In this video I make a hand tap machine. Its basically a jig that allows you to tap a hole very accurately and repeatably. I'm very happy on how well it works, and fast!! it didn't take long to build or cost a lot.
thanks
Ryan

Nifty way to center/square up the rod in the drill press to drill the hole in the end. All in all very nice purpose built fixture, it should speed up the process nicely.

Great jig. I give you props for having the guts to market your own product, I like you am a Millwright as well as a Machinist and have had numerous jig made over the years that somebody else had a similar idea and marketed it and made the money from it because i didn't have the guts to do it myself . One bit of advice when ever you are going to tap a hole in alum use a coarse tap the threads hold up better over time .
@Shopbuilt

+Brian mcd thanks:) I went with fine becuase it's for a adjustable cursor. The fine threads allow for a "finer tuning"

I really like this. This isn't a criticism of your device but I was thinking, since you are using a cordless drill anyway, a portable drill press (the type you mount your drill in the jig) might be a really good option too. You could always modify the base for the stops and hold down clamp. Your device is great, just throwing that out there because I think it is a good option that I hadn't really thought of until I watched this video.

@dschlic1able

There is an attachment that fits on a drill press that makes tapping extremely simple. Press down on the handle the tap turns in the forward direction, lift up on the handle the tap reverses and the tap unscrews from the work piece.

You didn't spend nearly enough time talking about how you aligned the rod to drill the end of it: chucked in a bit of rod, then aligned it with the bushing. Clever thinkin'.
@Shopbuilt
@Shopbuilt 7 лет назад
I didn't think of this at first either. I failed at getting it centred three times before I finally thought of the bushing, worked perfect!!
@MrUltralove
@MrUltralove 7 лет назад
the rod could be supported by couple of linear bearings instead of bushings to reduce deformation by the friction, useful product tho!

If you can find or have an old cordless drill, take it apart and mount it and setup some forward and reverse push buttons. I saw James Bruton of Xrobots use this technique on his walking bot legs. still has the keyless chuck on them but more importantly, at least on his, it has a DC motor and planetary gear to provide enough torque. #morepower :-)

You just used your tools, to make a tool, to help you make tools to sell... I guess now you're a toolmaker. Congratulations on getting to the next level! Oh, and that talk about not having a lathe, fix than ASAP. Before that, get a preper tap wrench, a flexible MIG gun, some machine taps and some c-clamps.

You can make another shaft or adaptor so you can center punch your part. It will make the hole on the press drill and on the tap machine at the same location.

Sweet jig, if the drill press runs slow enough can you use the drill press instead of the drill. Doing 100 at a time it may save on fatigue.

Very nice. I don't have a welder, so I was wondering to what extent you could get away with normal woodworking tools (table saw/band saw, etc.) and a few taps to make holes for screws to join pieces of aluminum together to make jigs like this?
@Shopbuilt
@Shopbuilt 7 лет назад
i avoided using anything other than woodworking tools right up until the handle., I think you could come up with something fairly easily to avoid the welder. Just a hole through the rod and a long bolt would be good:)

Nice work! What if you add a hexagon bit (screwdriver bit) to end of the tap ? With this way you will have very fast cordless drill connection to tap. Versus now you have to tight and lose manually your drill between every hole. This may speed up the process a lot especially if you have a lot of pieces to work with.

Nice job sir! DId you consider using a small pneumatic ram to keep the parts in place? Should make it more convenient with the number of parts you plan to make. This instead of the screw lock. Have fun making parts!

If I've seen correctly the arm is connected to the base with only one screw. Wouldn't it rotate and mess up alignment? How about 2 screws?

It's a great idea but like myself Everything that I've taped would not fit in that. Definitely a great idea for a production line type of thing were you would need to tape a bunch of holes in a row.
@Shopbuilt
@Shopbuilt 7 лет назад
+Franks DIY it would be pretty easy to make a different arbor for each size. This is just mini though so probably 1/4" would be the largest but you certainly scale it up if you wanted to.

What? You do have a lathe, I watched you build a very nice one. Or did you give it away? What do you do if the work piece doesn't fit your little fixture?
@Shopbuilt
@Shopbuilt 7 лет назад
+William Bidel this jig is very specific to the flipstops but you could just have a larger flat base with multiple holes to make it more universal if you want. I'm not set up to put a drill chuck in the tailstock, that's why I can't use my homemade lathe.

dude buy some machine taps. then you can use your drill press (at a slow speed) edit. i now see you are using a drill and i realized why you cant use the drill press... no reverse.. although you should still get machine taps if you havent already, they are made for power tapping (they push the chips forward or back and away like a drill bit so they dont clog the tap
