Counting down to WrestleMania 35, Solomonster ranks the Top 10 Most Shocking Match Outcomes in WrestleMania History. #2 is the night that Stone Cold shocked the world by shaking hands with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 17, a decision that Austin himself regrets even after all these years. It was the night that the Attitude Era came to a close.

Still love everything about this match. Sad it all fell apart later on mostly because of the Alliance storyline getting in the way.

I hated the Stone Cold heel turn, because of what it represented. 1.) Low Ratings 2.) The death of WCW 3.) The Invasion angle (that was an abomination) 4.) Like Solomonster said, THE DAMN "WHAT" CHANTS!

I think that's what they intended to do after Wrestlemania 17 but HHH didn't want to become babyface. Also, I do think they wanted to turn HHH babyface after Judgement Day 2001, and they were gonna do the 2 Man Power Trip breakup when they lost the tag titles to Chris Benoit and Y2J, but that didn't happen because of HHH's quad injury.

There will never be another Mania like X-Seven. This was when WWE/F truly peaked. The only thing recently that has come close to X-Seven was TakeOver: New Orleans last year. Once Stone Cold turned heel and WCW died, wrestling lost its luster. It's not as mainstream as it use to be. Sure WWE have all these sponsors and have all these news outlets talking about them. They have their own streaming service. But they keep losing more and more fans every single year. Wrestling will never be as big as it once was during the Attitude Era. It just won't. The death of WCW really was the worst thing to ever happen to the wrestling business. I'm hopeful for AEW. I hope they become a successful alternative. But they will never reach the height WCW did in terms of competition for WWE.

Stone Cold turning heel and beating The Rock for the title with Vince Mcmahon's help was shocking and the sight of the hated rivals shaking hands made it even more jaw dropping, i wasn't really a fan of it but i respect Austin for wanting to go in a different direction with his character and he did some cool stuff during the first half of that run. I always thought Triple H’s feud with Austin easily could have continued. They had such a good feud before Austin won the Rumble. Don't blame the "What?" chant on heel Austin... That idea is shared between Austin and Christian over an odd phone call they had with each over and it caught on fire with the fans even to this very day! People who hate the "What?" chant are ones who don't know the history of it or ones who didn't make money off of it. And that chant was going to happen no matter if Austin was face or heel at the time since it was very popular while Austin was both face and heel.

Some called this an unexpected turn that left them shocked. However, I could sense Austin heading for a heel turn after the Three Stages of Hell match with Triple H. Where a bloodied and battered Steve walks up the ramp, stops, turns and just has this look of slight regret on his face after failing to win the final stage. Telegraphing the change of heart he'd undergo before "Shaking hands with the devil himself" and hinted at further with his sudden drive to win the WWE Championship at any cost.

@harshavardhan-iy2rc 5 лет назад
I know Takers streak ending would be 1.....but in my opinion Austin turning heel was a bigger shock...... Let me put my perspective and I know it's subjective but here's why Brock comes back.....gets massive ovation......they keep calling him "THE BEAST INCARNATE"....looses to Cena(I know he handed Cena his ass) but still 0-1 Then he wrestles triple h at summerslam and has a dud 1-1 Then the almighty king of kings conquers "THE BEAST INCARNATE " .....1-2.....Brock then beats almighty HHH with an assist from Paul heyman......now the supposed "BEAST INCARNATE" is struggling to beat an old HHH....2-2 Had probably the best match of the year against Punk.....that match helped Punk look like a badass while "BEAST INCARNATE' barely beats punk with heyman's involvement 3-2..... Going into wrestlemania I thought Brock needed something to legitimise his "BEAST INCARNATE" persona....and thought he needed to win a big match convincingly...and logically it helped that he beat The undertaker....had he lost......wtf is so impressive about supposed "BEAST INCARNATE" when he's losing against a beat up guy, struggling to win against a veteran and needing assist to beat a beat up guy..... Plus people forget by that point Brock at that point because of aforementioned reasoned had lost some of his mistique and appeal.......all in all if you put 2 and 2 together it's not as shocking as Austin turning heel......I think people were way too invested(rightly so) in Daniel Bryan story........literally no one I know even had fathomed Austin joining hands with Vince in 2001.... Sorry for the long post.....I know I'm still probably in the minority but I thought I'd give an insight to what I was thinking even in 2014....... Great show solomonster....lots of love and more so respect for putting amazing shows week after week for such a long time 😁😁

