I've admired Devin and his work for many years - I have no problem with him delivering something radio-friendly with this single. His concerts, his tours and his ideas are usually very, very expensive. He should (and he must) earn the money he has always deserved.

Devin's been releasing radio friendly stuff for decades... The first Devin Townsend album ("Infinity") from 1998 is as full of tracks like this as it is with weird, experimental stuff like "Bad Devil" or "Noisy Pink Bubbles." "Addicted" is basically a radio hard rock album which he released in 2009 and is one of my favorites. "Ghost" from 2011 is an entire album of extremely mellow, soft rock. Ocean Machine has certain tracks on there which are as accessible as it gets (IE: "Regulator") for a hard rock band, and that was released back in 1997. If anything, he was getting far more success with his heavy metal band, Strapping Young Lad at the time he released "Infinity" and "Ocean Machine"... If he was doing it for financial reasons, those projects wouldn't have made sense, and breaking up SYL right as their popularity peaked back then would make even less sense. He did reform SYL a couple years after he broke it up initially... But he claimed that all the craziness in the wake of 9/11 and the start of the war on terror was his justification for reforming the band. I recall as I was lucky enough to see them live both before and after that hiatus... and they became a LOT more popular in the years after that hiatus until he disbanded them again to focus on The Devin Townsend Project for similar reasons as to why he broke up SYL in the first place. None of that sounds like a musician who has any need to make choices based on finances, it sounds like he is only at the mercy of his inspiration. He makes a good living as an independent artist; he has no record company debts to worry about or the cost of the overhead for belonging to such a large organization. He has more money than he really knows what to do with at this point, even when he spends a lot on production of his albums and his live show. Back in the late 90ies he was a lot closer to a starving artist, there were jokes about in the linear notes of the first two SYL albums, but nowadays he's pretty much the model for a successful independent artist. He really doesn't need to adjust his aesthetics to anyone.

I’ve never seen train videos before this, and I agree, it’s very soothing. My feeling is that the reason why is you feel are moving steadily forward into the future on an unchangeable path so there is structure that takes away uncertainty in direction, a bit like destiny, I suppose. In planes or cars, there is always the option to veer off, stop, go, turn or change your direction. With a train, there are no options. You are on these rails until you arrive at your destination. I dunno, that is just what came to me when you asked what was so appealing about that. I hope you like the interpretation and thanks for another wonderful Devy video. More, please!

Dev is the master at finding a place for every single element in the acoustic space of the mix, I'm so gutted I never got to run sound for him back when I was touring, came close and then I had to jump off a bloody stage to get some speaker cables... But yes, he can fill the acoustic space that we're listening to, and yet it sounds so very airy and free. And years down the line I find new bits of songs I've listened to thousands of times, and I get so excited - Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree fame (thoroughly recommend you check out his solo work, Hand. Cannot. Erase. is one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to, his voice and that of Ninet Trayb on "Routine" made me cry when I saw it at the Royal Albert Hall on the album tour. The entire sold out show was bawling their eyes out by the end. Lots of folk going "I'm not crying you're crying" and my brother and I openly weeping)

Two clean (male / female) and a harsh vocalist (sadly he recently left the band). You'd be (I think) blown away by the harsh vocals in their song BOOM!1 (intentional spelling). It features mostly the two male singers with a vocal surprise from the female. Or maybe the song PvP where all three are featured. That's actually the theme song for Swedish e-sports team. It's actually not that much different? Haha. Check out Ghost or Casualties of Cool. This feels like a nice split between the two.

I'd like to recommend listening to Blue October. They have such a unique sound, and huge transition in sound and message from their earlier work to current releases.

I think you would enjoy Hammerfall. My friend and I found them at Tower Records back in 1999/2000 based on the epic cover art. I used to describe them as "choirboy rejects" because they were just too metal for church. They have this driving, viking-like music but the vocals are insanely, well, choir-like. Their power balads are beautiful such as "Dreams come true" (my wife and I will play this at our renewal of vows if we ever have one) and "always will be" while their driving songs like "legacy of steel" and "renegade" are beautiful and heavy enough to mosh to. I believe any song you go for is an amazing experience and you'd really enjoy them.

I just found this great live stripped down version of David Bowie singing "Life On Mars." It's just him with a piano. The channel it's on is "Anna Apreleva."

Devin Townsend has been experimenting with that ambient sound when he established the Devin Townsend Project, especially on the albums "Ki" and "Ghost." Even though "Addicted!" is one of the more heavier albums, the song "Numbered!" attempts to grasp that ambient, billowy sound.

Just love that guy! I wonder if the train-track screenshot is from You Tube, there is a channel that records and plays back some of the train runs in Norway, it's pretty cool. I know he mentioned watching them and being fascinated.

Never thought I would see a railway cabride on a music video :) Nice to see! I work as a train driver and did some myself (not this account, no self promotion here, don't worry). Looks this is from Norway or Sweden. Nice reaction to some nice music!

Do you know the Russian vocalist Daria Stavrovich? There are two recordings of the show "The Voice". One is a cover of the song "Zombie" by The Cranberries. The other is the song "Circles on the Water". She has a very powerful voice.

What a relaxing song and video. It was great! I would love to see you react to LOVEBITES / Holy War [Live at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo 2020]. They are an all-female metal band from Japan and they are so good. Just discovered them myself a few weeks ago and I'm hooked.

Honestly, he has had many mor atmospheric releases that are solid. But the reaction I’d love to see is covering him with Anneke Van Geirsbergen (spelling is likely way off). But The Gathering is a band worth visiting as is.. but him with her (Ih-Ah the best example) is just a masterpiece of vocals.

I know that this definitely isn’t the same type of music genre, but if you want to hear one of the most amazing voices out there, listen to Hypnosis by Sleep Token. They’re a British metal band and the lead singer has one of the most beautiful and unique voices that I’ve heard in a very long time.

Hey, Elizabeth. I'd highly recommend doing a rection to either "In the Night" or "Eternally Apart" both by the band Phinehas. I feel like you'd appreciate the clean singing in otherwise heavy songs. Plus the harsh vocals are very well done. (At least to my untrained ears)
