I review, breakdown and explain Shogun Episode 4 on FX. I discuss the character Mariko Toda and reveal the real story behind her and how she was inspired by Akechi Tama who was also known as Hosokawa Gracia. I react to the other inspiration and true story in history which is John Blackthorne who was inspired by William Adams, Yoshii Toranaga who was inspired by Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toda Buntaro who was inspired by Hosokawa Tadaoki and also Ishida Mitsunari who is Lord Ishido. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 5.

In the 1980 version of Shogun, the strength and tenderness of Toda Mariko was brought to the screen by actress Yoko Shimada. Thanks to this role, she became the first Asian woman to win the Golden Globe Award for best actress. Sadly, she died nearly penniless in 2022 of cancer. No family claimed her remains, so the local government had her cremated after providing funeral services. An acquaintance did collect the ashes and place them at her parent's grave. There are some sadder parts to this story that I am leaving out.

I have heard some people criticizing Anna Sawai's performance as Mariko that she is not convincing but after seeing this episode I really like her acting and you are not going to expect her to be happy, bubbly and instantly supporting Blackthorn the situation is very intense and she have to be sometimes serious but there are sometimes when she shown her softness and kindness towards the people she loves and Blackthorn. In some points her and Blackthorn have good chemistry ( where people said that Blackthorn and Fuji have more chemistry then him and Mariko) and Mariko is a very interesting character and I'm really excited to see how her character is going to do in the series and this is just only 4th episode Anne Sawai's acting is becoming good and I hope that in other episodes she becomes really good.

I think she's been updated for modern audiences. She's definitely lacking the character portrayed in the book. And I think they're doing it for modern viewers. But the whole Shogun saga is special because of how strange the Japanese customs were to the westerners, and how we would see them as strange today. A woman's duty back then would be considered crazy today, and so they want to betray women as they are today instead of how they actually would have been.

I love Anna's portrayal of Mariko. Mariko is very poised, elegant, and gives off a very strategic vibe. I can't wait to learn more about her background. I did find it strange why no one questioned her ability to fight when they were attacked by the catholics in the forest. She was badass.

Lord Goroda in the books is based on Oda Nobunaga, who was assasnitated by Mariko's father...also a fun fact, Nobunaga is the main villain in the SNES Ninja RPG Innindo...for you nerds out there like me
@nont18411
@nont18411 3 месяца назад
There were some theory as well that the reason Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) put Akechi Tamako (Mariko) under his protection is because he might conspired with Akechi Mitsuhide (Mariko’s dad) to betray Nobunaga. Nobunaga was such a cruel man that when he’s a top dog, he treated his own generals poorly. Akechi hated Nobunaga because Nobunaga led an invasion that got Akechi’s mom killed and also beat up Akechi a lot when he served Tokugawa (Toranaga) a rotten sashimi. Toranaga hated Nobunaga because Nobunaga ordered the execution of his first wife and son because he suspected Toranaga’s wife for plotting a rebellion. Both of them lost their loved ones thanks to Nobunaga so they might planned to rebel together but Toranaga double-crossed Akechi by running away, causing Akechi to commit treason alone and later got killed by Hideyoshi (the Taiko).
@weeboftheleft5113
@weeboftheleft5113 Месяц назад
@@nont18411 There's actually nothing to suggest that Oda Nobunaga was any more 'cruel' then any of his contemporaries, and in fact the Tokugawa were also known to be quite cruel during their rule as well. He was actually known to be quite generous with his generals, and treated them better then most of his contemporaries as he held merit over lineage. Furthermore, Nobunaga did not order Nobuyasu and his Mother's death, Ieyasu himself did when Nobunaga ACCUSED them of being traitors. It was his own decision, that he made on his own to keep his own Daimyo pleased. I would not doubt that Tokugawa could have been involved in the plotting, other then that it happened in such a way that left Ieyasu at a disadvantage, and targeted by the Akechi forces themselves and causing his 'fleeing through Iga' alongside aid of the Hattori clan. Had he been involved in the plotting, he likely would have been better positioned to beat Hideyoshi to the revenge and claim the power, but he failed in that regard.

In the novel, the dictator Goroda (historical counterpart- Oda Nobunaga) went out of his way to insult and denigrate Mariko's father, who snapped one day and murdered Goroda. He then led the Akechi Clan in a rebellion against the man who would become the Taiko, who was jealous of Akechi. She expected to die but to spite her Buntaro refused her permission to commit seppuku, so Mariko refused to have sex with him and insulted him in private whenever she could. She had converted to Christianity in the wake of her father's rebellion and it helped her deal with the pain and loss. Toda Mariko had long sought revenge against the Taiko's family for the destruction of her clan and family, and the mission to extract the hostages from Osaka Castle suited that revenge nicely.

Mitsuhide, pronounced meet-soo-hee-day. Japanese is very hard for us native English speakers to pronounce, but I feel it's important to get people's names correct. Learning how vowels are pronounced in Japanese helps curb the temptation to apply English vowel rules to this very different language. A, E, I, O, U for Japanese is ah, eh, ee, oh, ooh. I'm not an expert, but had a Japanese teacher in martial arts and had to figure some of this out to be respectful.

Honnoji Incident(Akechi killed Oda(Kuroda) by the troops of 13,000) is one of the maximum mystery of Japanese history. There is another mystery. "Nikko Tosho-gu Shinto Shrine" (World Heritage Site) is the famous tourist spot .It's constructed as graveyard of Tokugawa Ieyasu(Toranaga) and it plays a role of guardian deity of the capital Tokyo(Edo) , and it's located in the due north of Tokyo (Japan has culture of vengeful spirit and feng shui(Chinese Astrology)). Another mystery is that there is the strange place name near the Nikko Tosho-gu.The name is "Akechi-daira(plain)" Why did Tokugawa Shogunate give the name of the traitor !?

You mentioned that you have not read Clavel's novel or seen the 1980 miniseries. You should definitely read the book because this version of the miniseries leaves out many things that are explained in the book. For example the escape from Osaka castle in this version is very puzzling. Blackthorne's antics go completely unexplained and seem to make no sense. Finally you should see the 1980 version. It is a much better story. Much stronger than this version. I find this version unnecessarily dark making it often hard to see the action. The costuming and props are great but the presentation of the story is weak. With 10 hours to work with they could created a much better product. On the other hand I have enjoyed your historical pieces about the real Japanese history. The real people were fascinating. Well done.

This version is very well done. Very enjoyable. It is done,however, from the perspective of the Japanese. The novel dealt with John Blake thrones journey from "barbarian" to " civilized". This version hasn't shown his attempt to learn the language and his struggle to understand the Japanese people and traditions. Unfortunately, it would take many more episodes to fully develop the many layers involved in the novel.

When a woman married, she left her father's family and entered the family of her husband. That is why Mariko is the only one of her family who is still alive, and still keep her nobility position. She is legally no longer in her father's family. Socially she cannot escape the association. All her unmarried sisters belong to her father's family and they die.
