Doesn’t Islam excuse people from fasting if it may be dangerous? Does the U.S. FAA allow pilots to fly fasting? Freedom of religion cannot override safety.
@get2dachoppa249

I’ve worked aviation in the Middle East for close to 15 years, so I can tell you with 100% certainty that the laws of Islam absolutely allows you break your fast while traveling, and that certainly applies to flight & cabin crews. The Quran spells out that you can make up the fasting days at a later date, and the majority of Muslim flight crews do not fast on days with long flights. It’s Ramadan right now, and I see this scenario at work daily.
@Shaker626
@Shaker626 6 месяцев назад
The more pressing issue is that the pilots likely falsified all or most of their flight hours on the types that they were flying. It's a Pakistani cultural problem that needs to be addressed. Most Arab carriers have the same fasting pilots but don't have this problem because they don't fake their flight hours.

It’s about the act of traveling, not any specific mode of travel, in relation to the physical demands of traveling in the ancient world, ie. walking, riding an animal, a sail or oar powered boat. Once you surpassed a certain distance (translations vary, but around 50-ish miles), you are exempt from fasting in order to keep your strength up for the duration of the journey.
@TheOz91
@TheOz91 6 месяцев назад
If only if it is dangerous. Short haul pilots over in the region where I'm in, Maritime Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, etc), Muslim pilots will fast. Even flights that are around 6 or 7 hours, they would fast. The issue becomes if they don't have the strength to do it. For most healthy and fit people, this is not an issue because they can still operate things just fine, especially if they shift their diet slightly. The biggest thing is managing fluids since they can't consume anything until sunset, but again, not a big deal. If one is actually competent at their jobs, then a slight loss of strength and focus due to hunger won't be such an issue.

May be or may be not one of the contributing factors was Fasting, in general pilots shouldn’t fast and fly commercial flights, there are many fatwas (Islamic exemptions/explanations ) about not fasting while travelling or performing hard jobs that require great deal of mental and/or psychomotor skills, flying is one of them, the PCAA was quite correct to involve a definite ruling about this issue.

As a Pakistani' I want to admit this, PIA became the worst airline I've traveled so far because of corruption.There was a case in supreme court in2020, 110 pilots were caught having fake degrees.😢 This was world class airline in 60's, it was PIA wo help Emirates to take first step, PIA gave airplanes to Emirates, trained their pilots,. But unfortunately we're living in under martial law (declared/non declared), and corruption at it's peak.

As an instructor overseeing operations across four distinct fleets, it is a common observation that individuals with extensive experience sometimes display overconfidence, leading to complacency and an assumption of omniscience. Consequently, this demeanor can create a barrier for less experienced first officers, inhibiting their willingness to offer input or advice to the captain, thus hindering effective collaboration within the cockpit.

Has Fasting been determined as a contributing factor in crashing? Do fasting pilots crash their planes? I think it was a daredevil attitude and blatant disregard of SOP's by the pilots and control tower caused this crash. This flight should have been declined landing and ordered to circle for a new approach the very first time for its height and speed. Pilot was allowed his discretion in spite of speed and steep approach. This pilot was not one of those with compromised flight certificates. He was an experienced pilot with international experience. Just a daredevil attitude.

As an IT Engineer, our country has had a lot of Pakistani immigrants come to our country who all seem to be IT Engineers! Anyway a new team of IT Engineers were made for a very popular world known IT business, that I also began with at the time. Whilst helping clients in remote Desktop stuff (all the usual IT common knowledge). One of the Pakistani IT guys with a claimed Masters in IT (definitely above my qualifications) asked me: _How do I open Control Panel_ ? 'Control Panel' would have to be the most basic of basic things to know! Its like a plumber asking: How do I connect pipes together? Or: Where do I find pipes in a house? I quickly informed him (as he was still doing Remote Desktop to his client. And then asked: What exactly are you going to do in Control Panel anyway? He said he was going to check the User's password. I said: You don't do that in Control Panel, we do that in Active Directory! (these thigs are like the most basic No1. thing any IT tech learns). Over the next few days I listened on to his 'assistance' with clients. He would actually say: Give me password now! Whilst its true IT Engineers may require User passwords (if we don't reset them). We NEVER say: _Give me password now_ Since, that's not how assisting people speak. My Manager was also Pakistani, and I think they made a mistake hiring me who actually knew IT stuff. As it was beyond obvious these new team members had never done an IT course in their life. Suffice to say we lost the contract! Only myself and my team lead stayed for another 2 weeks, then we had to leave too. Since 'the team' completely messed up the entire contract! Pakistani 'IT Engineers' continue to be the main IT people in my city. Their manner (on phone < always) still seems to be the same. Little knowledge, extremely rude, and racist against me the country of origin.

@@Clipper1094 the only time i can think of where passengers started cooking fires on board a plane was during the Vietnam war when the cia run 'Air America' was flying weapons, medical supplies etc, rescuing downed pilots & moving various tribal armies around Laos & Thailand. Once, when one plane (I think a C-123) was helping evacuate tribesmen & their livestock and they started a cooking fire in the back cargo area (but it was a cargo plane, during war, with tribesmen from the deep jungle, some who had never seen a plane before. This made me more angry than any other accident report I ever read. That captain effectively killed those passengers and himself. I don't usually go in this hard on pilots, who are human beings after all, but the unforgivable behaviour of both captain and copilot for their actions and inaction respectively, boiled my blood. I take my job very seriously but when institutional corruption allows unsuitable people to hold licenses and ratings because of graft and greed, no amount of training will keep passengers and public safe from this kind of incompetence and stupidity.

To say that this crew buggered things up is pointless. Blaming them for getting so many things wrong will not prevent re-occurrence. In conclusion: the crew were not flying the plane. 'If the holder of the licence is aware or has reasonable grounds to believe...'. The airline is setting themselves up for disaster here. Apart from people not being inclined to admit reduced capacity for any reason, low blood sugar levels can basically render a person legally incompetent. It can cause lower iQ-scores, irritability to the point of violence, severe depression, and complete apathy. It's different for every person, but between these symptoms and nobody being completely unaffected by fasting, flying a plane should be exempt. Airline pilots cope with enough stress, irregular schedules and long hours even without fasting. There are exemptions to religious fasting and pilots should be included. Or fast but not fly. I loved this long format video as it provides an opportunity to go into much more detail, which you provided excellently. I hope you have the time in your otherwise busy life to do more of these long format videos.

Pan-dem-ic. Ya, any beliefs that force one to fast should be kept from heavy machinery and of course, flying. Fatigue is extremely dangerous. Seems they still haven't followed the global CRM requirements so should therefore be restricted from leaving local airspace (not sure if they currently do or not) until it's been proven otherwise... There's no room for seniority arrogance on the flight deck, which is still very prevalent in some regions and it's obvious this FO didn't want to speak up/take over due to this.
