David Death - Actually the line references the 1973 SciFi book by Michael G. Coney “Friends Come In Boxes”. The premise is that the problem of immortality had been solved in the 21st century; when you reached 40, your brain was removed and forcibly transferred into the head of a six-month-old infant, in that way you could get another forty years of life, then do it all over again, all you had to do was obey EVERY law no matter how trivial. The birth rate crashed the (who would want to have a baby that would soon become a total adult stranger?) meaning there was a growing waiting period between transfers and in the interim the disembodied brains were kept (conscious) in special boxes known as friendship boxes.

@@thelwulfeoforlic6482 He mentions the friend in the hallway which is a robot the same as the friends that come in boxes I think he was thinking about my love is a liquid when he wrote AFE but I can not be sure. I am a very confusing and complex person but that is just M. E.

I'm not sure he's sticking things where they don't belong. I always had this down as being about cloning / genetic engineering. Sperm samples in test tubes in clinical rooms.
