Shooting With A Translucent Umbrella

We received a comment from a subscriber requested Peter to shoot with a translucent umbrella and either 50mm or 80mm lens. As Peter hadn't shot with a translucent umbrella in over 15 years, he thought he would give it a go and show you guys the results! This is something Peter is very strong on, just trying things that you're not sure about, it is the best way to learn about lighting techniques.

An inexpensive umbrella can really light a reasonable space using only a Speedlight. But, Peter’s posing and editing skills add a huge increment to the result. Lovely model, hope to see her again. She clearly is comfortable with Peter and dazzles with that smile.

After playing around with lots of fancy/expensive modifiers I have returned to shooting almost exclusively with umbrellas (both translucent and silver- with optional diffusion 'sock' as well - both large for softer and smaller for edgier more contrasty light). Inexpensive/fast/flexible - and used properly they give a TON of lighting options. (They just don't make a lot of $$$ for the manufacturers so they aren't 'pushed' in marketing). I also think there is a mystique about a photographer bringing a $3K focusing Para that impresses clients and makes others think that they need those expensive toys to create great images!!! I actually usually have a 7 foot translucent umbrella on wheels during my shoots to use as my quick fill for wherever it is needed- easier than playing with moving V-flats- and much more controllable...

I have a lot of respect for Peter Coulson due to his artistic taste, his candidness, and the care that he demonstrates for his models. There was something in this video that raised a concern, though. His comment at 8:34 seems to imply that he makes substantial digital alterations to his photos. I have no objection to him modifying the lighting, but adding or removing objects crosses an important line for me. I know that not everyone sees things this way. (Heck, Google's new phone was advertised primarily on its ability to remove objects.) However, I think the notion that photographs contain all of the that were there is an extremely useful assumption to be able to make, and so there should be a strong social more against violating it.

Hi Peter , this was a surprise as I didn't think the translucent would provide sufficient light. You made it work and produced beautiful images. Love how you communicate with the models, and taking good pictures, 'if you believe it, you do it'. Question, is it always required to have the model sign a model release? The only real difference between a shoot-through brolly and a soft box or the like is that there is light reflected backwards and there is less control over light spilling all over the place. For the unwary, this can soften the image due to the unwanted light so make sure you use a good lens hood! A shoot-through brolly is less directional as light fills the room more than a soft box. So a soft box is more directional and controllable (particularly if you use a grid) whilst a shoot-through is less so. You should also consider that shoot-through methods, generally, will have a hotspot centrally whilst a soft box has dispersed lighting - typically because the light usually points backwards and is reflected back evenly in a soft box. If your soft box has the light pointing at the subject, then really you have the same hot-spot issue so make sure your light is diffused additionally in the soft box. After this the only other factor to think of is if you like the shape of the reflections in the eyes of your model or whatever you are photographing. But in all honesty, this video has nothing to do with the lighting rig other than a minor mention of it at the start. It is really just an excuse to bait-click the unwary. That said, there is lots to learn in the simplicity of the set-up... just a shame that the lorded Peter C didn't really make explain this and certainly didn't make the most of the beautiful model's obvious ability! Well done model but hardly the greatest PC photos I have seen... in all senses of the meaning of the latter!

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Hardly matey boy... after 40 years as a professional photographer I find this sort of thing simply quite sad. Sadder even is your reaction... but everyone to their own. If you want the truth I only watched the entirety of your video because a student of mine asked me to. You enticed people in to talk about using a shoot-through brolly but actually never even came close to explaining the subtleties of it. Instead you took a load of mediocre images, didn't get the best out of your model, patronised her to hell and tried to suggest that the images you did take were really good and a whole load of other codswallop. I am sure that you are quite successful in your endeavours but if that is supposed to be how to take great photos of a very beautiful young lady with masses of potential... gord 'elp us all! Good luck though and I trust that you have a happy life.
