"Shooting Mercury bullets is illegal, but it's okay, because we're outside and I have this tarp here." I got dibs on Cody when the Zombie Apocalypse comes.
@@mrtortoise3766 no shit, sherlock. But that's not the fucking popular one that supposedly houses "aliens* Second.... Why TF are you including that? That's totally fucking irrelevant.
Crazy Russian Hacker is a fucking idiot who told people to use Dry Ice as an air conditioner. Not realizing that Dry Ice is just solid CO2 and absolutely can potentially poison you without proper ventilation.
Cody, hope you get to read this. over 40 years ago we took hollow point bullets and reamed them out with a waggle type of drill bit. We filled them with mercury and capped it with wax so they would fire without effecting our firearms. In our unscientific results we found that we could fell small trees with our mercury loads in a few shots. Never, I repeat never, would go hunting with these loads. Thank you for showing this.
I think it's illegal to *modify a cartridge* to fire a poisonous substance. He's not modifying shit, he's stuffing something down a tube and then firing it. But I'm not a lawyer, nor have I researched this so.. grain of salt.
Your intro always gets me hyped. "Hello everyone welcome back to Cody's lab." Huge wave and then a super awesome smile. Thank you really it makes me happy
Taofladermaus knows the legislation, considering he'd be making various modifications it would jeopardise his channel. There's a time and a place as they say.. :)
It wasn't that long ago that he was nearly unknown... Apparently, if you make gunpowder from your own urine, it gets you subs, lol. But yeah, he's pretty awesome.
Dental amalgams are the worst. I had every amalgam removed from my mouth 20 years ago. At that time they all said I was crazy for worrying about mercury and mercury vapor toxicity. Now many dentists no longer use amalgams, only composite fillings. Great video!
Since the rumors are true, I'll take the chance and say thank you for all the years of free, great and inspiring content! Greetings from Vienna, Austria!
Well, drinking elemental mercury isn't that dangerous. You should drink a mercury salt dissolved in water. This stuff will definitely kill you. Or make you crazy and then kill you.
I think it would be heavy enough that it would cause the planet to turn inside out as the mercury ran to the core. might make a good "XKCD what if" now that I think about it.
+Cody'sLab omg cody!! I love that book and have read it multiple times. I want to be a physicist when I'm older but there aren't many informative books I have access to, do you have any suggestions for things I should read that are pretty scientific?
+Cody'sLab Might be wrong on this but I don't think that should be that case. You're presenting your hypothesis due to the fact that mercury is very dense I would assume. Now to counter that I present the "MERCURY vs SALT - Defies ALL LOGIC" experiment done by the RU-vidr TAOFLEDERMAUS where evidence is shown that mercury although 6.2x more dense than salt doesn't sink to the bottom of a salt glass due to the crystalline property of salt. Ocean beds contain sand which isn't salt but they still share the same crystalline property, due to that I infer that the mercury oceans won't turn inside out. (/watch?v=tA9tqvfWQ7I) But hey what do I know lol, I'm just a kid that needs to get back to doing my homework.
+U N Not all of the ocean floor is covered by sand. But that isn't even the biggest problem here. Sand is largely made of fine particles of seashells and the like. So they do not in fact share a crystalline structure. Sand also moves around a fair bit. I would come to the conclusion that the mercury would eventually filter down due to the irregular nature of the ocean floor. Once started, it would be pretty much impossible to stop. Think geological time scales as well, not human scale.
Oh Cody, never stop uploading :D We love your videos ,the half-science half-fun aspect, the way you teach us, you are a great person! And thanks for posting rather frequently :D
You are the first person, out of many people on youtube, to finally step up to the challenge and shoot mercury out of a gun, despite much pressure from commenters. Bravo.
I find you very inspiring! I love all your videos, that i've seen so far. Now just to go through and make sure i've seen them all! :) Keep up the amazing videos! I'm super impressed by your honest energy, and casual passion for knowing, doing, and learning! Thank you so much!
Cody i just want say thank you so much for all of your great educational videos! My son has been watching your videos for a while now and he is really taking an intrest into geology which is absolutely amazing! You have been such an inspiration to him amd i just wamted to say thanks alot and keep up the good work! P.S. im logged into his account so he may have a suprise haha
especially when he talks about chemical reactions, he does a well enough job of explaining, that I can understand 60% of it but the rest is a complete mystery.
I knew that Gallium affected Aluminium, but I did not realise that Mercury did too, that'a what I love about these videos, I am always learning something new and having a good time learning.
I've tried direct messages to him through youtube, I have had much better success on his facebook page cause very few people comment on stuff or leave posts
This is probably the only popular channel with no hate and it is well deserved. All of your videos are very educational and make chemistry look a lot more intriguing then my chemistry teacher and you genuinely love what you do which gives the audience a good experience. Your channels variety is also awesome. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK CODY!!!!!!!
The molten Metal being able to penetrate deeper is actually a mechanic of some Jacketed armor penetrating rounds. A hard jacket allows primary piercing of armor while a secondary Metal, commonly a lead alloy basically liquefies from friction and "Injects" itself into the cavity resulting in a high velocity and more effective blast stream. The more effective directed penetrating power is sorta similar to shaped charges they use to cut through things like steel beams during demolition. Which by forcing a charge to a narrow stream or "line" makes it's way more useful than just allowing it to blast freely in all directions. So in my opinion something very similar might of happened with your mercury bullet. Very cool video, and thank you.
