Arendt. Arendt consideref herself as a loyal opposer, on that ground she has raised many valuable criticism about Zionism. And now post-Zionism is just doing her job by being loyal to Israle and point out its wrongs. Sand is one of them. He just wants Israel to develop a better democratic system and be a state for all Israelis.
Professor Shlomo is what a true Jew of Israel should be. He is an exceptional man of character and honesty and his teachings are scientifically based and verified. Well done, Professor!!!
As someone who was born to a Jewish Israeli family, I can tell you that Zionism seeks to assimilate, take ownership of, and ultimately gain total control of all things and people 'Jewish'; for it's own exclusive benefit. Colonial eastern european imposters subservient to a murderous US sponsored criminal supremacist cult, all holed up in an invented lunatic state, an expanding abomination being stolen by force from others at western taxpayers expense. A cult inflicted with an acquisitive materialistic sickness that has succeeded in corrupting and distorting the jewish religion and it's believers, rendering the entire institution no more than a greedy mafioso enterprise of nationalist bullies.
There is no such a thing as a "true jew" of israel infact your statement is a clear misnomer. There's no such thing as a jew for that term was made up just over 300 years ago. It is a derivative of the name "Judah" in hebrew "Yahud" which is one of the 12 tribes of Israel thus to say Jewish State is pertaining to ONE TRIBE! Jeremiah 14.2 clearly states the Judahites and or Jews sre black unto the ground! These ppl are all europeans, antisemites, imposters who've played a huge role in deceiving the entire world! The reason there will be no peace in that part of tge world is because tge true Israelites aren't there and arent supposed to be there until the Messiah returns. They are imposters nothing more!
The Host should asked his question await and allow Dr Sands to have his answer or answers without being interrupted he cut him off twice out of impulse.
Jews are an Ethnoreligious People. Not a “Race” as westerners identify such. You can convert to Judaism from anything land anywhere, provided you meet Halachic standards, which is tantamount to a Tribal Adoption. Then there is endogamous marital bias, so by the third generation post a conversion/adoption, this individual is grafted to the basic NW Semitic Tribal Ethnic Matrix who are the ancestors physically and culturally of the Jewish People.
He represents what a real jew should look like... Promote equality, democracy, etc...which jews were the champions THEN to promote a jew only state is HYPOCRACY... What are GREAT MAN
Sorry, anyone who turns his back on his past and his heritage? If he is not a member of the Ethnoreligious People called Jews? He needs to move out of Israel. He has no reason to be there. And yes, we do have a coomon heritage, but not him, by his own choice of being a euroassimilate. Move to France.
@@maracohen5930 the concept of a country defined by any one dominant religion is fundamentally undemocratic. It's like trying to make USA a Mormon state or Christian state. It is blatant discrimination. Additionally this whole idea of a people claiming a "god given right" to a geographical location based on antiquated religious fantasy is laughable. It based on fantasy, lies accepted as history and a sick sense of privilege/entitlement Having said this, Israel exists today as a real country and as such it should and has the right ( just any sovereign nation) to be just that. A nation for its citizens where citizens are free to exercise freedom of religion, not at the expense of discriminating against another. What has been hidden from the wise and the prudent is revealed to the babes and the sucklings. The lie is fast losing its power and the gig will soon be up
Actually no, it is not, certainly when the Indigenous Group is an Ethnoreligious People. There are a number of forms of Democracies, you appear to be thinking straight majority rules sorts of democracy. Otherwise known as "Mobocracy". Such as caused the death of Socrates. Great Britain is considered a Representative Democracy, and they have a State Religion, as does Costa Rica, and any number of Democracies. What is more to the point is do minority religions have protections within the context of such a State, most of the MENA Region States DO have a formal State Religion, but no protections for their minority citizens. @@curtisduplessis2242
Shlomo Sand appears to be the most prominent Jewish intellectual in Israel; to the extent that throughout his public life he adhered to the ethics of his profession as a reliable and credible historian. His implacable rigor with which he exercises his profession and his astonishing courage to defend the truth give him an unrivaled aura throughout the world. For this, he is highly respected in circles of Arab intellectuals. For example, he was not afraid to publicly reveal that he had searched every library in the West to find a single history book discussing the forced expulsion of Jews from Palestine two thousand years ago; alas he found nothing of the sort. Therefore, such a hunt for Jews never took place, but it is purely a lie of Zionist propaganda to deceive world opinion. During a televised tête-à-tête with Mayer Habib a few years ago, Shlomo Sand ridiculed his opponent by accusing him of his dual nationality, saying "you want two states; a state where you work and a state for your well-deserved vacation..." Bravo Shlomo Sand for your clarity of mind and hats off to your activism with a human and humanist face
The original jews are the palestinian people, who were ethnically cleansed by invading zionists alien to the land. The third temple, Alaqsa, was built by the people of jerusalem, many jews who converted to islam during its construction upon the liberation of jerusalem from roman rule and the return of palestinian jews to jerusalem in 632-634 ad. The invading zionists, according to Israeli author Shlomo Sand in his book "The invention of the Jewish people are jewish converts alien to palestine. In the 8th century ad the Khazar kingdom in ukraine converted to judaism and would go on to make the ashkenazi jewish population in europe. Yemenis converted to judaism during the yemeni kindom o Himyar in the 5th century ad during the rule of Dul Nawas. There were jewish kingdoms in iraq and north africa as well. The palestinians are the eternal natives of the land. Free Palestine.
