I just have to say Kudos on keeping your composure, and being really cool when interacting with him. How did you keep your composure when reviewing his photos and the settings they were shot at??? I'm floored, like I can't make sense of what he was trying to do.

Tell it how I see it champ. The composition was terrible, the exposure was woeful and that "flash" was so hot on the models face. There was nothing professional about his work, hence why he doesn't post work for anyone to see.

I preferred Ken's photos and personality. The other guy is very vain... And has a poor sense of humor. Not to mention, the subjects here are so pointless and empty. The other guy had very nice lighting, but the suffocated framing, lack of attention to 'looking space' made his compositions largely incorrect. If I shot this, I'd be very uninspired. Boring subjects, complete lack of story and you're just annoyed because Ken exposed this situation in his photos perfectly.

I just seen a video Ken made on lighting recommendations.. He talks about how you really need fast recycle times so your not left standing there looking like an "idiot" waiting on the flash to recycle. But, here he is walking around with a lampshade on a string. I really am at a loss for words.
@Delphisteve

Ken reminds me of just about every camera salesman I've ever known. FULL of BS from the word go and can't take decent photographs to save his life no matter how much he spends on gear or how many hundreds of cameras and lenses he buys. He couldn't have enough time to get to really know a particular camera for having to rush out and get the next best thing.

I don’t think Ken claims to be the best photographer. He just loves gear, which is fine. Some people enjoy photography for the technical aspects of it, and others are more artistic. I am also more of a technical guy! I like testing lenses and checking out their quirks. I don’t pretend to know how to take the best pics in the world.

This was just uncomfortable until the photographers found the shade. There was a need for a large reflector to balance the harsh overhead light. Sparring was embarrassing. The light improved and the pictures got better. Ken needed an assistant or, a stand or, even a bracket for his flash. He set himself up a little. An XT3 and some good primes and, a good strobe and, a reflector and he could have moved around and freed his creative brain to get the images. His overly close proximity to the model could have been a factor in getting the model to look relaxed. The Horse Park was a distraction. They should have gone really early in the morning and got some more reportage style backgrounds and fewer distractions. I think they should plan a shoot together and act as assistants for each other. The dialogue would be more interesting and they could do a joint pop-up exhibition. Jason’s first shot bordered on parody, was it sharpened? Every crumb of makeup was revealed. Both photographers had good moments and some work in post could be more compelling. This was hard going.

Ken did not edit photos out of camera just so you all know. You can do allot in Lightroom and photoshop. I would like to see Jason's raw file for the real comparison on images. If you are comparing camera gear show raw files.

Alex Kuzmenko You dumb arse. This is exactly why he didn't edit his photos, because he knows he cannot match JL on photography and lighting, and it's easier for some dumb idiot to protect him, stand up for him, by saying " the images weren't edited, I'd like to see both sets of images unedited". Why do you think that JL did this episode of videos with the meet up and now photo shoot? It was clearly to shut his fat tattooed arse up, once and for all, whether it's regarding JL and his hat or regarding Sony. JL chewed him up and farted him out.

I like that Honeycomb Beauty Dish Ken is using... It's compact.. pretty handy when you don't want a stand.. The drawback though is you have to be close to the subject... as I noticed putting a filter when using HSS to my Speedlight(Sony HVL-58am) greatly reduces the lighting. Tiffany is great too. Simple but Beautiful.

Love this video! Just found it!!!! Two of my favorite youtube photogs. It's like watching the odd couple. Cool cats, but in extraordinarly different ways. I have to say Jason you hands down are far better at the model shoot. Beutiful pics on the fly with just a camera and lens. Ken spends way too much time in his cave avoiding people, and obviously not nearly as comfortable working with models. Ken also brought his beast camera to maybe win the Big Dick camera contest when he could have brought any of a dozen other cameras that would have worked much better. Limited his lens choice and it showed. So what if you can count every one of her poors if the pics are Meh to average. This opens my eyes to Ken being a bit of a photo gear weenie. Biggest, best, 5 of every high end camera, but what dose he do with them. I would love to see the product pics he always talks about. I would love to see a model shoot out between you two armed with only pentax k1000's, or the digital equivalent.......Nikon D50's, or any other basic, basic low end consumer camera. Jason, you would win hands down there is no doubt.

Jason shouldn't have edited his pictures just like Ken. I see a lot of Jason's pictures with heavy HDR effect, I don't find that attractive at all but he has some that are good. Ken is fun to watch and he knows about gear and likes to advice people. I'm not a huge fan of any of these two guys photography work but I support their work. I like Lisa Holloway a lot better, she's a good photographer and her editing skills are amazing.

This really isn't much of a comparison. You cannot compare the size of the GFX Medium format to the A9. Ken needed to bring the XT-2 or something like that. 24mp vs 24mp, just DX vs FX but I have to tell you, if I were shopping for the GFX, this would not be a video that would help me buy one......A9 maybe but not GFX.