I honestly didn't have a problem with the heel turn. I think it added tremendous shock value. I feel as if the timing would've been better had the Rock not left shortly after to film the movie. Obviously you couldn't keep Austin heel forever, but it was definitely worth a shot. I think the timing was what mainly contributed to the move not really coming to fruition.

@addi543

The problem with Austin turning heel wasn’t that it was bad timing or the Anti-Mega Powers partnership with Hunter. The problem was that instead of trying to elevate new talent like Benoit, Jericho, Edge and Christian or The Hardy’s (anyone remember the vicious beat down they received from the Two-Man Power Trip), they have him feud with Undertaker at one of, if not the worst in-ring year in his career. In both PPV matches they had, you could tell Austin was struggling to be a heel. Austin didn’t start getting over as a heel until he was facing Benoit, Jericho and Angle.
@PlusUltraAdrian
@PlusUltraAdrian 5 лет назад
I agree that this was a bad call. Austin should have won clean and he and Rock should have showed respect and sportsmanship towards each other. And then have Booker T, DDP, and a couple of other WCW guys attack them both. The beat up the Rock so bad that he has to be out of action for a few months (so that he can film his movie). And then have Triple H, Undertaker, and Kane come down to even the odds. Only for more WCW guys to show up and beat them down as well. Then have Shane enter the ring and pose with his WCW guys.

@victorcastillo2416
@victorcastillo2416 2 года назад
If WWF wanted to make a credible heel in HHH, then he'd eventually have to get a big win against Austin at some point in order to solidify his spot as a top heel that could believably contend with the likes of Austin, Rock, Taker, etc. If a heel talks smack and loses when it matters most, then it doesn't make sense to have that heel in the title picture and in main events. Gotta make him a credible, believable heel first. If he says, "I'm coming for the heavyweight championship, I'm gonna destroy you, etc.", he's an actual threat. Cheers, brother 👍

Surprised the hell out of me back then. I NEVER thought in a million years that WWE would turn Steve Austin heel. What came after that...meh. The stuff with Angle and Vince was funny up until the InVasion angle started. The only thing we got out of that besides the comedy bits is the What? chants...which still happens some 18 years later. I always thought the Austin turn is why WWE was so reluctant to turn John Cena heel. There would be different dynamics involved with Cena but I always thought that. I think WWE seen it as a bust which is they turned him twice and then they turned him back to babyface immediately after Survivor Series 2001.

Cena could have went bad after Mania 28 or 29, could have FU'd Rock after any of those matches. If he did it at Mania 28, Punk could have been a good guy for the rest of 2012, and if he did it at Mania 29, he could have continued the rivalry with a returning CM Punk and could have been a fantastic "corporate Cena" bad guy against Daniel Bryan.

And if Solo thinks the what chants are bad, he should watch a few episodes of Showtime at the Apollo. And mid 90s ECW had MUCH worse chants. So yeah, I'm gonna be pro what chant forever.

How is this not #1? I mean sure Taker losing at WM is shocking but it had to end at some point

because that was worst in terms of where the business is now. wm 30 was worst because it was the sign of the things to come of where we are now. bray Wyatt's career complelty buried by cena and never recovered. cesero reaching his peak here and getting buried. the rise of a more fickle petulant fanbase that was booing batista at the time. {the loud minority over the silent majority or casual fans} and the death of not only the undertaker but the legacy and prestige of WrestleMania as a whole. iwasnever the same after that and bus

the business gotten worse in terms of quality and it led to the rise of brock lesnarss part time championship reign of terror. and takers decline as a result[

Indeed... The "what" chant is one of the main reasons I stopped watching. Not the sole reason but it did play a major factor. Feel free to reply with WHAT!
