New subscriber, I started reading it about 2 weeks ago I'm 47 I've been reading all my life and I've never read this book I thought it was about time before the new series came out I remember seeing the reruns of the old series on TV when I was a kid I'm glad that I finally picked it up I needed to read something besides it just a fantasy book and this author has done a great job it is definitely engaging and for it being such an old book The pacing is off the charts

The first 4 episodes of the latest shogun series have been my favorite first 4 eps of ANY show. Really makes me want to read the book

I just started Shogun Audible version.. Didn't know anything about it other than I used to see the book in my friends hands growing up and I think there was a series in the 80s. I saw a new series was out there so thought I'd finally check it out..trying to get some back story .so now I've discovered your channel.. Great stuff!! subscribed!!

The examination of the clash of cultures elevates this book from what could be just an action story/soap opera with political machinations. Not that that would be bad! I’ve really enjoyed this book so far. Great video!

It is such a fun re-read for me...since I know the thrust of the book and how it is going to play out, it is doubly interesting to see the details in act and conversation that lead the reader on 💪💪 let's GO, right?

Great analysis of those opposing views of life and death. I remember you mentioning a re-read of Shogun and it made me think I’m due a re-read because I loved it years ago and wonder if it stands the test of time. I remember being quite in awe of Clavell’s ability to offer such a nuanced view of Japanese culture, making us view it through Blackthorn’s eyes as so alien but at the same time balancing this out with their views of western culture and the understanding and respect that grows in Blackthorn throughout the book. Going to have to re-read it for sure!

Great discussion! I've only recently purchased Shogun for Kindle so it's definitely on my radar. I love historical fiction, and long, in-depth cultural epics. Lately I've been on a Sharon Kay Penman kick, reading her Prince of Wales trilogy that's full of political intrigue. And to hear that Shogun is full of action only makes me more eager to read it. I can't say I've read anything Japan, not that I can recall anyways. My only knowledge of samurai was from the video game Ghost of Tsushima (assuming it's historically accurate, for the most part). Anyways, thanks for the review

My mother read this way back when it came out in the 70's. She speaks pretty highly of it. I may have to get around to reading it someday; I usually like historical fiction, and this certainly does sound like a thorough exploration of culture clash. Have you ever read Silence? It tackles kinda the same thing, albeit mostly from the religious angle.

Great discussion. I really enjoyed the first half but less so the second half. There's a lot of cultural, religious and political intrigue and humour in it. Great effort of you to re-read it, I dont think I would.
