Shore fishing for Bass and Flounder is a British winter tradition. Finding some sheltered shore fishing in winter can really keep the love for angling alive during the dark and rainy months. Here I fish a new shore mark in an estuary targeting Flounder and Bass. I explain the rigs and baits I use and show how to unhook a deep hooked flatfish.

Your ability to drop onto fish, no matter the venue, occasion, time, etc, just shows the knowledge and skill you have. We are down to St. Ives in 3 weeks time, but with a couple of days at Brean, in Somerset, either side of the two weeks we're in Cornwall, it breaks up the journey, extends the holiday, and costs very little as my parents own a static caravan there. Think I'll toddle along to Burnham on Sea and have a go at the estuary there, using, of course, everything I learned from you, John! Thanks, mate! 😁

I've lived less than 200 yards from the beach for over 50 years and have been missing what's down there. You've an impressive knowledge and I admire your desire to only take what you need. I am so envious in the best of ways of where you live my grandad lives just outside port Issac and since I was born I’ve been going down to Cornwall I’m now 33 . It’s got a special feel about it one of the biggest gems the uk has to offer. I’ve had some stonking bass down there with a good beach bbq. Be proud of where you live I know you are buddy all the best and right lines lad

Great video mate....great location....and bird sounds esp the curlew......I use rolling leads with blunt flat ends.. it kicks up large amounts of sand....I find when you give a couple of winds on the reel fishing for plaice I usually get an instant take

I know that you filmed it in December but a new Fish Locker video was a great way to start the year, thanks for letting us share your session. I've mentioned it before but way back, 60+ years ago, before there was a size limit on them we always kept those 12-14 inch ( pan size) bass to eat, anything bigger was put back, the opposite to what happens nowadays. By the way big flounders were also kept for the table. Looking forward to the next installment.

Another fantastic video to start the new year, packed with hints and tips a lovely unhooking method for the smaller flat fish (you should market it) far better than cutting the line and leaving the hook in the fish which sadly I did once. Most enjoyable watch Thanks very much, I’m with you on these short days more sunlight needed - roll on spring and summer . The tactics that land you a flounder are similar to what works a few hundred miles to your east too , Low tide and rolling leads great for flounder. Some timely reminders for us all regarding the pale 😀 and that unhooking method has saved a few fish must remember that for the flatfish. 👍 nice fat fantastic flounder

Happy holidays John and Fishlocker family. I’m from the east coast of the United States and as you are one of the two British folk I follow, I had to share this with you. Yesterday, my 6 yr.old grandson said to me,” Tom Holland (Spider-Man) is British and he doesn’t like Twinkies. He said “ I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just his tastebuds. That was some flounder John . I think you are right about the seals we have same problem in the Thames on a bad day you could get 10to 15 on a tide a good day a 100 no seals. We have hundreds on 1 bank there's 2000 plus in Estuary. If we get 5 or 6 now that's good but we get more school bass . It's also the same with dabs and plaice.. Nice to see some shore trips.

Something needs to be done about the seals. We either need to remove some or just let the sick ones die - stop feeding up the starving ones. They're starving because there are too many.

Good video tip for unhooking the flounder don’t cut the line turn the hook point away from mouth and back through gills job done

Sometimes its easier to take it straight out of the gill and cut it off. If the hook is hooked into the top side of the fish I agree. Turn it then disgorge it through the mouth.

That was a cracking flounder John especially by today standards. Estuaries are underrated. Shore fishing has declined over last 10 years and is often hit or miss. Light fishing in estuaries can give great sport with schoolies ,flounders and mullet all giving a good scrap on light tackle...as always great video. Happy New Year to you and your family.

Plaice are usually alot more rounded and have a boney ridge on their head, flounders have a rough/boney ridge down their lateral line, also, worth mentioning that dabs have a rounded/D shape on their lateral line and have rough skin when rubbed from tail to head

Completely agree on the Wessex Rig. It's my go to scratching rig and I use a quick link at the bottom to swap out traces and vary the hook sizes depending on what's about.

When you say 'just keep an eye on the rods for me' John...that's what I do anyway. I kinda get transfixed by the rod tip, waiting for the twitch. Great relaxer after a stressful week at work, or an enforced lockdown. I stayed in Weymouth for a couple of weeks a few years back, and got around a few marks just to observe the methods used by local fishermen, picking up some great tips along the way. And yes, the Curlew call is a bit haunting when you hear it just after dawn, it's great to hear. Not long now to sit on a pier with a freshly barbequed Mackerel once again, can't wait. :)

Brilliant mate absolutely brilliant!!! I love them sort of fishing marks. I had a really nice flounder Thursday just gone but think yours was slightly bigger then mine 😉🤣🤣 I love watching the bits on the top of the rod had a smile on my face the hole time watching mate. Great video John and a really nice shore session. Lovely sized flounder too. Jim would have liked that one! 🍳🍳 Interesting to note that you've linked to your Ian Golds tripod rest - apparently Daiwa UK have taken over the Ian Golds name and the quality has slipped way downhill. That little bay is beautiful, I live here in Southern Alberta Canada and there isn't anything like this. I think only 2.5% of the province is covered in water, still some trophy lakes but mostly niche river fishing. This bay slightly reminds me of the bays in the Long Beach district on Vancouver Island where I went surfing. I loved trying to forage on those tidal pools, they are very interesting especially when they are basaltic old lava flows. The critters love them. Best of luck in 2022, I will be watching & learning sir.

Awesome stuff thank you for the how-tos. Now the carp lake my old man and I used to frequent is shut for the winter I'm gonna have to scratch the itch to do some saltwater fishing in my hometown. Happy New Year John all the best mate
