It all depends on the symptoms shown by the shocks. Even with a worn shock, the car would still be able to drive but the suspension performance and comfort will get affected. After several thousand miles of operation cycles, 1. Oil seals could break (You could lift the dust boot inside the coil over and see if the piston rod has oil presence. Ideally it should be clean) 2. You could check rubber isolators on the strut mount (under the hood and just below the base of the coil-over) to see if its torn. 3. A strut with worn interior would act stiff making the compression and rebound movement inconsistent. 4. You could also check for worn bushings on lower arm joints, sway bars/stabilizer bar which are crucial parts of the suspension system. You need something above 1.5L at the least. Look for PSA engines or Duratorque Tiger, Lynx series engines. Most of them are common rail inline 4 cylinder. Detailed listing could be found in Wiki.
