In this short video I cover how to set your camera for kelvin white balance, why this is important, and how it helps you save time when editing photos. There's even a special tip on using live view to visualize the kelvin white balance settings.

Thank you. I have a Nikon D7200 and this ability I now have to adjust the Kelvin value in live view is brilliant. One of the most useful things I have learnt. Sitting in a living room lit by a TV and a lamp. Just adjusted the camera with no issues at all. Thanks you.

Interesting! Thanks! I don't often hang with 'Pro Photographers', but can't say I've ever seen someone adjusting their white balance prior to taking an image! I suppose the newer cameras these days have the Auto feature that represents very well an overall good 'white balance' choice, so perhaps we all just rely on, and making that single adjustment in LR as needed, although again I don't find mine to be off much at all on my D750 in it's Auto 1 WB setting. I did just try a 5000K setting here in the living room of our home, and found it to be too 'blue' for my liking, so it makes me think as an amateur with regard to 'white balance' settings...I can see making these changes would be time consuming, then once again having to find the best overall camera settings after that! Most that I know, tend to use 'auto' everything, and then use LR (or their favourite editing software) to adjust to their liking, still getting stunning results. There again, that's with Landscape photography for the most part.

Glad you found the video helpful. Yeah, the live view stuff is what makes it so awesome. A quick visual check and you're ready to go.

Nice video! OK... newbie question: Does it really matter to adjust WB or anything for that matter if you shoot in RAW and then later edit in LightRoom? Or are you adjusting the WB and then editing jpegs?
@emmaandrews459
@emmaandrews459 10 месяцев назад
I adjust the wb when shooting raw. It helps to cut time in editing later and keeping photos consistent

I was always on AWB until I found the images in some light dull or too much colour cast I now only shoot in a preselected setting or a my own manual setting and yes saves a lot of time later post processing in fact I don't use post processing most now so much if at all Even in a grey day I have natural colours and hues

hi good video can you please tell me how to achieve and/or adjust using a D7100
@Hunterphotographic
@Hunterphotographic 5 лет назад
Colin Gill I’m not familiar with the controls on the D7100. However, I know shooting in Kelvin white balance and live view is possible. Maybe check the manual. Just download the PDF manual from Nikon and do a search for kelvin and live view. You should find the answer pretty quick.

i can’t really find any info on this.. but my camera doesn’t actually have a K option for kelvin which is odd. i can’t adjust it by number.. i have to use an image.. i don’t understand at all because when i watch some videos they just click k on their camera and switch it as they like but i can’t really exactly choose.. i can pick a white image.. but it’s still not perfect!

You explain things so simple and clear. You deserve more subs. Quick question so for film should I worry about setting the kelvin? Isn’t it already controlled by the film stock i buy?
@Hunterphotographic
@Hunterphotographic 6 лет назад
Sy Eckbe correct, you don’t need to set the white balance (kelvin) for film. That’s just a digital thing. But, be careful shooting normal daylight film indoors under incandescent lights. The orange indoor lights will lead to bad results. Indoor window light is fine as is outdoor and flash.

Hunter Photographic Any other film recommendations? Im considering Kodak Portra for portraits, Cinestill 800T for night scenes, and Ilford HP4 for that B&W grainy look...any thoughts? Thank you for your time. You are a life saver. I am so excited to get back into film again since my college years.

Sy Eckbe those are some great film stocks. Just start there and then try new things once you get a hang of each one.

How do you set Kelvin in mixed lightings? And how about when you're using flash?
@Hunterphotographic
@Hunterphotographic 3 года назад
That can be tricky. You either have to find a balanced middle between the two light sources, or change the lighting. For example shooting indoors with window light and interior lighting. I will typically turn off the interior lights in favor of the window light.

@@Hunterphotographic how about when using flash?
@deraldgross5181
@deraldgross5181 2 года назад
I adjust the kelvin in camera to the ambient light and then gel the flash. Example: the room is lit by primarily tungsten lighting I use a CTO (color temperature orange) gel on the flash for my subject to capture their natural skin tone. If you don't correct they will be very orange in appearance. The same would apply to the other end of the scale in which you would use a CTB (Color temperature blue) gel to correct the light on the subject.
@lukemakayabu4369
@lukemakayabu4369 6 лет назад
does this apply to black and white photography?
@Hunterphotographic
@Hunterphotographic 6 лет назад
Strangely, yes. It does apply to B&W *digital* photography and here is why. As you adjust the underlying kelvin setting, the colors change. In particular, the skin tone of your subject changes. Depending on the B&W mix you used for the conversion, the white balance setting can have a wild effect. Even if you desaturate the image to achieve the B&W conversion, the white balance setting will still have an effect.

Thanks, interesting video but things are never really that simple - Kelvin in physics will eventually take you into way more than light temperature, it ends up going into the force of Gravity! Kelvin Scale is NOT a measurement of the temperature of light at all. Kelvin is the measurement of absolute temperature. Light is just part of the Kelvin scale. You can use Kelvin for much more than the temperature of light, it is a scale to measure thermodynamics, you can measure light temperature but that is just one component. How about noise temperature? Kelvin is used to measure noise in electronics, it can be used as a comparison of the signal to noise ratio as another example. Please don't tell people that they do not understand Kelvin when you yourself do not understand it. Light temperature does not fall into the middle of the scale whatsoever, Kelvin will range from 0 (absolute Zero) then to 273, which is around the freezing point of water, 293 which is about room temperature, 22C, but it goes way beyond that up to 10 to the power of 32, which is quite hot if you were to touch it, it might burn you a little as it is around the temperature, then you need to look at the big bang theory, and the Planck theory. Kelvin is a lot more than light temperature.
@deraldgross5181
@deraldgross5181 2 года назад
He was referring to understanding it as it pertains to the scale available in camera and how it it used in photography. He was not addressing the scientific wherewithal of the subject. It's amazing that in every video there always has to that one troll in the thread that has to impart his vast useless knowledge to masses to draw attention to himself and say hey look at me I am smarter than everyone. His explanation was spot on as it implies to photographers and how it is used in photography. He was not addressing the theoretical physics crowd. Good job and explanation Hunter Photographic. Don't let the spot light seeking trolls get you down.

the best cameras to take pictures in Kelvin ..........are the Olympus , they get over 10.000 up to 15.000 ........most of the cameras have up to 10.000 maximal ! test for yourself if you don't believe .