Cody we love all the stuff you do and don't worry I'm sure none of us care about you doing illegal experiments, I think those a little more dangerous are a tad more fun
true. Cody actually knows what he's doing for all intents and purposes. raofladermaus is alright, but he's mainly a shooting channel and... Idk how to say it without sounding like an a-hole, but Cody is (from what we can see) just a better human. he knows what he's doing chemically, understands his environment both geologically and ecologically (mining/extractions/and works on his ranch) is also family oriented and has mechanical skills, therefore contributing to the betterment of society while making yt videos.. this dude is a busy motherfucker no other way to put it lol from a past of working on a North Dakota ranch, the responsibility is no joke lol, taking care of animals, if your equipment breaks down or if you don't wake up early as fuck it could cost you your life and livelihood riding horseback on an open range is one of the coolest things in the world though
I sure can tell this guy is an old soul. Brings to mind those Golden age American, old fellas. The 80 something year olds from when i was a kid that were so intelligent and crafty they shaped the country
Possibly your best video ever. Certainly up there with sending the disc into outer space (ish). Love it. You will be a credit to your parents and to the USA when you're chosen to go to Mars. I for one really appreciate all of the time and energy you and your fiance put into these videos - thank you.
Wow, at first, for that first shot, I was thinking... "fail" because of the mercury rain. But man that was trippy. It totally worked in this situation. Nice job.
One poisonous bullet can be shot discreetly and silently and kill a man. Remember that a gun doesn't even have to use an explosive to get enough force to cause a bullet to penetrate, assuming close proximity you could shoot a poisonous bullet using a spring gun. It's quite harder to get away with murder when you're using flamethrowers and HMGs.
I was thinking about real heavy MG like the ones that can damage a tank or take down some aircrafts. I get the assassination thing though, that's actually a good reason. But just sayin : if you kill a man that's already illegal so this law is not gonna stop you from doing it. It might get you arested if found in possetion of such bullets though, so...yeah.
+Maokai Hecarim If you think a law is going to stop people from using mercury bullets to kill people, you're wrong. That's like having a law against wearing a bulletproof vest while doing something illegal (that law actually exists... )
Well considering the fact that one bullet will more then likely cost more then the gun you are shooting I dont think it will work out that well for hunting. A silver bullet would be 100x cheaper.
Been here since under 100k subs, its been so cool to see you grow, put out new series, and even be on tv!(outrageous acts of science, freaked out when I saw you). You should make a series on air cannons, vacuum cannons etc. which ones work the best, how to make them, etc.
How about trying an exploding bullet like in the Day of the Jackel. Hollow out the bullet insert the mercury liquid and seal the tip. I wonder if that can be done real time or was it just a hollywood thing.
You said that the mercury bullet had more momentum because of its greater weight, but this just means that it would require more energy to get to the same speed as the lighter lead bullet. Both bullets would have the same momentum assuming that the energy transfer from the powder explosion is that same for both, the mercury bullet being heavy would travel at a slower speed. Good video though, keep up the good work!
Higher density projectile results in a higher pressure in the chamber during firing, allowing more energy to be imparted into the projectile, resulting in more momentum and less energy waste.
+Darkatar Thanks for the insight, it didn't occur to me. For the momentum to be the same, the barrel would have to be infinitely long, as well as friction to be the same.
I do not believe that the mercury lubricated it's path through the gel. in my opinion the weight difference would have given the mercury more velocity v the lead.
I think it's a mechanism more similar to Armor Piercing rounds. What I mean by that is this: In an Armor Piercing round, the copper jacket is stripped off of the steel core of the round, creating a smaller (and therefore a higher velocity) projectile. If the Mercury was melting as you say, then it wasn't so much 'lubricating' itself as it was shedding mass to retain speed...which as you noted increases penetrating power, but would be useless in transferring energy to a target effectively.
that's what I thought too. plus I'm assuming all those pieces of stuff falling down are bits of Mercury that were splattered against the gel in the firing
Shedding of mass to retain higher velocities seems to be the most acceptable explanation I have heard yet, but something like this is not researched, so all we have are hypotheses.
After watching your videos I really think you are one of those people that make great discoveries in science. I'd say you should be in a lab somewhere doing experiments and making break throughs, but you seem to be quite in your element ;) love your channel.
It's cool watching some of Codys videos because I live around the same area as him. Like his video where he collected platinum from the side of the road, he was explaining where he came up with this and why this idea is plausible and he drove North under Antelope drive. It's cool to see an area I live in get viewed on RU-vid by a very intelligent individual. Keep up the good work Cody, looking forward to your next video! By the way, I live in Layton, coincidentally also going to school to become a geologist.
I recently found your channel and immediately subscribed then watched about half your videos in one day. I really love what you do. I remember being around 8 or 9 and daydreaming about machines that could sort grains of sand in their various components and wondered how much gold and other precious metals was hiding on a whole beach ( probably a lot less than I thought at the time and nothing compared to the items people lose on the beach) that's why I'd have to say finding platinum in highway dust was one of my favorites and in a sense your channel is somewhat of a dream come true. I appreciated the lead oxide glaze on the cupola in one of your precious metal refining videos too. Having done a lot of pottery some years back I love all kinds of glazes. If you're out of ideas you have an ideal oven and materials to make glazes from scratch and bake them in your oven to see the different results. Maybe also simple stuff for beginners like home made silver polish? Or how about trying to create various types of chemical batteries? Anyway , looking forward to more videos.Thank you and keep up the good work!
I love watching your videos soo much! Im only a junior and I've really been want to be a geologist and you've inspired me in so many ways!! Thank you so much. your amazing!
tuber didn't anyone ever tell you that you almost all of the United States oil comes from the Middle East and is imported? Fracking hardly affects drinking water. And if you remember from grade school, oil is thicker than water. It can easily be separated with a filter. In my opinion, oil companies should be fracking Canada and Texas because the majority of funding that terrorist groups get comes from the purchase of imported oil. Would you rather have terrorist attacks or would you rather have water that can easily be filtered and boiled at a water treatment plant (which already happens) before it even reaches your home's water pipes?