He speaks logic and truth. Jewishness is a race, not a religion. Club is a good term, nobody can convert to Judaism and you can only be a Jew if your mother is a Jew. You can’t be a Jew and an atheist at the same time. Just like you can’t be a Christian or Muslim and be an atheist at the same time.
The title of his book,is realy a Jewish sense of joking: full of self spot(the strongest jokes are like that) and creating such a paradox,as feed for the sense of awareness: if your religies or not as Jew,you will be forever part of the Jewish family.
"As an anthropologist" (which of course he is not, he's a French film expert), can Prof. Sand really seperate Jewish religion and put it in a vacuum without the history, without the traditions, without the culture that are inseperable from the religion? An atheist Israeli Jew today will still celebrate Passover, fast on Yom Kippur and teach his kids to the same in Hebrew. He's part of the tradition of the Jewish people, even if today he's not necessarily an Orthodox or a Reformist.
I celebrate Christmas but that doesn't make me a "secular christian"... and most American Jews (that I know at least) don't observe half of what you've listed above, though many do celebrate Christmas, and with trees and all not just eating Chinese food, even if like me they could care less about Jesus and find the concept of a God laughable. Oh, and Sand is not primarily a film critic. He's a historian, it's very easy to find that out. Historians generally have some grasp of anthropology.
fercos33 Observing all, or half, or a third is not mandatory. Observing just some is enough. All come from the same source. Peoplehood, not religion. And, yes, I've got news for you: you are a "secular christian"! All of your culture, tradition and world view is based on Christianity. So even if you don't give an F about God or Jesus in your daily life, Christianity is as inseparable from your life and your environment as Judaism is from the life of the Jews. And Sand IS a film critic. He's historical training ends with a mere BA. All of his further academic research career dealt with France's "intellectual history" and "relations between history and film". He's as phony as a Kosher pig!
And a Jew who grows up in an entirely "secular Christian" (as you call it, but whatever) environment, save one communist parent say who has Jewish roots, doesn't absorb any of this overwhelming societal culture? He somehow remains a hermetically sealed Jew? You can be so sure about someone you've never met? I am missing a biological rather than environmental aspect here? I am sorry you are seem uncomfortable with the messy cultural free for all that many Americans grow up in. It has a homogenizing effect a lot of the time. My moral code differs from my Jewish friends in no discernible way, no matter what you might insist. Religious shennanigans that transpired a long time ago are but one of myriad cultural influences that create our consciousness, no? You and Shlomo share one thing in common: you both think you can tell people who they are and why they think what they think, rather than just letting them decide on their own identity and recognizing that the inherent complexity of the matter defies any essentializing or generalizing. Culture and identity are two of the more complicated human issues out there, you both seem to approach them in a rather reductivist way. Intellectual History is a real area of History, if it doesn't meet your litmus test, then that's between you two. I wish you well in any case, and thanks for being (relatively) civil on a pretty touchy subject, especially on a forum such as this, really.
fercos33 It seems that as an American, you give your culture too much credit, with the typical idealistic approach of the "messy cultural free for all" slogan. The American culture stands firmly on the shoulders of Christian white men. And while I agree with you (and disagree with Sand) that people are essentially free to choose their own identity, I'm also confident there's an objective historical path to identity, one can trace. And Intellectual History (as well as Film History) are perfectly fine with me. My problem is with a peson who specializes in those, and then goes on to write a book on history/anthropology. Appreciate the conversation! :)
Except in the past, all such as Sand had to do was convert to the dominant culture religion, slander and libel his ethnoreligious birth People as to reason why he converted and to please his new masters. Now? Jewish World are just sort of stuck with their “As a Jew” BS. Very dishonest, zero integrity, but there you have such as Sand, Pappe, et al.
