Totally agree, there’s houses near me who just after ww2 we’re built as a temporary measure, they’re still there. I worked in a school built in the early 1900s, as a child I went to schools built in the 50s when my home was built, there was always leaks if it rained. Where I worked leaks were very rare. The walls were mostly a foot, 12 inch, 30 cm thick. The drill bits often snapped so any repairs could take a few weeks as the drill bits were difficult to get hold of . The hours were definitely built to a higher standard than the schools

Likewise I have 1961 council house I bought of the guy who bought via buy to let, so well made.

Only issue with a ex-council house is usually they’re built on a council estate, in a crap area with a mix of chavvie neighbours. I’ll give it a miss to be fair.

I’ve just done up a three bedroom mid terraced - well my builder did - he’s the best - the house is a hundred years old and it’s solid - it may not have the mod cons of a new build but I’ll take that anytime

Hi I’m a bricklayer and your spot on in what you say. Today it seems to me that there are 3 main problems in construction today in uk. 1 The price mercenaries (subcontractors) getting is crazy. In Lincoln it’s over a £ a brick. So they are going to slam them in. 2 time constraints on getting house done 3 new gen of trades men out there are well under qualified in their trade. NVQ what a joke. A 2 year college course isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. I know I got it. I passed 2004 and it was a better course then. But now kids are passing level 2 courses on work that we did halfway in level 1 it’s crazy. My apprentice has passed his course work in brickwork but never done a fire place a chimney and won’t get qualified until he passes year2 higher learning math. Should go back to city and guilds. Most lads out there now have little to no trowel time it’s rong. As long as you can half lay to a line you pass it crazy.

I'm a decorator and I stopped working for one builder because he was getting me to paint very carefully over all the shit work he was doing in an effort to make it disappear. The HSE caught up with him eventually and fined him (not very much).

These building firms contract firms who employ no direct labour … all the workers are forced into false self employment or hired from employment agencies … both options offer zero Hour Contracts with no holiday or sick pay … Building houses is about Box Ticking and enormous Proffits… Blame the Government for condoning immoral employment practices…

Most of those issues are not so bad - as a "damn, we really used a bad one here". But in this amount? And like "all doors" - yes, shame them. This is ridiculous. Is that now the quality people try to get away with?

@@MGDM4 I promise you there will be stuff you haven’t noticed, I fit garage doors and half the doors I install the bottom of the frame is tight to the brickwork whilst the top is set back upto 2 inches. My frame has to be plum, even if it shows how poor the brickwork is. It’s three of the biggest house builders in the uk that I work on site for so I don’t believe that these things don’t happen on your sites, only that you haven’t noticed it 🤷‍♂️

@Retrobunnies Bit harsh bud, doesn't matter what price it was really. 9 times out of 10 a house regardless of size is going to be the most expensive purchase/debt anyone owns. New builds get a bad rep and there clearly are some shocking builders out there who put profits over quality. But there are also plenty of sh*try old house out there also with no DPCs, riddled with asbestos, radon issues ect ect not to mention the energy efficiency rating (best of luck with the energy price increases). I have owned new and old and would say both can be good or bad and mostly down to preference when the houses are good quality.

It has nothing to do with weight. It is due to the fact you will compress the insulation and reduce its thermal rating properties.

@@roscopeco2000 Out of plumb walls are rarely fixed. If the homeowner can get the builder to admit fault, they might offer a settlement but honestly it’s going to be like that till they demolish the house and the builder will have moved on to the next bodge job. Most of these inspections lead to money at best and the homeowner living with it or paying someone else to rectify. If the estate is still under construction they might attempt a repair. It’s normally the last few houses that are the worst, with the construction company long gone.

@@newhomequalitycontrol never once in 20 plus years have I seen a gable get taken down on a house that's been handed over. Perhaps if it's been caught buy the supervisor when it's actually in build but never once roof is on and signed over. The nhbc should get all get all videos you make so they can learn what needs to be checked, I've said it before and I'll say it again one check at joist lift by the nhbc isn't enough plus they don't check for level or plumb. The only thing nhbc want to see is clean trays and clean ties that's alls that has been checked for at least 7 years now. The industry needs a dramatic change but I think if you had a clerk of works on site again like the old days this would be nipped in the bud.

