What's shaking, people. I'm back with another Tears for Fears reaction, and I now finally have the overdue copy of Songs from the Big Chair, so let's start going through this, beginning with the full version of a song that will always be one of my favorite Tears for Fears songs (and '80s songs more generally), "Shout." And indeed, you'll see what a big difference the extended section of this song makes for me. So join me as we enjoy this utter classic! Cheers!

You probably already know, but the line in Everybody Wants To Rule The World, "So Sad They Had To Fade It" was in reference to the record company editing Shout for radio.

The duo were heavily into Arthur Janov's Primal Scream therapy at the time. They got the name Tears For Fears after they saw it in his book. I remember you saying you like the Saxophone, you're in for a real treat with the second track. Please listen to Broken and Head Over Heels in the same sitting.

Don't know if you're aware, but Shout and Everybody Wants To Rule The World were the last two tracks written for the album, Roland was reluctant to record both, he thought EWTRTW was too lightweight, and Shout was just a chorus, he saw the song as just repeating the chorus all the way through, he was finally convinced to write verses.

Been a long time since I listened to a whole song by them. Like elementary school long ago. I was into these guys and Duran Duran pretty heavy when I was real young.

That's funny, because I remembered both those bands from when I was a kid too (I was born in '80), but have only just "rediscovered" them after I started doing these videos. Didn't realize they both dipped into so many different styles, back in the day I just thought of them as "80s music."

Ugh I played this tape to DEATH my freshman yr in college back in 85/86...brings back memories..some grief as well I was in denial of my grandmothers death...and recall wishing I could " let it all out " but nope nada ...so id just play this song over n over instead ...sigh ..love love this album...I dont know if you know the Vaughn George channel but he interviewed Bascombe (producer) that was interesting... he went on to produce Music for the Masses with DM ..ty for the reaction...(sorry for my ramblings)

Your ramblings are always welcome on this channel, Nina. Thanks for sharing and sorry about your grandmother and the emotions you had to deal with. But yeah, I don't know the full album (yet!), but the two big hits (which I now understand were barely included on the album) just give me so much nostalgia and joy. Plus "Head over Heels" is great too, though I think I was a little young to fully appreciate the quality of that one. Anyway, more Depeche and Tears for Fears coming later tonight/tomorrow morning, Nina. Hope to see you there! :)

Matt, you really need to listen to this album in order, it is very similar to Seeds and Tipping Point in it is best listening to it in order.

Understood! I obviously messed that up a little doing the "Head Over Heels / Broken" medley, though that was because someone had requested "Head Over Heels" from this album after I did that vinyl reaction. Regardless, I will indeed do the album in order from here on out. And I'm looking forward to that saxophone! Cheers, appreciate you, Michael!

@@mattsnider2667 When you listen to Broken, you'll see why it sounds better listening to Broken/Head Over Heels/ Broken all in one sitting, I'll not spoil it for you. If you like electronic music get hold of Roland's solo album, Tomcats Screaming Outside, it's nothing like Tears For Fears. The album title came from Roland's ex-wife, on walking into the studio while the album was playing she remarked "what's that noise, it sounds like Tomcats Screaming Outside"
