Makes sense that System Shock inspired Deus Ex and even Thief since Warren Spector worked on them and pretty much anything he touched was gold.

Took a look at the IGN review. They gave the remake a 9 and yet had the balls to link to their EYE divine cybermancy review in the article, which got an embarassing 5 from them. Pretty funny

I am also old an played the original back in 94 when i was 18. Replayed it somewhen 2000 when i got my hands on the CD version. And now i play the remake (2nd playthrough when i type this) and have a blast. Flaws can be put easily aside when your are a person that is capable to completly dive into a gameworld.

This was excellent, Vlade! And very timely - I'd been waiting for others' input who understood and appreciated the Immersive Sim pedigree it was coming from. I really appreciated you addressing that ahead of time to frame the discussion you were about to have. I'll pick it up this weekend. I also dropped the original after several hours, despite loving SS2/BioShock/Thief/Deus Ex. Glad to see the remake isn't a letdown. Sadly I'm not sure Arkane is going to carry the ImSim torch from here on. While Prey was indeed god-tier, Deathloop was only decent, and if Redfall is an indicator of what they're like 6 years later, I think the great devs left to make Weird West. I'd love to hear more about your history with this design philosophy/subgenre at some point if you felt like talking about Deus Ex or VtM:B.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback, Aristotle, my man! I was actually afraid that I'd spend a third of my video talking about what constitutes ImSims, but I couldn't help myself: there are so many people who don't know what Immesive Sim genre really is. Like I said, it isn't Euro Truck Simulator despite what the Steam tag tells us. As for Arkane, I definitely agree with you 100%, their time is gone and everyone who worked on nuPrey left the studio due to how awful the development process of RedFall was going. But I said "Once in a blue moon" specifically to indicate that their time came and went, and they gave us such wonderful games as Dishonored and Prey. I couldn't get into Deathloop because AI was horrible and locations were barren, unlike their previous titles. It was a sign for things to change for the worse. RIP Arkane, I guess. I'd love to do Deus Ex and VtmB but not in the way of joke-a-minute review, but more of a dissecting walkthrough commentary. I don't know if it's something people would watch, but hey, nothing new under the sun, right?

System shock 1 did age well if you are aware of on the enhanced edition there is a button that switches between mouse pointer and fps mouselook

Being someone who loves these kinds of games, especially Prey and Deus Ex, I had high hopes for this remake as I never played the original. I downloaded and finished the demo, but it gave me a headache, just like you said. It's the first game that's ever done it as I have no problems with flashing lights in other games, but somehow this one succeeded. So, no. I probably won't buy it. Not unless they implement some graphics mode that tones this down so I won't literally feel ill from playing it.

I just finished the game and I'm so satisfied with it. It's the best kind of remake that takes an old, messy title and perfects it. The game holds up perfectly well once it gets that well needed modernizing and I really hope that system shock 3 is more like 1 than 2.

SS2 takes the original then refines and improves it. Up until you ditch the Van Braun SS2 takes the cake for me due to the rpg mechanics, psy and far superior map design (SS2 layout is insanely good). SS is much less lopsided yet obviously inferior in gameplay and design, it just sucks "the many" and citadel SS2 levels suck so much ass Edit: both games stories' are great yet have underwhelming ends so I just hope SS3 has a good end ngl

I don't like treating "immersive sim" as a genre. Even you show footage of Thief, which is not an RPG, right as you describe them as "fps RPGs". There was an old looking glass studios post talking about immersive sim design that's available on the wayback machine but youtube won't let me post it.
