SHOCKING PLACE IN RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA 

Ok, for those viewers wondering where this is, it's off the bike trail next to Van Buren Avenue bridge, behind the water treatment facility. I have lived in the Riverside area for 40 years and 20 years ago this stretch of river bottom was clean and there weren't any homeless or garbage strewn everywhere. It was a place people enjoyed on horseback, hiking or bike riding. A couple of years ago I decided to take my kayak down this stretch of river and had to ask for help to pull my kayak out right in this area. The man had a campsite to the left of the bike path at the start of this video. His camp was neat and he was happy to help me. It was cold out and he got soaked to the bone. I went home and brought back warm dry clothes, blankets, camping gear and hot food. He was so nice to help me, and was living there because he fell on hard times.

Born and raised in California. Used to go to Riverside Race Way for many years. Moved out 11 years ago and never looked back. The late great state of California has become a Sh*t Hole.

Im homeless and always pack up my camp. I never take up permanent residence and leave a small footprint. Its areas like this that creates bad image for the homeless. There are different levels of homelessness. This is by far the worst and its almost always tweakers.

Just because u are homeless does not mean u can destroy property has nothing to do with your situation

Their are thousands of people sitting in jails with nothing to do , clean that up .

Still no excuse for not cleaning up your mess I'm not hating on these people but why would you live In filth ?

OK I get that they are homeless, but the trash is unacceptable. Let them stay there if they at least clean it up.

Why don't they make a big ass homeless camp, about 100 acres, put a gravel road through it with some big ass sheds that have toilets and showers, if you are homeless, you must live there.

There was a long stretch along the river in Colorado Springs that was trashed like this and the homeless got together and cleaned it up.

I saw an interview with a homeless man on skid row and he said many of the homeless residents there make at least $100 a day. That is more than most people who aren't homeless... Unfortunately, they spend it on their next fix and according to some, "they want to be free of responsibilities." This is not all of them, but too many are homeless because of their addictions. Addictions that started out with just simply hanging out with the wrong group of kids.

I lived down there for three months because I was physically and mentally disabled and unable to find a job I could do continuously or any affordable housing. There are indeed a lot of tweakers in the river bottom but let me tell you: this is not the result of true liberal economic policies. It's the result of the Bush economy and a lack of a stronger social safety net. For every three tweakers down there there's at least one or two "normal" people who are in just as bad of a situation. I've known four people personally who have died because of homelessness after they moved to Riverside. Amber, Brian, Janice, and Gigi. Amber got hit by a train, Brian (mentally disabled senior) had a stroke and then a few days later was fed some tainted meth, Janice got run over in a parking lot, and Gigi was stabbed and bludgeoned with a rock for her social security check. None of them were people who could take care of themselves and none of them deserved what happened to them.

Nice young men just trying to find a place to relax and fish. What a mess.

Southern California and Las Vegas Have the biggest number of Domicile displaced in the country and you can figure at least a 1/4 of them are children.I am from the I.E. and now live in Vegas and shocked at there treatment and the way they are forced to live, the city, county ,state could careless.Giving them money dont not always help because alot are not allowed in stores ,fastfood joints or even some parking lots/shopping centers.And the weather dose not help either.When it rains and you live in a area that floods what they do have washes away or they do sometimes the heat waves theres no A/C on the streets.Yes some do have mental problems but there also no help given to them.I know im rambling but I was homeless and forced to live in my truck for a year and a half.My advice is if you see someone asking for money buy them some food and a couple bottles of water.

For those who do not realize.Homeless people do not have trash pick up or even restrooms open to them.The majority of establishments would rather deter traffic from those who do not typically have money and lock their restrooms and post "For Customers Only". Furthermore that area did not look that way when it was occupied I am sure,it looks that way after they do a sweep ,which most places do after a period of time or when police have been called too many times .The river is a very volatile area to be camped too,when it rains that river will almost certainly get out of its banks and take your camp and spread it all over the place.That garbage is most likely the result of years of inhabitation and cycles of police sweeps and flash flooding where former residents pick up and leave with what little comforts they can manage to carry and in a short time new residents will move in and setup behind them. That is why you will see a guys tent setup next to a trash heap,it is not his but the former residents trash who because they have no means could not take it with them. it is easy for one to judge in ignorance,but those circumstances they live in are very volatile and very unpredictable which a part of transient living,like or not.

it’s gotten better since this video was uploaded i live a couple mins away from there and sometimes ride my dirtbike over there and there’s a couple homeless there still but it’s much cleaner and overall better then when this video was uploaded

I always drive by here and wondered what and who exactly was on here. Interesting video and I found something out about my city.

I used to live in Jurupa near the Santa Ana "river". The river bottom was home for feral pigs, huge population of crows, and homeless squatters. The bamboo grew so thick it provided solitude and cover for anything or anyone wanting to lay low. Crack ho's, gangs, meth houses, homeless,....aww good times in the 909. Of course there were some bad areas as well. But lets focus on the positive!

It's so unfair just because they don't work doesn't mean they should be forced to live that way, we need to help them.

Im pretty familiar with that area. In the summer, the whole place catches fire at leastt 4 times a year. And when it rains in so cal longer than 2 days, everything you see here now, is replaced by stuff from homeless camps a few miles upstream in San Berdu. No fooling. When we get a storm come through, the river increases 10 fold. The sherrifs helicopter has to fly over and warn them to move.

That river has been isht for decades.

This is absolutely shocking ! I’ve been away from California for years born and raised in Southern California ( since 2003 ) and have only visited a few times , but have spent 9 months out here and I’m shocked at all the homeless and huge amounts of trash out in the streets in Downtown Los Angeles- Long Beach- Hollywood and Burbank areas . I hear it’s just as bad as Northern California. It’s so depressing to see my beautiful home state turning to shit . I still love the people but hate the policies and government that allowed this to happen . I think it’s a combination that has allowed this to get to epidemic proportions. I’m not sure what the answers are but all I know it looks like 3rd world in some areas .

These aren't "homeless" folks. These are capable people who have given up on themselves. The answer isn't by giving them handouts, you have to convince them they have a purpose.

I lived in Riverside from 8to19 when I went into the Marine Corps. It was a great place to grow up. Evidently not so today, what a crying shame, I loved this city. After Vietnam I came back on occasion to see my parents and visit old friends.
