This is perfect! I live in a trailer park that started as a vacation trailer park but now we are all permanent residents with our homes wired to the mains - but the shore power outlets for travel trailers are still here. I want to wire my shed with a 2-breaker system on a shore power inlet and this is the first video I've found that shows me not just the shore power inlet installation, but also the breaker panel and outlet wiring. Wahoo!!!

@10:30 Outlets and switches are designed such, that the ground lug and common/neutral (white) lug is on the same side of the plug or switch. So if you have bad lighting, the black wire goes opposite the side the ground is located. I never even pay attn to the screw color. Only where the ground lug is located.

There is another problem with using a 20 amp breaker with a 15 amp receptacle--the recep can overload but the 20 amp breaker won't trip, resulting in overheating and eventual fire. Receps need to match breaker sizing.

Great info and I like that you respond to every comment. I have that 30 amp box and am doing something similar. My question is why go with 2 - 20 amp breakers instead of 2 - 15 amp breakers for the 30 amp box? Is that considered overloaded? Thanks for your time.

great video but i noticed a couple of things. Your outlets are only 15 amp so you should run 15amp brakers. The black wire in the box is right behind the bottom screw in the breaker box. If the screw is touching the hot black wire it can wear a hole in the insulation and short out.

Only question is why you are using a 40 amp main for a 30 amp shore plug. You could potentially overload that shore plug as the breaker wont trip- getting it so hot it melts- or even worse- if the shore plug has a dysfunctional breaker on the supply end- it could fry it as well. Just wondering.

Thank you for this video. A LOT more detailed than the first one. Questions... 1. How many outlets can you run on each breaker? Where do you splice? Also, I assume if your outlets are further away, you cut a much longer set of wires!? 2. How many breakers can you have in the 30a breaker box? Thx so much B
@andrestorres4062
@andrestorres4062 4 года назад
Brian Henry you can have as many outlets as you want. The NEC doesn’t specify a limit but on a 30 amp circuit you have to make sure whatever you plug in doesn’t exceed that all together

Absolutely loved this video because I’m at this point in my build. I’m gonna have to call bs on dipping out five seconds after you mention having a fire, requiring flashing. Kinda dirty if you ask me. Slow down, tell the story about almost burning the trailer to the ground, and then expand on your solution. The video ended, and I’m here “Wait! What!?”
@FakeLegGreg
@FakeLegGreg 2 года назад
I never had a fire or even close to a fire. I don't recall saying anything about almost burning the trailer to the ground. I was told by a viewer that I needed to separate the electrical wire from the insulation, that the insulation was combustible. So, I added a simple piece of flashing to shield the wires from the insulation. I was also told by another viewer that the flashing would vibrate out, but it never did. No drama, just applying suggestions from viewers. Thanks for watching.

Good vid! I'm trying to understand why two breakers of say "x" amps is used instead of one breaker of 2x? is there a reason for 2 20amps as opposed to one 40 amp?
@FakeLegGreg
@FakeLegGreg 8 месяцев назад
The pole you plug into at the RV park is 30 amps max, so the total amp draw is less than 30 amps. 2circuits allows for lights to be on both circuits so it doesn't go completely dark if one circuit is overloaded. We ran electric heat/AC on one circuit and everything else on the other circuit( radio, microwave, TV).

Great information! I'm going to watch your other videos. I am in the process of designing a tiny RV/camping trailer to tow behind my recumbent tricycle. I want shore power for sure. Question: must I have a 30 amp power port? In other words is there a 120 volt (15 amp or 20 amp) power port? If so should I still use a load center with breaker box and breakers? I was hoping to go smaller to save on the weight of a big 20 foot 30 amp cable. Please advise, and thank you for sharing your expertise.

I have some of this wire leftover and would like to put in another outlet. The length of wire I have left is not long enough. Can I connect it with a 12/3 stranded 600v wire so that it could reach the location where I want to put the new outlet? Would connecting 300v to 600v wires be a problem?
