Superb advice. The latest smartphones are excellent "B cams" / "C cams" to supplement your Primary cam....As you said,professional stabilization & audio is essential.

Very helpful (all tips still relevant in 2021). Also would like to suggest a Bluetooth remote to start and stop recording that you can hold off screen in your hand, to avoid leaning forward to manually turn recording on/off.

Great video - thanks. I just started a series of videos for teaching using a Samsung S9+ after years on iPhone, so I used the old video for reference and it made a ton of difference. I didn’t realise you could lock the front facing camera so I’ll definitely try that one. I tried Open Camera but the phone just freezes - didn’t work for me. Love the channel.

This was excellent! Even looking at the native camera in my OnePlus 8, I didn't know you could tap on your face and increase/decrease the exposure in the front facing camera. Thank you, Justin, such excellent tips. Perfect for (relatively new) video newbies like me. I'm always looking for easy ways to improve my videos and my channel. Justin, thanks a lot for updated version of tutorial and reiterating fundamental tips of professional shooting. It was nice, concise and effective tutorial. I have one query as follows: Voice-over is generally done by connecting mic to laptop and using video editing software. This is the simplest method. Is there any other voice-over practice where one records voice separately (by using external recorder) and attempts aligning given audio with corresponding video by using video editing software? Reference scenario is - I am giving step by step demo on mobile for some utility app. Here I am shooting mobile screen (instead of screen capture) mutely to bring more engagement and then adding voice to it later. While shooting mobile screen I am sure you must have encountered some issues and then surmounted them. So it would be great if you share those best practices. Once again thanks for mentoring, guiding and motivating us 👍🏼
Thanks Digital Life, I'm not too sure what your question is here.. but if you use an external recorder you can sync the audio up with the recording in your editing, OR on Android and iOS if you're recording your phone screen you can record audio at the same time. On android, use the DU recorder app and that will do audio too.
Justin, thanks for response. 😀 My question was - is there any voiceover practice where you record your voice in the separate recorder (instead of laptop) and then try to align the recorded audio by using video editing software? But it seems that it will be complicated and rarely someone does that 😀 so better I'll proceed with the standard voiceover method. After seeing your videos on "shooting with smartphone", I gained confidence in smartphone's camera capabilities & postponed the purchase of DSLR camera 😉 Thanks again 😀👍🏻
I just started using my phone for my videos I thought man I need to find a video editor I was wrong my phone has a really good selfie camera and even better back Camara and it has a included video editor I was so surprised
I would like to ask how do we deal with overheating of the phone when doing videos. I used a sony xz and the video app at times shut down from overheating within 5mins or so. Or do you have other recommend options I would greatly appreciate. Thanks.

You videos are the best I have seen on how to use Androids for creating videos. (And I have looked at a lot!). You cover a lot of content in each video. Do you use a teleprompter, and if so can you give some detail on what you use and where you set it up? If not, do you just do clips that are short enough for you to remember the content and then start another clip for the next bit of content? You're very natural on camera so I'd love to know what you do. :-)
Thanks! I use a teleprompter for a lot of videos when we're using an actual camera, not as much when we're using a phone like this one. Anyone know if I can use the external mic on Galaxy A11. I searched and found it says to set something to external, but there is no such setting in camera or sounds. Driving me nuts trying to figuer this out to get better sound for RU-vid videos without having to hold my phone close to me!! So far I've just done live Facebook ideas and downloaded them to my computer then transferred to youtube. Got to be an easier way that is simple for a mic that works with my phone. I tried my Sony clip I use with my computer, but got some horrible noise!
This is all good stuff. In particular the items covering the basic bonehead errors that bedevil many early attempts, that can steal your enthusiasm. Been there, done that! One I'd add is getting comfy in front of a camera, and to keep your diction not over-hurried, also clear and precise. Better too - to lose as much as possible of any strong regional accent you may have. It's fine to sound Irish, Welsh, Aussie, American etc. But it should be a neutral version of whatever accent might be yours. To be as understandable as possible - to as many as possible. I've done many, many practice shots-to-camera that were only ever shot to get used to the rather odd process of talking to someone you don't know and who isn't even there! It can end up being very, very easy to ramble unnecessarily too. As might be seen by the length of this "brief" comment! :)
Great video. I really like the tips that you are giving and have started to make my own videos. Any suggestion how to avoid the sound of wind when shooting outside. I do shoot outside cooking videos if that info helps.
Justin, the Android pie update to my Samsung Galaxy s9 has completely removed all video manual controls and no more pro mode. What do you suggest? what are you going to do when they update your s8? Samsung seems to have no answer for this. Please help. Thanks.
Hi, I have followed loads of your videos and learnt most of what I am able to do now from you. But I have a problem. Can you help me on this: I am a newbie video maker (just course videos for Skillshare using my Samsung S8..my real thing is painting!) To get better lighting on my lesson subject, I bought a softbox with CFL bulb (and use other lights from around the room), and seem to understand that the strobe effect playing back in my videos is the fps rate and alternating current. By recording at 60fps 1080 FHD this seems to go away from playback, but, now my question is, If I edit then save at 30fps as required by Skillshare (I have learned how to use Handbrake to make it into a lighter file) will it ruin the playback on the platform? Or maybe there are better ways to record videos with my Samsung S8 to get a good and clear quality video? Thanks!!
