That moment when you watch one of the most universally acclaimed new shows of the decade but can't stop pretending to be James frikin' Cameron long enough to enjoy it.
I felt bad the lady, He completely derailed the rection breaking up the flow for me I couldn't keep watching with this guy saying he is not a pro or anything but then kept going on about how the saturation of the clouds and camera angles off
You are the absolute first and only one of all reviewers who laments about colours. Get your focus straight. Nobody is interested in such minor details.
It was bizarre to see so much attention on largely superficial aspects and not able to keep up with the basic world building, character beats, and plot points. The fact he got lost was telling…just not focusing on what is important.
The showrunners actually addressed this very thing in the lead up to the shows release. The muted colors we see in the show are historically accurate. NOBODY in the world had access to bright color-fast fabric colors in the year 1600. Those rich colors we are used to seeing in modern times come about due to developments in chemistry. Most were invented/discovered in the mid to late 1800's. As such the rich (and wonderful) colors we got in the 1980's adaption of Shogun and other modern depictions are historically inaccurate. A shame that Dunning-Kruger and thinking you know better than the showrunners that have made the news for their devoted attention to detail had to ruin his viewing experience. Because as @melodicroger said. Even if true, its an incredibly unimportant thing to spoil the show over.
Does your husband have any sort of disorder or medical conditions? The fact that the colors are bothersome for him made me think that. It's like someone trying to play a video game when the game displays epileptic warnings before you even play. Does he by any chance have a sensory processing disorder? Many people with that kind of disorder have a difficult time processing bright lights or lights that repeatedly blink or change colors. I'm just curious or rather trying to understand a little bit more. I meant no disrespect. If I were to ask your husband to try watching Ready Player One, with all the lightings & colors then there’s something odd if he has a problem with it. Either there’s a condition/illness effect or that your husband grew up not being able to handle distractions which could be part of his personality. I’m sure everyone has at least answered that in whatever school or psychology survey.
That man is not built for reactions, he's obsessed with all the wrong things. As an individual he may be a chill dude, but in a social situation such as a group of friends trying to have fun watching a show/movie he's the one that shits on the dinner table.
Yeah, everyone knew the Portuguese were trading from Japan, but they had been keeping the safe passage a secret. The main white dude is an English pilot helping a Dutch ship figure out the route and open up trade for the Dutch and the English.
I've heard Sanada comment, in reference to female characters, that not only did they want to bring the accuracy and attention to detail from Japanese period drama but also to shake up some of the conventions for female characters in traditional Japanese drama. Instead of simply defaulting to learned conventions, but having them be more realistically/naturally emotional.
the guy could've saved the deep dive critique for the latter part, he's distracting the lady's focus and enjoyment; i can't count how many times i've uttered 'pack it up for later' to him in the first 15mins alone. if he continues like this, he's gonna ruin any intentional story buildup in whatever you watch together. i'd say he should focus more on the story unravelling than the nitpicking which only distracts himself. taking mental notes should've been a skill required for reactions and for post-watch discussions.
Feel real bad for Viv here, must be annoying af wanting to soak up and get lost in the story being told but constantly having some nerd next to her whining about trivial nonsense like it was the onky thing that matters in the universe.
I hope you get to enjoy Shogun; it's been superb, so far. The best I've seen in a long time. I can't watch any more of this reaction, though. I'm half-way through, and I'm done. I do hope you enjoy the show though.
Love this show. It does have some historical merit too as John Blackthorne is loosely based on the historical English navigator William Adams and Yoshii Toranaga is loosely based on shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, who lead Japan til 1616.
Oof, this was rough to watch, Vivian...perhaps consider solo reactions for episode 2 and on. I don't mind the criticism, (even though it's quite nitpicky) but it's the mainly the distraction from flow/immersion and hijacking of the post-discussion.
Who was the guy watching, is he a Oscar winning lighting nominee. His obsession with the light was weird. The acting the History the plot it all went over his head all he could see was the lighting.
So incredibly insulting to the cinematographer in this show! To disagree with or dislike the colour or lighting choices is one thing, but to call into question their competence & talk as if they are rank amateurs is another thing entirely…this was by far the most annoying review i have watched of any show!
This maybe to much to ask, but next time please do the reaction without your husband. He has been totally negative. I can stand some constructive criticism, but your husband goes too far. I believe that the production crew knew what they were doing especially since Rotten Tomatoes gave a 100% rating. This was one of the greatest tv productions I have ever watched. I did give a thumbs up however because of the great acting and writing. This story is based on real people and the time period is accurate. Sorry if I offended.
