This song perfectly describes a relationship with a narcissist. Every single lyric is exactly how I felt in a narcissistic relationship. This song gives me goosebumps because it shows the cycles I went through. Plenty of people would ask why I didn’t leave earlier, but in abusive relationships, you grow traumatic bonds (intermittent positive rewards). You crave for the next high (emotionally speaking) of when the abuser will be nice again and treat you right. The cognitive dissonance can be so confusing and contribute to staying in these toxic relationships for years. The lyrics in the song depict cognitive dissonance with an abuser so greatly when Shontelle says, “Keep tellin' myself that its not worth it. I already know I don't deserve it, but if its from you I don't mind hurting.” Please know you deserve better than being in an abusive relationship with anyone. Many don’t know about trauma bonds and cognitive dissonance and how difficult it can be to finally walk away. Research about it, especially if you feel this song resonates with you as it does for me so strongly. If you can, get into trauma therapy and find your self-worth again through healing! Thank you for your comment. I lost my husband of 35 years two months ago. It was definitely a toxic relationship but we truly did love each other. We would split up for a year or two then get back together and be the happiest ever. Then 6 months to a year later be fighting all the time again. It was always me initiating the break up. He was always hanging on for dear life to our relationship so it always seemed as though he loved me more. Anyhow, he passed two months ago and I'm really, really struggling with it. This song hits a spot though.
Its so hard to let go of those relationships that cause you so much confusion and hurt. you love them but they will never love you like they should, and sometimes that's the hardest thing to admit. I'm so glad I let go and this song perfectly describes how i felt

i woke up! i know my worth during it all i knew it was wrong but u couldnt allow myself to let go he abused me used me and manipulated i was in love with a narcissist but god be the glory had given me the strength though it makes its harder that am carrying his child i know me and my child will get through this. im healing and learning to love myself again!
