I like how the creators of the matrix first had a more complicated and in-depth story but the production team and backers said that the public is too stupid and would not understand so they changed the matrix. The humans are not batteries but are instead a neural net that helped with processing. This processing also ended up being the backbone for the matrix its self. This is why when one of the humans became woke they could manipulate the system. Like a dream, the matrix is a symptom of the processing and not the cause. The battery idea is kinda a front even in the story and is there to make the dumb people happy but the truth is told in the story later on when neo talks to the architects from halo and destiny.

James' Agent Smith impersonation is scarily accurate.
