This video is the second video around Shop Organization focused on Tool Storage and how I have chosen to store my tools in a small shop. My goal is to help you think outside the box to make the most of your space, especially if you are in a small shop.

@@neilphillips3193 Same here. Had already created a few holders but now am rethinking that
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 3 года назад
Most I had seen had always been individual, and granted it’s easier to move individual holders around than that massive thing, but the point is to rearrange individual tools, not holders. So this allows a lot of that. One piece of advice, use your miter saw to cut the grooves, not table saw. Too long of a board to use miter gauge, most miter saws have a depth stop. Made it really simple.

Thank you for making this tutorial/tour. I am a new widow. I sat down and cried the day I realized I didn't know where any of the wrenches were when I needed one right away. Now, I'm on a mission to get the tools organized. The French cleat idea will make a handy storage solution in the mechanical closet where we have much underutilized wall space.

@@RingsWorkshop Could you do a tutorial video on how you actually designed and assembled some of the components for hand tool storage (starting at the 11 minute mark in this video)? On some, once the cleat is cut, you attached boards on top. And what is the spacing between your cleats? How did you know which tool holders would need to hit two cleats? I have everything purchased, but my cleats are not cut yet.
@farmyourbackyard2023
@farmyourbackyard2023 Год назад
It appears you have a 6 inch board on top of the 5 inch cleat. Then you added the magnets. How are the boards attached to the cleat boards? What is the purpose of having second boards attached on the front (drill bits and hole saw holders).

This brings back some memories! I ran my furniture making business out of a one car garage back in the late 80's and 90's. I had stuff mounted everywhere! I had a panel saw that took up an entire wall, and even had pegboard behind that! I built some massive furniture in there, but it was definitely a dance 😉The very first iteration was an unheated 2-car that I had to share with a car so I feel your pain. Everything on wheels and stowed away when not needed! I and finally getting my dream shop now, but it's been many years!

I love pegboard. Love it. Much smaller location unit, and fully flexible in two dimensions. You get more in a smaller space, so they are closed. Hand tools only! - but you can group by use, not size. For bigger stuff, you need ply (or OSB) walls. Putting a couple of screws in is fast, and you save all the time making cleats. Moving is simple, and you can locate them more accurately (not limited by cleat spacing). Totally agree with cubbies (moving divider shelves). Also consider duplication- I keep three sets of most popular drill sizes, one by the lathe, one by the drill press, and one by the hand drills. Saves a lot of walking and takes very little space.

I'm busy setting up my small shop at home, in a small space in South Africa, initially as a hobbyist 'after hours' space where I can indulge in my passion, but the hope as I think many of us have is to permanently do what I love whether its woodworking, metalworking etc etc but working with our hands, stimulating our brains and doing something that gives us peace and joy! Your series of videos are by far the most helpful and structured that I've come across, and you offer great advice (through trial and error I'm sure 😂). Thanks for sharing your expertise some of your ideas in your Shop Organization vids have resulted in that 'the coin just dropped' moment for me and been a huge help! Also what you've learnt doesnt work is a huge help, crosses out all the Don'ts and explains the Do's so that I don't have to go through that, keep that up man! And magnets...I'm getting some asap

Outstanding comment !!! I'm in the process of doing something very similar, in central California. I love practical information and a practical approach to organizing and streamlining a work space, most commonly a garage. I love good ideas and what I call "actionable intelligence." What I mean by this, is that sometimes people make suggestions that are far too laborious, time consuming and EXPENSIVE !!! Actionable ideas are things that one can actually do in THIS lifetime, that really work, and that DON'T require a second mortgage to finance. Kudos to you and the author of this video !!!

You're small RU-vid now but man you have great ideas and such sound logical choices. You'll blow up, if that's what you want, just keep it up. I remember seeing your workbench in a magazine years ago and writing them for plans because the design was so genius. The only thing you don't have going for you is being smoking hot like AW.

Hahaha thanks a lot, I really appreciate that. I’ll have to work on the good looks thing. Hopefully grey hair, big ears and big nose comes back into style sometime soon. That also reminded me I forgot to tag AW in the details! Good looking out.

@@RingsWorkshop Her short shorts seem to really help in the videos I’ve seen, though doubt that would boost your channel if you were to incorporate that wardrobe choice. Maybe if your core viewers where from San Fran. Enjoyed the videos and humor. Thanks for taking the time.

Definitely don't go the short-shorts route. Humor is solid...that'll keep your clicks up.

The best part of this whole series is the thought process. Thank you for that. One other comment is your dust collection system. You are taking expensively warmed-up air and exhausting it outside creating negative air pressure in the shop which is then equalized by cold outside air. I was actually shocked when I had my dust collection system in an unheated part of the building.

Thank you for the kind words. The DC I haven’t had an issue with, as mine turns on and off with the tools. So only time it is running for long periods of time is when I am making repeat cuts on the table saw or sanding. If you did that a lot more frequently I could see it becoming a bigger issue, especially in dead of winter or hot summer.

Never thought to use magnetic strips! I can always make something pretty later on if I get bored..but in my new space, I need to get stuff up and off the tables and floor! Shops can quickly turn into a mess if there's not a place for things

ive done the magnet thing , but i found the magnetism was creating issues when working, some tools would hold onto tiny screws or any ferrous scraps. Otherwise is great.

Haven’t had any issues myself, but I don’t do a ton of work with metal (outside of fasteners), primarily wood or plastic. I can imagine it being an issue if you have metal shavings anywhere in the shop though.
