Anna Sawai is a master of languages. Her American-accented English is flawless, yet she said on Jimmy Kimmel's show that she is more comfortable speaking in Japanese than English. On Shogun, she speaks English in an accent that matches Blackthorne, definitely not an American accent on the show.

I knew when I saw this scene I was going to see a bunch of men on the internet comparing a sombre, adult, grounded in reality historical drama to a space opera fantasy made with children in mind lol

I agree the characterization of the women in Shogun was fantastic, given the socio historical context, but to compare it to a space fantasy and imply there's one way to write women characters when the way women are treated is LARGELY dependent on society is fucking dumb

@@KC-2049 Storytelling is an aesthetic, and characterization is part of storytelling. Study some literature, it helps. But you know what's reaallllly dumb? Putting down great works by Lewis, Carrol, Wells, Herbert, Asimov, Heinlein, Verne, Simmons, and so many others because they're "space opera fantasy" and not worthy of comparison with realist literature. Now THAT'S dumb. Lol.

I think Anna Sawai will be for Lead Actress.

Haven't read the book nor watch the previous show outside of snippets, but the subtleness is ingrained in Japanese culture back then and now so I guess it'd would be more accurate and appropriate. Perfectly in line with what they wished to represent, a more accurate depiction of Japanese history and culture in Western shows.

@@TheExorcismus In the book and the 80s show, their relationship eventually became an ongoing love affair in which they were sleeping together every night on their way back to Edo or something. I recall that in their book Learning From Shogun, the Japanese historians said that the most “dazzling innovation” that Clavell pulls off in his story is “arranging a love affair between Blackthorn and the wife one of the most powerful Daimyo” and making her behave more like a JAL stewardess than a female Samurai. They really toned that down a lot in the new show and contextualised it in a more believable way (I seem to remember Alvito asking Mariko about “dark thoughts” or something, too, which I don’t think was in the book or 80s show.)

it's based on a novel - it should be classified as historical fiction, which Sanada himself has stated. There are many real elements of history involved but there are going to be differences.