I'd rather be a sparrow atop a house top than a pelican of the wilderness who just got blown in off the wind and has yet to figure things out. The answer is to buy a Jerusalem compass!
His message (Prof. Sand) is completely contradictory. I happen to be a Christian, but the reality of the matter is not only evident from a Biblical perspective, but also from the perspective of modern history. I happen to think the more Jews identify with and appropriate their cultural faith, Judaism, the better it is not just for the Jews, but for the rest of the world. God's basic promises of blessing the Jews for observing His commandments, as well as using them to bless the rest of the world is an easily verifiable and observable historical fact. The same can be said of His punishments on His people for disobedience, and by extension His punishments on the nations who set themselves at enmity with Him. The freedoms and societal advancements we in the West have come to cherish and enjoy are inextricably rooted in the principles espoused in the Bible, both Old and New Testament. Many Christians would be shocked to find out how incredibly similar our worldviews are. I used to listen to Arutzsheva radio online, and I can swear to you that if it had not been for the occasional Jewish/Hebrew vocabulary usage I would not be able to distinguish their views from those of Christians. The professor is talking a whole lot about how Jewish values foment discrimination and exclusivity, and yet when you look at Western nations who have based their system of laws and justice on Judeo-Christian values, those are the least characteristic of traits of such societies. As complete contrast, you need only look in Israel's immediate vicinity to understand why Israel is the only beacon of freedom in the Middle East and it is due to JEWISH values, not anything else! You want to try to be a Jew or professing Christian in any of Israel's neighboring nation states - you do so at your own risk. I wonder if "dhimmitude" was ever brought up in the discussion (I stopped listening half-way through). This is where all the liberals stick their collective heads in the sand! You want to express leftist liberal values in those societies - good luck! Are you gay, are you a woman, are you a Christian, are you a Jew - know your place! You think, even for a second, that you have equal rights there? Think again. Don't take my word for it - look it up! Search the globe and tell me where this isn't true. In Israel, non-Jewish citizens have equal rights under the law and enjoy far more freedom than they would in the neighboring states from which many of their ancestors originated. Considering the ongoing animosity by Arab "Palestinians", this is in no small measure nothing less than ASTOUNDING. So yeah, I love Israel. I think they're cool. I've been there 3 times. There are many other exemplary and admirable qualities about Israeli Jews, and none of them are accidental, but rather attributable to a culture steeped in a faith that is both ennobling and liberating, and not just for them, but the world at large. Sadly, the professor missed the boat! As for my part, even if I'd like to become a citizen of Israel (which I currently don't, but what's not to like!) but can't, it doesn't matter to me. One of the paramount reasons for the re-birthing of the state of Israel, was to ensure that something like the Holocaust could never occur again. Historically, no other people has been more irrationally hated than the Jews. They now have a land of their own the size of New Jersey and their only pre-requisite for becoming a citizen is that you be a Jew - born or converted. Others are still welcome - you just can't apply for citizenship. And still, over 1.5 million non-Jews are citizens! Do not tear down that which protects you and keeps you a light unto the nations! Your enemies alone are the ones who would love for you to do so!
MrVpassenheim :"Thou shalt not kill"! "Thou shalt not covet the neighbour's goods" "Thou shalt not steal" How does those three commandment reconcile with pillaging and plundering North,Central, and South America, decimating its indigenous peoples, and seizing their lands?
Silly and sophomoric. Judaism is not a belief. It is not a theology. It is a people, a tribe that has a relationship to each other, as well as a relationship to their G'd. It is a covenential relationship to G'd. I don't really care one bit about Sand's mumblings.

