In just 4 years Tonic Studios in Columbus, OH has gone from a 2-person operation in a basement to an 11-person team that's rapidly outgrowing their current 5,500 square foot space. Now they have a truly stunning screen printing business. We visit Tasha and Andrew at their fast-growing shop that's driven by putting customers and employees first.
Check out Tonic Studios: www.tonicstudi...
Learn more about their growth here: www.printavo.c...
"Custom t-shirts with over-the-top service" is their moniker - and it's obvious that Tonic Studios have fulfilled that mission for hundreds of customers. The majority of their sales come through word of mouth, Instagram, and their deep connection to the Columbus community. "We don't advertise anything! We don't even contact people. It's very weird how much work just comes to us that we spend zero effort obtaining. It just walks in the door!"
By nailing two distinct niches - boutique-quality custom merchandise for local food & alcohol businesses and printing affordable custom products for local nonprofits - Tonic Studios have planted themselves firmly in their community.
Their values don't stop at treating their customers well. They're also big believers in their staff. “We're lucky. Our staff works so hard for us. We are not absent owners. [...] It’s our responsibility to foster a sense of ownership and accountability.” They've even just started a profit sharing program with their employees, so they’re distributing a percentage of their profits quarterly - directly to their employees.
Tonic also uses a screen printing pricing model that's based on print cost. They don't markup their garments at all - instead, they roll all of their overhead and additional costs into a single printing fee. This has actually let them compete with other shops because they can clearly show what they're charging - without involving an arbitrary markup on the t-shirts and garments they sell.
A huge thanks to Tonic Studios and the entire team for taking time to let us visit. This is a great look inside a blossoming custom apparel and screen printing business - Bruce asks about pricing, hiring, growth, and much more in this insightful and candid tour.

I have been binge watching all the shop tours since finding your web site. A couple things stand out from the print shop owners perspective and What it takes to be successful, and be sustainable. Very few of them talked about profit. To a person, they have shown a passion for what they are doing. They also find it VERY important that they find staff that share that same passion. Second they all try to find some way to share and give back. Whether that is with staff, community, social programs. environment etc. It is almost like Printing T-shirts isn't the goal, it is a means to be a force within the community, the world even and they accept and embrace the fact that change is squarely on them. They take ownership, and great pride to be part of something that they may not fully understand today, but are willing to work through things to see what comes out on the other end. I am just amazed how hard these young people work to move it down the road. It is a new paradigm. Good form!

one thing i see in most shops is the setup time being the bottle neck use them job carts get all the shirts inks screens.and such ready for the next 3 orders put them on the job carts. wile one oder is being done the next order is on the job cart. this equils to less setup time.

@10:03 Is it really a badge of honor that they don't mark up garments if they just make it up in the print cost?

I was thinking the same thing. I’m in San Diego and it would be over $10k per month for a building that size here!

Yeah the story was good. Maybe should start doing more tour like b-roll over them telling them story. That would be both inspirational and insightful to see their layouts.

The knowledge he was spilling was way better then a tour of the shop he himself said wasn't laid out how they wanted it. I've seen so many shops, so I'll take the knowledge 1st every time! But shops are def cool to see too :)
