Behind the Name of the Parsha: Judicial Reform.
Shoftim means judges, as this week's portion begins, Judges and police officers shall you appoint for yourself..
The Torah here says the need for both judges and police officers, since a judge is worthless if there's no police officer to enforce.
But the Parsha is simply called judges.
Similarly we find in the verse in Isaiah about the time of Moshiach ואשיבה שופטייך כבראשונה that Hashem will restore our judges, without any mention of police officers. Since at that time there will be no selfishness or need to enforce anyone to do the right thing. It will be our natural desire.
There will however remain a requirement for judges who will teach Torah, pass laws, and provide practical direction in matters of Torah and Mitzvahs.
Our Parsha is therefore simply called Judges.
Oh, and if your a cop, don't worry about losing your job, since everything in Torah is everlasting. You will just change your focus, to assisting the people in fulfilling the directives of the courts. You will now be a community affairs officer, rushing with lights and sirens to help someone do a Mitzvah!