"an atheist israeli jew"???? WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? see, this is the problem really. I am an arab and i am atheist. I live in an arab muslim majority country. Of course people celebrate muslim holidays. I enjoy some as well. It is part of the culture. But I can never call myself muslim because I dont believe in islam. I am arab, lets say lebanese for instance and atheist. I can celebrate christian holidays and muslim holidays cos it is the culture of the place. But that doesnt make me muslim or christian. because i am atheist. There are reformist christians and reformist muslims. there are secular muslims and secular christian. But they are still muslim and christians. of course, if someone is atheist among them. he will call himself a secular atheist. no secular muslim or christian is atheist. secular just means that someone want the laws to be not religious and he can be religious or atheist in that matter. i am atheist, my parents are muslims and it means that I don't follow muslim tradition. so atheism is not part of jewish tradition or christian or islamic. Speaking arabic doesn't make me muslim or make me part of islam. teaching my children arabic language doesnt make them muslims or following islamic tradition. What do you mean by jew atheist? very contradictory! You are an israeli atheist. which means you don't believe in judaism, you don't believe in tanakh, torah, talmud, god etc...WHAT MAKES YOU JEWISH? if you don't believe in judaism? if you do, so why do you call yourself atheist? it is either atheist or a follower of a religion: jewish, muslim, buddhist...
Lev Zhivaev no, this is not real my dear friend. jewish, in history like any other religion, indicate people following judaism, the traditions and the books of prophets. they can be from any ethnic group. Jewish people of khaybar for instance lived in arabian island. they are jewish from etyopia, jewish from eastern europe, jewish of morocco and they are amazigh berbers. They are not people of ethnic group they are people following a religion. they can be black, blond, brown...so they aren't the same people, but they follow the same religion. the exact same thing for other religions, you find white muslims: checheniyans, black muslims: sudan, brown muslims: arabs...berber muslims, indian muslims, indian christians, arab christians, berber christians...etc... THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PEOPLE; IT IS NOT AN ETHNIC GROUP. by the way, I don't even know shlomo sand, this is the first time I heard him. jew reffers to religion to judaism. why this contradiction??? ok, lets say i want to convert to judaism for instance. what will you call me?
freedomtildeath Wrong, my friend. I believe your confusion is due to a language block. Both Jewish people and Jewish religion are described with the same word in English. Not necessarily so in other languages. In other cultures, with other languages, the simple fact of the existence of Jewish people was a well-known, undisputed axiom. However, to try and make things more simple in English, think of Jewry and Judaism. Yes, the Jewish faith has a strong historic connection to the Jewish people, but that doesn't make one the other. First there was a Jewish people, originating in Judea. They were the carriers of the Jewish faith. Later Jews' unique history scattered them all over the world. Still, their national identity was preserved, also through the Jewish faith, among other cultural-national traits. Today the Israeli Law of Return defines Jews as either: A. A descendant from Jews (peoplehood), or B. someone who converted to Judaism through the Orthodox process (religion). So, if you wish to convert to Judaism - you'd be a practising religious Jew. If after that you wish to join the Jewish nation - you'd be able to repatriate to Israel. Welcome, brother! ;)
Lev Zhivaev I am your sister ! you just answered yourself. The problem is the language. English. this ideology to name someone as a jew without judaism. It is so wrong. If you are an atheist you are not jewish or jew. there is no difference between a cannaite/babylionian/hebraic jew (the first people who embraced judaism) and ethiopian, arab or berber jewish for instance. No one is supperior to the other. It is the same as : there is no difference btw arab muslims (the first people who embraced islam) and indian, berber or persian muslims. Let's say even, if moises himself, had a child and his son rejected his message and didn't believe in god, he will not be jewish or jew anymore. Jewish reflects a religion and not an ethnicity. The first jews were not jewish by ethnic group and I think you know that very well. Abraham was either a canaanite or a babylonian. This is his ethnic group if he really existed. the people who believed in his sons prophecies were mesopotamians which means from canaan and babylon. So they became jewish which means they follow a religion. there is no jewish as ethnic group. so wheather you are from canaan or ethiopia or berber, you are jewish if you follow the t.r adition of the prophet and the message of judaism and believed in god etc... the first people who embraced judaism were not jews. They become jews since they follow a religion. This is so logical I don't even why we re having such a discussion my friend To be clear, if I chose to be jewish: it means I chose to embrace a religion. I will be jewish. And there is no difference between me and the first jewish who also embraced judaism. If a jew became an atheist, he will not be jewish at all. He doesnt believe in judaism or god. So he will be an atheist. No matter his ethnic group. Even if some one who lived in ancient israel and didn't believe in judaism and was atheist he will be a canaanite atheist for instance. If he convert to christianity he will be a canaanite christan. to say an athesit jew it doesn't make any sense! it is paradoxal! It is like saying a muslim atheist.
