Shogun: At Osaka Castle Lake, Anjin-San (Richard Chamberlain) is asked by Lord Yoshi Toranaga (Toshiro Mifune), through his Interpreter, The Lady Toda Buntaro Mariko (Yoko Shimada) by what route did he come, and what are his ship and weapons, and to explain the world as he knows it. Anjin-San draws in the sand, and describes how he and his men came through Magellan's Pass. He also explains how The Pope gave The Jesuits the right to China and Japan, and that they are under Portuguese Rule, by The Treaty Of Saragosa. Mariko-San does not think that it makes sense that all of Japan belongs to Spain and Portugal. The Kwampaku, Yaemon (Kenji), The Heir of the late Emperor Taiko, is also present, as is The Lady Kiritsubo-Sama Toshiko (Miiko Taka), who was once Lord Toranaga's Consort, and now she is Mistress of Lord Toranaga's household.
Shogun, The Millions-Of-Copies Sold Novel, was written by James Clavell. The Masterpiece Television Mini Series was Produced by NBC and Paramount Studios, Directed by Jerry London, Screenplay by Eric Bercovici, Director Of Photography Andrew Laszlo, Production Executive Frank Cardea, with Production Designer Joseph Jennings. Shogun starred: Richard Chamberlain (as Pilot-Major John Blackthorne), Toshiro Mifune (as Lord Yoshi Toranaga), Yoko Shimada (The Lady Toda Buntaro Mariko), Frankie Sakai (as Lord Kashigi Yabu), Alan Badel (as Jesuit Priest, The Father Visitor Dell’Aqua), Michael Hordern (as Friar Domingo), Damien Thomas (as Jesuit Priest, Father Martin Alvito), John Rhys-Davies (Portuguese Pilot Vasco Rodrigues), Vladek Sheybal (as Portuguese Captain Ferriera), George Innes (as Ship Hand Vinck), Leon Lissek (as Portuguese Jesuit Father Sebastio), Yuki Meguro (as Samurai Warrior, Kashigi Omi), Hideo Takamatsu (as Lord Toda Buntaro), Hiromi Senno (as Consort Usagi Fujiko), and Nobuo Kaneko (as Lord Ishido Kazunari). Many people were involved in the making of this classic masterpiece. There was an A-List Cast, an A-List Director, an A-List Musical Score from Maurice Jarre, and A-List production quality with amazing sets and intricate costumes, detailed for that time era. Narration by the famous and powerful voice of Orson Welles.

Sadly for the natives in the Americas, their lack of certain war technologies and their lack of immunization to large livestock disease like smallpox wreaked havoc on their populations and allowed the Spanish, Portuguese, French and British to take over their lands steadily. China and Japan had larger populations and had been exposed to livestock diseases from their own cattle and horses. They had developed gun-powder weapons even before Europe so they were not overwhelmed by that battle tech. Plus they had more unified government/military practices that allowed them to stand strong against the foreigners for a time.

To be fair, there is no difference in how the Rus divided up the Cossack lands, or how the various Ottoman Sultans portioned out the various North African territories to their clients and vassals to rule or govern. The Rajputs conquering the Pashtun, and the various Imperial Dynasties in China, the Axumite conquest of the neighboring tribes, Rome, the Macedonians, the Egyptians, Hittites, the list is endless. It's what the powerful do to the weak. It's the game of Nations and Empire. It's everywhere, everyone does it, and everyone always has. We still do it today, we just obfuscate and temporize about it with ourselves and our peers more than we used to. People never change, we just make better tools.

@@daniellitwinI wouldn't say that it's dumbed down. All the necessary information is conveyed. They just operate differently in today's television era. You have to remember that this was made during a time when miniseries were quite literally "novels for television" with lavish running times for each episode. They had time to spend 4 minutes on this, while being outside, showing the real Japanese locales. In the new version, the mood is more tense and less relaxed. Blackthorn conveys all information, he just doesn't name check the actual treaty (That might come later, we don't know). I agree that I don't really like the new version of Mariko, but she is basically translating what she wants Toranaga to know because she doesn't trust blackthorn at all. I thought the new scene worked perfectly, and had its desired dramatic effect. It was just meant to keep the viewer on edge with the Japanese retinue and with Blackthorn. It's far too early to judge the new version. It could turn out wonderfully. We do know that the original script was completely thrown out and they rewrote it with like four Japanese advisors getting approval over every line. So if it turns out great, that's the reason.😂

Yes, I think that, in the book, Blackthorne tried to describe the recent discovery of the Mercator Projection ( i.e. - the method of laying the curved surface of the world out onto a flat sheet of paper ) as being similar to peeling an orange, in that segmental style, and laying the orange skin on the floor... In the book, Toranaga asked Blackthorne to make wooden models of the Earth, inclined at the 23 degrees tilt, with an accurate impression of the land and sea, and details of the known Portuguese bases, from India to Macao, with the numbers of Japanese troops, Ronin, at all the forts... Perhaps, in the 1980 AND 2024 versions, it would have helped, if Blackthorne had peeled an orange, in the correct style, and laid it on the ground...So it would have been obvious to all...
