some of these 8x10s are like $5k each, what an honor to have your photo taken by such an amazing camera and photographer!
@NGC1433
@NGC1433 3 года назад
$5k? So, like any good current camera? (I shoot with an Ikonta I got in a thrift store for $50 and an eos 60d btw)
@calebbrenden9257

this particular camera from intrepid is $600. But each polaroid exposure is about $16 each so the film is what would add up super quick lmao

@@calebbrenden9257 I think this is a Chamonix 8x10. They sell new for around $3500.

@@NGC1433 Hahaha true, I suppose my point is more that it's cool to see an older style camera being used with glass that's still in great condition. The price of these camera usually refers to the condition they are kept in rather than the tech being insane.

I find it quite funny how we think its weird that people didn't smile on photos back in the day, yet here we are, with most people not smiling
@xAudiolith
@xAudiolith 3 года назад
It really is quite funny when you think about it. Back then people didn't do it because they weren't used to the medium probably and wanted a serious representation of themselves that would last a long time. Now it's become very artsy to look as dead as possible. Not that I mind I actually really enjoy some of the more raw emotionless pictures but ey, whatever people feel comfortable with expressing themselves :)
@davidweston9115
@davidweston9115 2 года назад
Well the reasons are different. The reason we don't smile today is because we are all very afraid and angry. The corporations and gov'ts foster this attitude within us to make sure we will always remain good consumers and supplicants. Afraid of war, disease, etc, and needing a strong gov't and very strong corporations to keep us safe, and needing to consume expensive products daily to keep us happy. And most of all, keeping us thinking that we want it this way, that it is some dream come true to give all our time to the corporations (our job) and give all our money to the corporations (our living expenses) and to make sure we have no savings, no retirement, so the banks will get our homes back from us when we die (reverse mortgage takes place of pension). I am not angry about this, rather I feel a wonderful sense of achievement for the powers that be, for setting this up for themselves. They are modern robber barons, and I respect them immensely. Notice also that most photo subjects were dressed in kid's clothing and poorly groomed. No Don Drapers here. Cheers.
@ky1oser
@ky1oser 2 года назад
😭 what you said does make sense, but one of the main reasons people didn’t smile in photos back then was because exposure times used to be a lot longer and so it was easier for them not to. i think why some people don’t smile now is because they either don’t like their smile, or they just want more of an emotionally raw photo of themselves in that moment

yeah its big brain time: exposing a film to light absolutely without actually taking photos will create an eternal video that will start to replay only when it is pitch black the video is at infinity frames per second as it is always exposed that just makes it really epic

I used to use a Toyo 8X10 for commercial work - hundreds of years ago - those bellows can sag a bit - just bout something under them and you can continue to use full movements - try swing and tilt for ultimate bokelicious SDOF portraits and make those F1,9 boys and girls weep with sadness

Small tip about focal lengths on bellows cameras. You can only slightly compare focal lengths with 35mm or 120 film formats at infinity focus. When the bellows is extended the images crops as well and so can a wide angle lens be a telephoto lens (theoretically). However the higher the focal length the more compression you get. Also you need at least double the bellows extension of what focal length you are using to get 1:1 magnification. Great shots!!

Such a cool concept. It's going to be really interesting to see the future of photography (or at least for the next couple of years). And the ways that social distancing/restrictions push creatives to come up with new ways to shoot both commercially & personally.

Photos like Polaroids and old instant photos are so wonderful to find in old scrap books. As great as old prints from negatives and positives are, there's something special about knowing that these pieces of film were in the camera at the time and shot by people I know. And now I've got the same SX-70 my father used to take pictures of his dad. I'd do the same but I'm not as fortunate as he was to still have my father around. Also I dropped it recently and it's broken right now :( but that's my fault.

This was wonderful to see and the evolution of the Polaroid large format film as I was a young intern in the middle 1970s for three summers in the department of electrical engineering at MIT in dark edgerton's famous strobe lab, Polaroid scent of several cases of the new color film to try out doing the famous strobe recreation shots of freezing bullets water drops breaking a balloon the golf swing and so forth, as I remember it the entire color positive and negative matrix were in one enclosed unit .we used a similar 8x10-inch back, more simple Calumet field camera, and then cranked the exposed packet through this small machine waited , for a guesstimated period of time until we got it right and produced some very fine color prints . but the color was just one complete package not several devices that you combined, so kudos to you all this is a great project a very informative video and I enjoyed watching it and congratulations on the great results, and the learning experience

Keegen Moore I used a borrowed Gandolfi 10X8 inch camera many years ago. Sadly, I doubt you could get sheetfilm easily now. I worked in colour, so anyone today would have to self-process C-41 neg or E-6 transparency. Then what would I print onto? Cibachrome is discontinued. I find it really dishonest how photographers fude this issue. I mean, isn't a scanned Polaroid printed by ink jet just a digital photo? Or am I missing something?

There's a few projects where they've converted large format cameras to digital via a scanner. They shoot slow, but, you may be able to capture digitally right off the ground glass with a regular digital camera and a sharp lens. Bonus points if you can find a way to vibrate the ground glass so you don't see the texture. That's a technique they used before full frame video camcorders were commonplace.
