You are correct about the fly being created by Craig Matthews of Blue Ribbon. This is a great tailwater pattern. I've had some great March days on the Missouri River with this pattern. Effective and easy to tie.

I love how you explain every little detail. your tutorials are wonderful for novice tyers and advanced tyers such as myself. It seems like every video I watch I learn some new technique. keep up the great work and thanks for all the effort you put into your videos

I was thinking of using a size 16 jig hook with either a copper bead or a hot pink/ orange bead, also do you use this in the winter time in NJ?

Have you tied this in other colors? Olive, black or red? Does it cease to be a Shop Vac if I do?

I tie these all the time! Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I have some videos up on my channel of me fishing them here in New Mexico.

I am debating between getting a regal medallion pedestal or the regal travel vise, which in your opinion do you think is better?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 8 лет назад
+Clay Sommerfelt I'd say definitely go with the Medallion pedestal for all around tying. The Travel vise is perfect for the road but the base is a bit small (footprint) and light for daily use particularly with larger patterns.

Could you simply wrap down the pheasant feather fibers and then wrap up the wire? This way they would counter wrap each other (wooly bugger style) and you could keep the thread near the bead. I know it's just a fuss... but I am always prone to cut down tying steps. I really like your channel. Keep up the good work. Have a nice 2016 ;)

+Marcelo Jost If I understand your question correctly, the answer is yes you can and it is a great technique. Matt Grobert does it on our Pumpkin Head Midge video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iU3c1mi8Dy4.html. It does mean that you are snipping off the excess pheasant tail fibers at the back end of the fly which some people don't seem to like, but I am fine with. Happy New Year to you too.
@MarceloJost
@MarceloJost 8 лет назад
+tightlinevideo Yep, except you don't mind the tail fibers here in the Shop Vac and the tying thread never goes all the way to the hook bend tying down the pheasant fibers. As I said, just a fuss :)
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 8 лет назад
+Marcelo Jost Now the question is, on the Shop Vac, with your tying method, would you tie in the pheasant tail fibers behind the bead by their tips? Or by the butts? To me, the taper would look better if tied in by the butts so the tips are at the rear of the fly, but don't know how easy it would be wrap with the tip ends.
@MarceloJost
@MarceloJost 8 лет назад
+tightlinevideo I would pick fairly long pheasant fibers and, like you, tie them by their butts, but wouldn't cut the tips before tying. In a small fly like this I think this should be enough to provide some fiber length to grip until it's time to secure them with the copper wire at the rear.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 8 лет назад
+Marcelo Jost I just tried a few Shop Vacs tying in at the bead and wrapping rearward. Interesting, very little difference in terms of final body profile whether I tied the fibers in by the tips or the butts. But, what I didn't like was even with long fibers, they are getting shorter and shorter as you wrap rearward and negotiating them around gets more difficult as you get down into the hook gap and close to the vice jaws. I think I'll stick with the method shown in this video. I know it's a cardinal sin, but when I'm tying these or similar flies for myself, I don't counter wrap the wire. This saves a step or two and I've found no profound difference in terms of durability overall look.

What kind of regal vise do you use?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 8 лет назад
+Clay Sommerfelt I have two Regals at the moment. My primary vise is a Regal Revolution with stainless steel jaws and a platform base. The other is their new Travel Vise with midge jaws which is much smaller and lighter. Both work flawlessly.