Sadly that kind of work ethic has long disappeared. Now it's just grab money and move on to next job.

Its a bit very naive to think the site manager ‘signs these off’ They are inspected by an insurance company. Theirs a real problem in this country with shortage of skilled labour. Also the margins building new houses especially now with supply issues, massive material price increases and as of this year a change in requirements to build more ecological houses (regarding toning out of gas boilers and rightly so). Theirs plenty of stuff out bashing new builds, less on the ones that are done well.. A well built new house will always be better then something built before building regs were more stringent. Unless it’s an over specked self build.

A site manager will sign off the work before any insurance company comes around... You are right about the skilled labour demand. They employ chimps ( anyone ) hence the shocking work.. Can't even rectify snagging issues on the 3rd attempt type. Heat pumps will not be feasible in this country you watch what is going to happen. Yes a well built new house will be better than one from a different era, but you will be paying through the nose for it.

@UnjustifiedRecs yep heavy machinery tracking back and forth compacting "soil" the gardens get a dusting of topsoil before turfing (if you're lucky). Wouldn't go near a new build unless I was checking my plot daily. Even then I'd be worried the shite thrown up next door would still cause issues for mine. Stay away.

Yep, just dug out a patio for my new build and found a pallet, bricks, cement bags and drinks bottles, shocking

I know a local developer scraped off all the topsoil pushed it into a massive pile and sold it off to the highest bidder what the purchasers ended up with was a plot of bedrock clay that grew nothing and never drained

They built a new estate to us, and we had a look around before they sold them - one bungalow had the front garden full of rubbish and used saws - all covered with a thin veneer of topsoil and turf. The people who bought the house wondered why the grass never grew.

I am a foreigner in England for 20 years. don't just blame the cheap labor, blame your bribe inspectors and the carelessness of your own managers. the workforce does what managers say

i can testify that, our landlord hired foreign labour at our tenancy because they were cheap now everything's squint, the paintwork on the doors looks like it was painted with milk and cracks have formed around the windows....

I see this argument a lot, but my question is why is it never raised that the builders ultimately have responsibility over their own work? We already know that construction work is vastly overpaid for its market value, so builders think they can just slack off and cut corners because some bean counter in Head Office says so? I mean, how much more incentive to builders need to do a proper job? Infinity pounds per job? A medal? A parade? This attitude is completely endemic to the building trade and perpetuated by those in it. A surgeon doesn't just cut your appendix off and then leave it in your torso because they think they're not being paid enough. A fireman doesn't arrive at a fire and put half of it out because they think they're not being paid enough. A teacher doesn't get to 1pm and stop teaching because they think they're not getting paid enough. A waiter doesn't bring you your starter and then just doesn't bring you your main or dessert because they think they're not being paid enough. Never mind the fact that you go to any building site anywhere, ever, and you'll find the majority of builders at any one time simply not working. Either waiting for the outcome of fixing their own dumb mistakes, or heading for their fourth meal of the day and it's not even 3 o'clock, or increasingly only working school hours between 9am and 3/4pm, or on their phones in the van cab, or standing around smoking and vaping next to open sewers, electrical conduits, gas lines, etc. Anybody else in any other industry would be fired quicker than you can say lickety-split for what builders in this country get away with, and get far less pay and social plaudits for much worse working conditions and protections. I ask again, what incentive to builders actually need to complete the job they're being paid a far above average salary to an acceptable standard? Because we can't keep paying Derek £50K/year to rock up at 11am, sit in the van picking his arse for an hour, waltz into a building site, make a hash job of fixing two pipes together, and then say he's done for the day and bugger off down the pub.

I'm sure if someone was videoing 26 years ago there would have been far more scare story's don't forget the people making theses films are making a living from it so are trying to scare people into paying for there services

My house was built in the 1960s and the craftsmanship is also crap, unfortunately. I installed me own kitchen a few years ago and found that none of the walls were at right angles - fitting an L-shaped of units I had to pack the wall out by about 5 inches by the time I got to one end! But yes generally things seem to be getting worse.