@foulweatherworks7831
@foulweatherworks7831 5 лет назад
There are specific problems when using a flash in conjunction with the sun or bright ambient light when you have a camera like the GFX which has a dismal standard sync speed of 1/125th of a second which is the fastest the camera can shoot without the flash hitting part of the shutter apparatus as it moves out of the way to reveal the film/sensor. Just thinking about the sun exposure for a second at 1/125th with Iso 100 you need an aperture of f16 for proper sun exposure, since in stills the flash exposure is controlled by the aperture alone, you need a very powerful flash to get to f16 at any reasonable distance. So high speed sync is used for two reasons, one would be to shoot outside in the day with a shallow depth of field (wide aperture), so some flash companies make HSS available on some cameras to get a faster shutter sync speed, maybe even up to the fastest shutter speed of the camera, which allows you to bring the f-stop down. The other use is to be able to bring down the ambient light to below the flash exposure without needing gigantic lights. So if you are shooting on a sunny day, and you can get HSS to get you a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second, at Iso 100 you’re at f8, which is somewhat reasonable for a 500 or 1000w/s flash. then, if you want to turn down the ambient you would increase the shutter speed to 1000th leaving the aperture at f8 so now you’ve kept your flash exposure the same but the sun is now a stop below, you can increase this by another stop if you want.

Ken is not half the portrait photographer than Jason Lanier is, so I wasn't expecting much. But what I learned from this video is that the Fuji Medium Format mirrorless system is obnoxiously large and I am not likely to ever use it. And where are the zooms? Comment on the shoot- I wrote this on my blog and have also written it on Facebook. But I wanted to leave a comment so people can see it here as well. I'm grateful that Ken took me up on the offer to meet and shoot. It took courage for him to do so and I applaud him for doing it. I found Ken to be nothing but kind, courteous and very sweet. Ken chose to send in his shots unedited, while I edited my shots. Those were decisions that we both made. There were absolutely no pre conditions to this shoot. We could bring whatever gear we wanted and edit the shots however much we wanted. Ken focuses on gear, I focus on shooting. As a professional photographer and shooter I choose to finish my work. Ken shoots far less and chose to post his shots unedited. To be honest with everyone, I really could care less how great Ken's shots turned out. I was so happy to see him out there and shooting which is something I've been challenging him to do for years. He earned my respect for his courage to do this, not for any photography skills that he possesses....great or small. I'm sure we'll have comments positive and negative....but my hope is that we can look at this event as a positive of two former rivals coming together and sharing a great day together. I'll ask my followers to please be respectful with your comments towards Ken. It's fair for anyone to say what they think of the video and shoot, but I just encourage my followers in Fedora Nation to keep it classy. Let's be the example of the best photography community out there....because that's what I'm trying to build...::) Thanks, Jason

Thought i would finally watch this video in its entirety, and what a complete and utter shocker it is! 1, Kens white balance is terrible, too green, which is caused by all that foliage and green grass, no compensation for the green hues, at all. 2, Where is the bokeh? Images that needed the bokeh lacked bokeh immensely, the back grounds were so untidy and distracting. 3, Kens light mod just failed big time, too many shiny skin reflections, sometimes to the point where her skin looked greasy, such ugly highlights/hotspots! 4, Also on the subject of that light mod, surely the reason to bring in a second light source for a shoot is to bring overall balance to an images exposure? Why then, are the backgrounds all blown out? Where is the detail in the sky? Why are the images incorrectly exposed? 5, He never stoops down lower to get a flattering angle, all his images were shot from above her eye level, which does work well, but sadly not in any of kens images here, the poses look so awkward from that angle, the image of her with her arms up and over her head by the barn door was so amateurish that it was embarrassing. 6, He does not fully understand what high key exposures really are, as id evident around 18 minutes into the video. 7, He seems like he is using a wider angle lens when he gets in close, the distortion to the poor girls face makes her look like a stroke victim ffs! Photography is not an easy thing to learn i guess, but surely with all the years he claims to have been a photographer, surely his images should be much, much better than this? His skill set seems to be just one notch up from the guy who uses on-camera flash to shoot a sunset! The images look like my images when i first picked a camera up over 30 years ago! There is absolutely no finesse in his work, no artistry, no creativity (aside from that silly light mod), and barely any understanding of exposure if these images are anything to go by. Taking photography advice from him is like being given cookery lessons from someone who cannot boil an egg properly!

I bet Wheeler regrets doing this photo shoot. Clearly, he is no photographer. Not even a good amateur one. Lanier probably could have beaten Wheeler with a smartphone or a ten year old compact camera. I actually feel bad for Wheeler.

I'm not even surprised about AP's terrible shots. I always knew he's not a real photographer. Anyone can hang on RU-vid and photography forums long enough to know about camera and lenses and actually start sounding like he knows photography. I busted this guy long ago when I asked to see his portfolio and he couldn't show shit.
@vincedemarchis7238
@vincedemarchis7238 7 лет назад
if you notice AP really doesn't understand light . Apart from incorrect exposure he also doesn't pay attention to the light falling on the models face. In many of AP pics the nose has an ungainly highlight which ruins the photo. Jason saw this and his pics look amazing. I think its time AP really goes back to the drawing board and learns about light.

I feel bad for the model.. the work by both is so subpar how do people like this teach people when they over process, don't know how to shoot worth a crap and hardly use light or shade in a fashion that actually can produce good photography. I guess you have to learn somewhere but so many bad techniques especially in the retouching side of things. Tone down on the Frequency Separation holy crap. Would rather have 2 people use video instead of having an assistant with a bounce card or a reflector or and scrim or anything that can help these photos work. (1 video, one assistant).
