When you edit nighttime shots just use the noise reduction settings in your editing program. Depending on what your shooting this works amazing and can kill almost all of the grain, but it does reduce sharpness on detailed surfaces, so doesn't work great for certain types of photography but for the types of things I shoot at night it like cars, neon signs, reflections, etc it works great.

Great video, Nolan. I remember watching some of your first videos about 10 months ago and it's been a real joy to see how quickly you are progressing in your filmmaking career. I think it's a powerful statement showing what a young motivated photographer can do in particular with micro four thirds gear in this current craze of full frame everywhere.

Very cool, Nolan!! Thanks much!! I'm actually looking at the Sigma 16 as my next lens because I really want something much faster than the kit lens I have now. My dream lens is the Voigtlaender 17.5 mm but it's so far out of my price range. Also, since I often self film for my home movies, I really wanted the Panny 8-18mm but also a little pricey. So I'm pretty sure it's going to be the Sigma 16.

Hoping to get your take on the Olympus 12-40 2.8 against your pick of the Pana 12-35 2.8 as a fast zoom in your dream kit. Aside from Dual IS and relative weight, the 12-40 seems to be on par if not better than the 12-35 in other aspects such as manual focus (with the focus clutch), parfocal characteristics, nearly all-metal build quality, and in many markets, a better value for the price.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 5 лет назад
The Olympus pro line is for sure waaaay nicer in the build quality department. And the manual focus clutches on them are pretty amazing 👌 it really depends I guess, if build and manual focus are super important to you, the 12-40 makes a lot of sense! That dual IS capability in the pany just sounds so incredible for myself 👌

With each +1 stop (iso or aperture) the sensor receives twice much more light than with the previous stop. That means that there is 2x more light if you jump from Iso 200 to 400, or go from 2.8 to 1.8. For instance, if you just increase your iso from 200 to 400 and open your iris from 2.8 to 1.8, the sensor is receiving 4 times more light. than with iso 200 at 2.8.

You may be into wedding films but your situations are so much similar to any one else's. For instance, you say you have two lenses of f1.2 and you don't need to fiddle with the settings when you change lenses makes so much sense. So many times it has happened that I come back from shoots to find that the settings have ruined my footage. Thanks for all the info.

Just bought a G85 with 12-35mm f2.8, should I also get the 42.5mm or 25mm f1.7 ? Please let me know I want to get a prime lens :)
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 4 года назад
I would say the 42.5 would be a great portrait length lens for longer interview shots! You already have the 25mm covered with the 12-35. You would just get better lowlight and bokeh with the 25mm than the 12-35. But I would say go with the 42.5! I think it's also Dual I.S. compatible as well 👍🏼

Hi Nolan! Really appreciating all your g85 videos. I’m currently stalking eBay looking for a good deal. My plan is to get g85 as my first camera and practice a lot this summer and get very familiar with it. Then over next couple years upgrading to a gh5/gh5s and maybe a blackmagic 4K 4/3 mount after that. I like this plan because I’ll be able to use all the glass as I upgrade. Couple questions: 1. is there a reason you don’t use in body noise reduction as a way to reduce noise on a low light image? Does NR lower image quality? 2. I haven’t seen you mention fly by wire focusing in any videos yet, is that not a problem for you? I hear from many filmmakers it is very annoying for manual focus. For that reason I’m looking at getting an Olympus pro 12-40 2.8 as my first lens instead of native Panasonic. Any experience with that Olympus lens or any comments on fly by wire focusing vs linear? Thanks!!
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 4 года назад
Hey! That sounds like a great plan! Very well thought out. So noise reduction isn't a huge deal one way or the other, but any noise reduction in-camera will take away a bit from the sharpness of the image. And because of the lack of processing power, if you need noise reduction you should just go with a Red Giant or Neat Video noise reducer which maintains much better quality than in-camera. Does that make sense? Also, I would HIGHLY recommend shooting with a manual focus ring and NOT fbw like you mentioned. If you don't use manual focus much then it's not a big deal, but im constantly manually focusing so it's a deal-breaker for wedding films. Otherwise, yes! I've used some of Olympus' pro series with the focus clutch and they are amazing! Great quality and super great for focusing if you get the ones with the focus clutch 👍🏼

I've lost 2 auctions on ebay trying to buy a G85 from a private owner. Are those online stores the sell on ebay reliable? @NolanGunn

I really cant speak for the 18-35, but zooms (typically) arent as sharp as primes. I would think the primes would be a little sharper, but ive seen footage from the 18-35 and its gorgeous! So really you cant go wrong either way. I would say the 18-35 is much much bigger. So just keep that in mind!

Make sure you're shooting F/1.4 to let in the most light. Otherwise, with 24p video try to shoot at a 1/50 shutter speed so you won't get that blur. Other than that, I would invest in lights if you really need better lowlight.

I'm not sure the sigma 16 has a Canon mount, but yes! The G85 has I think a 1.1-1.2 x crop (really minimal) in 4K. But for me I'm really enjoying the speedbooster! The Canon mount lens selection is great! And you add a stop of light 👌🏼

As I'm planning to pick a g85 in some time soon, where in India g85 with 14-42mm kit lens it costs around 650$, on the other hand with 14-140mm kit lens it costs around 1000$. Do you think 14-140mm is worth to buy or should I pick the gh5 with 14-42 kit lens and get the viltrox speedboaster. Kindly suggest me some good ef mount lenses (zoom lens and prime lens). Thanks again!
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 4 года назад
@@meshach2498 so what I'm using a lot of now is a GH5, viltrox efm2 ii, and a sigma 18-35. It's been a killer combo! Obviously pretty expensive. It really depends, what are you primarily shooting? If I was to go general, I would say get a speedbooster and a zoom, either the Sigma 17-50 or 18-35. If you want prime, then probably a 35mm (sigma, Rokinon DS, or yonguo if you want cheap). If you want native, then the 25mm 1.7 is a cheap good place to start, and then upgrading to the 1.4 or 1.2 in the future. Or a happy medium is the sigma 16 1.4 with is great!