I just found your channel and my favorite series. I like you two. You seem so nice together. You Vivian, were so enthusiastic about the series, but Kaji focused more on irrelevant technical things than on the events themselves and what the people were talking about. No wonder you sometimes had to explain things to him. On the other hand, it was also interesting to hear his comments about lighting, color, etc. It's just a shame that those comments took up a lot of time from the otherwise short edited episode. I can't afford to be a patron, so please, slightly longer videos in the future. 😊
This is no white saviour. The Fleshing out a story is the only fictiion. The main characters and occurences are based on Documented Real people and occurrences. Only the names have been changed for both the novel an this show. *John Blackthorne is based on the real English shipbuilder and sailor, and 1st Englishman to reach Japan, William Adams
We’re EXCITED to hear that! It’s so easy to fall into that tired storyline, we hear Cosmo is a great actor so it would be such a disservice to stick him in that type of role.🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Within the first minute she talks about how great it is the production crew paid attention to all the intricate details of Feudal Japan and in the exact same breath says "I hope we see female Samurais" for women empowerment reasons lmao.
Onna-bugeisha were a thing!! There were female firefighters too! We never hear about it much but there’s so much potential here for that side of history to be seen🤗🤗
Vivian, please react without the awkwardly negative and absolutely insufferable gentleman next time. He was too busy complaining to even follow the storyline. Then maybe you can actually enjoy the series, as it seems you were trying to. He was pretty inconsiderate. And then your viewers can actually enjoy the reactions as well.
I WISHHHH😭😭😭…Season 2..? Can I be her long lost sister which got adopted by some settlers but am trying to find my way back home? Can I be glued next to Toranaga-sama…?😁😁
I hated The Last Samurai, which is indeed a White Savior story, but I don't think that is true of Shogun. Blackthorne is more of a witness to Japanese history, than an active agent, driving events. Also, the novel has some foundation in history, Blackthorne being based on real-life Englishman William Adams. Whereas, the character played by Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai was completely fictional.

I find it really touching how you were super focused on what he had to say about the visual effects and cinematography. I see comments about him being annoying however he is giving his perspective and it’s genuine. Didn’t bother me that much. What he had to say was interesting even though we hadn’t noticed it. Thanks for the reaction and I look forward to following the series with you. Make your weekend a great one!
The color schematics and fish eye lens bothered me at first too but I got used to it. I think it goes away later but I think it's used to show how drastic the time period was.
日本には淡いと言う色味があります。 おそらく彼には理解ができません... 非常に不愉快で残念でした。 もし次回レビューされるのであれば 彼女だけでお願いしますm(__)m In Japan, there is a certain color that is called pale. Perhaps he cannot understand... It was very unpleasant and disappointing. If it will be reviewed next time Just her please m(__)m
@kaawofficial you need to chill. No one else I. The world is bother by that minor crap except you. For the love of god and the future of your reaction channel focus on story, writing and acting.
Shogun is so fascinating in its portrayal of political intrigue and the clashing of different cultures. Hope you keep up with the series, it just gets better. Also, don't feel too put-off by the negative comments. The show's cinematography and color palette didn't distract me, but differences in opinion on aesthetics are fine. He was clearly annoyed, but I don't think disrespectful. The worst thing a reactor can be is dishonest. I would rather disagree than be pandered to for clicks.
To be fair I liked this show but I also felt the color was disgusting. I know that showing Japan with colorful pink cherry trees and completely orange sunsets is not realistic but damn, it felt very disgusting after playing Ghost of Tsushima, which was shot 100 time better, but also is clearly artistic oriented and this show is supposed to be more realistic. Although I can't forgive the blue hue we see in every cheap CGI, so I 100% understand your reaction. Same for the music. The Mongol throat singin was very distracting for a "realistic" Japanese show, especially when you know how many beautiful instruments and traditional music Japan has. If it wasn't for the great story, great acting and perfect costume direction I would not have watched it
"He says 'You suck'" Laughed out loud at that one! 😂 Ignore the Negative Nancy's in your comment section. While I agree with them that this is a beautifully shot series, I will say that weird off-focus around the edges of many of the scenes really bothered me for a while! Everybody's got their tastes Glad to see you guys really getting into the episode, despite the distracting cinematic choices! I look forward to seeing what you think of the future episodes, and whether you think the story managed to avoid the "White Savior Complex" by the end. :-) Thank you much for your reactions! Keep them honest, and keep them coming.
😏😏😏 The type of community we love to see! Thank you for being so encouraging, and we both are really loving the show regardless of what people say. Hope you stick around FOREVER! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🤝🏽🤝🏽🤝🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
Come on people cut the man some slack we 've all had movies that were so visually distracting that they had to be rewatched just get the whole story. The only thing is we didn't have a camera on us when it happened.
A lot of people in the comments whining about you criticizing the lighting etc. but I appreciated it, mostly because those were also my thoughts. I've now watched the first 6 episodes and right from the start I was distracted by the use of so much CGI. AND the blue contact lenses! They make him look weird and (what I remember from the books) they are completely unnecessary.
No white savior here only a fictional story based on factual historic characters names changed but still historic a great show, and I loved the older show as well, but then I am older and Cosmo and Chamberlain did it justice in their own ways, but their supporting and sharing cast are what have made both these shows great, brilliant Japanese cast in both of these productions is outstanding.