Thank you! Well it's all put into a report with photos and descriptions, usually about 120-180 issues on average and the client gives that to the developer to rectify the work

@@mikeplant9163 I live in a small se england town where two substantial blocks were built 20 or so years ago in a prominent sea front location, the developer ruined the surrounding roads that had to be re tarmac'd at council expense they poured large amounts of cement into the local drains which set solid and had to be replaced by Southern Water, these two blocks have never been signed off and the flats never sold because the blocks are moving and badly sinking, what was meant to be a high end development has ended up as glorified temporary accommodation

@@theangrygamer895 everyone who works in the house is a proper tradesman. I'd say 90% of the guys on site are fully capable of doing a high quality job, the problem is it just isn't possible when the time scales are as tight as they are and site are just chucking trades in on top of one another

I’ve had plenty of Irish builders who not only bodged everything they did but were aggressive if you had the audacity to say anything about the fact the work wasn’t what was agreed at the outset. I would never have another Irish builder.

The trouble is once they sold all these homes the company ceases to exist under their current names and start again under a different name, so there is nobody to take responsibility for this garbage work.

It’s not the responsibility of building control for quality issues mate, building regs are the absolute minimum you can get away with ie the lowest of the low, the only way that house builders will learn is if the trades are competent, correct wages are paid and the people doing the work take some pride in their work but everyone needs to put food on the table. A clerk of works is the way but not many housebashers would want to be on a site that they can’t get away with sub standard work so they move on to the next one to have a go, a snagging inspector gets paid for finding the faults after the event; qualifications required - none really; anyone can do it so that isn’t the answer. If everything was perfect then a snagging inspector would be out of a job so go figure. At the end of the day EVERYONE is doing it for the money and nothing else.

This is 100% a government issue and always has been - companies will always be as close to breaking the law as they can get away with and it's up to the government to make sure they can't scam people... But they haven't done their job for the last 40 years or so.

@@JD-env1 Hi RT, I think all the major companies are pretty much the same, it depends on the site managers and the tradespeople they use, if you have large housing site with minimal management staff and only 1 site manager then they simply won’t have the time to see everything and people can and will take advantage, the problem is that despite the general negativity towards new builds people still buy them, I’d say do your own research, get a snagging company such as New Home Quality Control involved as soon as possible and if something doesn’t seem right then be prepared to walk away, a house is normally the biggest investment we will make so don’t be taken in by the show house and think hard before you part with your hard earned cash.

Just imagine, if that car wasn't illegally parked on the pavement, that man would have been using it. If he had, there's no question, he would be dead. If I drive my car with unsafe tyres, I face prosecution. The bigger question is, did the developers face prosecution?

When I say dont blame the contractors what I mean is the sub contractors, although there really is no excuse for leaving work like this but moral within the trades are at an all time low that trades simply dont care any more.

@@formhubfar I think you’ve hit the nail on the head mate, as soon as a clerk of works or anyone with a conscience flags up the sub standard work then the contractor walks to the next site they think they can get away with it, the buck stops with the person carrying out the shoddy work, if a contractor is any good then they won’t work for peanuts and put their name to the abysmal work.

I've known about the quality of these new estates for 15 years.

There's a snobbery attached with having a "brand new" house. I saw through it years ago, my wife always talked about it but I've worked in enough of them to know what half arsed crap they are. In addition to being soulless boxes. Would not in a million years buy off plan. Much much rather buy something old and run down and spend a few years renovating it, then move on to the next one.

it's not the abolition of apprenticeships that's the problem. Clever kids don't come into construction trades anymore because it is hard work and you need to graft for your money.....this has effectively weakened the construction genepool so this is what you are left with.

Yes there persimmons site not to far from me heard all the stories of other dog walkers over the past three who own those new builds not good. They put huge sign up recently on the main road to the site that said five star home builders. With big gold stars. Oh how i laughed. 🇬🇧

@@Daisy-tl2lh we haven't got a housing crisis we have a govt that imported so many people it could fill a city the size of Liverpool, in the space of one year. It may look like a housing crisis as many other crisises look like something they are not. Evironmental green space crisis will be next due to mass building of shitty houses on green space of course the root cause will remain the same to many people not enough landmass.

Needs to name and shame so that they will improve on the quality!
