Shoplifting crisis at NYC drugstores

The NYPD says shoplifting in the city is at its highest levels and that thieves are targeting a lot of drugstores in particular. Rite Aid recently closed a location in Manhattan after more than $200,000 in product was stolen over two months.

Nowadays street homeless and are fentanyl addicts, and not capable of doing anything no matter how simple it is. Street encampments are open air drugs markets brewing all sorts of crime. Majority of them will die from fentanyl overdose, or drugs related violence. Second hand fentanyl smoke can easily kill you in no time. Street homeless gradually destroy everything around themselves. We will never reduce street homelessness without reducing the amount of fentanyl drug available on our streets. If they can afford, they smoke fentanyl up to 100 times a day. That's how all these fires are started. Homeless advocates are mentally stuck in Pathological Altruism, and all they do is enabling fentanyl addicts remain as close as possible to their fentanyl sources.

My cousin has a bunch of stores in Staten Island. He collects bottles (soda, beer, detergent, shampoo) from the recycling depot and fills them with water. Then he marks them and put them on the shelves. The staff know to look for the marks and replace them with the real one if the customer tries to buy it. If the marked (phony) bottle gets shoplifted, they've just saved a pile. Last week, someone shoplifted 50 boxes of conditioner that contained sand and cigarette butts, 100 Revlon nail polishes that were priced at $30 and contained tempera paint, and boxes of Hershey bars that were full of old lottery tickets. Now he has a cash box under the counter fitted with a GPS, and filled with $1 bills. In the event of an armed robbery, he'll just hand that over.

I was at Duane Reade today in Queens and some woman walked in and walked out with a handful of goodies like it was nothing. At least $100 worth of goodies. Even the store workers were unfazed and didn't care. She just walked out with items like she owned the franchise.

It's not only drug stores I work for a major office supply chain in midtown . we get shoplifters everyday . they walk out with chairs , printers , laptop computers , packaging tape , water , paper towels to name a few !! its just out of control . Last year alone the store had $37000 worth of merchandise stolen .

Hmmm....I'm guessing this is either STAPLES, or OFFICE DEPOT. Either way, there are no consequences. Ex: a nearly unstable classroom of students will behave badly, when there's a substitute teacher. A cohesive classroom culture....will have well-behaved students---regardless their supervisor. New York City is culturally incoherent....and legally unsupervised.

I guess there is no such things as morals anymore….I remember when I was 12 and took a piece of candy from a display and popped it in my mouth and my mother saw me and told me that was stealing and I needed to speak to the store manager and apologize….I thought for sure I was going to go to jail….but as upset as I got it all was fine….but from then on stealing has never been my thing….😮

This was an issue when I worked at Walgreens. You'd think working there was easy. No! I've never seen the things I've seen in any of my years of work until I worked there. Cops constantly, fist fights etc addicts, scammers. the insanity literally consumed my life. The only thing that didn't happen honestly was we were never help up, thank god 🙏 I was blessed the day is stopped working there, no lie

In brazil we are given a ticket, a key or the likes of it and whenever we enter a store, we do so in lines, through a small half-wall hall that goes through security and the cashiers, which are all usually next to each other (and next to the security, that is next to the exit) inside, we shop freely, and then do lines again to 1) pay for the items, 2) give the key or ticket back and 3) leave as clean as we came in. Guess why we have to do all this and guess who were the ones robbing

There were two Rite Aid stores in the Portland OR area which have closed. One went under about six or seven yrs ago. The second was more recent located downtown, closed it's doors five months ago. Their shelves had become almost bare over the last two years. Pandemic and supply chain issues. Not sure what lead to the closure, likely loss of sales and increased thefts.

I was in Rite Aid this summer and there was a white man stealing products from locked case and put everything in his backpack. There was an African security guard who was asking him"what do you think you're doing"? The guy just kept stuffing his bag while everyone was watching and he ran out the store. The security guard didn't even apprehend him.

They close down the Walgreens I miss shopping at in my neighborhood for the same reasons and I was very upset. When I found out out other stores was buying stolen goods in my neighborhood I yell at them and I told them you are promoting the distraction of businesses that can thrive in our neighborhood and fueling criminal enterprise that attract bad people in this area

I used to be a killah in reducing shrink for stores like Marshall’s and macys to name a few….. was one of the best in my district…..but times has changed and people are more violent…. My last case before I hung it up with loss prevention got out of control with the younger folks working wanting to pump their muscles and hgh against others with muscles on hgh…..I had enough when fools casually walked in and tried to walk out with cash registers during business hours, it’s a mess

Its really all the difference in how its handled, the laws for shoplifting in the US are weird, and lot of them are Jim Crow era, meant to incarcerate minorities on suspicion, not actually arrest criminals. Notice the tone in the presenter's voices, like omg my fragility, what a world, when you would be hard pressed to find anyone that cared in most of the rest of the world.

Make these store window walk up request only. No more entry! Similar to a drive through arrangement. No punishment for thieves that’s ridiculous. Catch, cut off thumbs and release. That’s the way it was in olden days. Make punishment fit the crime. Rapists get the snip snip. You can’t blame the shops for closing up with brazen bold thieves loading up and walking out.

They sell them on the street. Some neighborhoods have homeless bazaars going on, where they sell either food that they receive free from food pantries, and/or churches, and/or community centers. And/or they sell what they steal from stores, on the street.

They never cover the loss enough for the business to recover. Happened to me twice during the 1990s. Got reimbursed in a couple of installments for about 2/3s of the hit, and was never able to fully restock and after the second time the operation could not make a comeback, had to close a few years later after running out of resources by attrition. You have to hire a lawyer and a public adjuster 'dream team' to fight the big guys if you can afford them

Security guards will just stand there and watch you being assaulted and mugged. They won't even call the police to help you. As long as they're not involved. That's the problem with New Yorkers, they don't want to involve themselves in anything. Then, they have the audacity to move toward other states and conduct themselves with that same behavior, and demanding that somebody build a subway for them to travel on. I live in Florida, do you know how many times I've heard, from New Yorkers, that they need a Subway in Florida? My God! Why don't you New Yorkers just stay in what you created over there.

i've been in ny once...i was amazed because there was a securtiy gard at every store. not alowed to take in your bag. after shopping you could get ik back. WHAT T.F. HAPPEND? pick up one of the homeless people and sit them down on an chair near the entrance...protect your customer and yourself!!

It always has been illegal. The problem is, you have some people with peculiar ideas, and some people who never, ever have called the situation correctly in their lives. Those are the ones that are presently running our local, state, and federal government. And they belong to one certain party, with very peculiar ideas. Yet, those same politicians managed to become Millionaires and billionaires off of the backs of the poor and the working people.
