your thought is right, it is a hell march for those soldiers. One thought ahead, how about those making this wall..constructing the wall is thousand times harder than just walk over it.
It seems like you have left China. What a pity you didn't get travelling advice of avoiding the great wall in summer hot day. If the great wall is in bucketlist then congratulations for the great completion.
