Are you a short person with a big bike problem? This video is for you! I am 5'2" and love riding the R1200GS, R1250GS (sport suspension) and F850GS. This video gives riders the skills they need to safely turn a bike around on steep, loose hill so they can head back down and try it again if they want!

This is (one of) the exact scenarios I lowered my bike for. I really wanted to be able to get both feet down for something like this, but I've sacrificed a lot with that suspension drop. I think after all these videos you've convinced me to un-lower her. THANK YOU.
@motanelustelistu
@motanelustelistu 4 года назад
Well,by lowering,you defeat the whole purpouse of it and almost completely annule their caracteristics = ) . How you lowered it (change the front and back suspension,or ?) and by how much ? How tall is the seat from factory,anyhow ?

Thank you very much for the video -- very informative and helpful. I'm also not that tall and I intend buying a 1200GS (I had a Varadero for years which also is heavy bike) so am interested in picking up all the tips I can so that I can ride my GS on trails without any worries. I am a guy who recently traded my 2018 HD sportster for a GS 850. I am so in love with my new bike, though on occasion I second guess my decision because of the heaviness and height of the BMW. (I am just over 5 ' 9") And I grew very attached to my sporster. But all my doubts disappear when I am actually riding the GS 850. Your videos are right on. Just the 2 that I have watched were totally helpful for my needs. Adventure bikes are tall and somewhat heavy for any rider, so practice and understanding technique is applicable for all riders. Thanks for the videos.

The way you hande this bike is amazing! I am 5'8 and 1250GS is my dream bike but I am so scared of it's weight and dimensions. I rode 2 bikes heavier than 240kgs and I dropped both of them. How you maneuver with this 280kg beast is like me maneuvering mine MT07.

Great video. I was recently taught this technique at an off-road school. The only difference was that we dismounted before doing the clutching. We used our hip to help support the bike. I think this method might provide more control and would be safer if the bike were to topple with you sitting on it. Not certain, but just a thought.

If you are going to do this in gear, at leas use a higher gear like 3rd or 4th , this will give you lower engine brake because you have inverted ratio since the wheel give the input to engine, also this saves you from wear on gearbox

Ok, I understand all this. Unfortunately I do not have a clutch. Do you have any suggestions for a short girl on a AT DCT? If my bike engine is turned off, it is in neutral, what then?.
@motoikandi
@motoikandi 4 года назад
Good question, B. I actually didn't know the answer to this question (one of the reasons I don't really care for DCT), so I reached out to my friend and off-road trainer, Bill Dragoo (with D.A.R.T.). He offered the following: "As luck would have it, we’ve had several DCTs in our classes. We have adopted methods for them to achieve a fair replication of the procedures we teach for conventional clutch bikes in most exercises. For the hill fail recovery, we teach them to pull and hold the parking brake as they stop. It doesn’t matter if the engine is off or not. Release the brake in the same manner as they would a clutch to allow the bike to smoothly reverse. Using the parking brake instead of the rear brake prevents the issue of losing balance to the right, stepping down and releasing the rear brake. When that happens, the reflex is to grab the front brake to hold the bike on the hill. We all know how that ends on a loose or hard packed, steep hill. The parking brake, being the rear, has the same (downhill brake is most effective) application as releasing the clutch against engine compression only without any thumping through of a compression stroke. It actually works quite well." I hope this helps!
@bstapleton3248
@bstapleton3248 4 года назад
Yes I had guessed that would be the answer, I worry about damaging my parking break, but absent an alternative, I guess that would be it. Thank you.

You know that would work for big fat guys like me too. But I have to say, that even thought I used to ride a BMW F650 Dakar, I prefer smaller and lighter bikes in the dirt. That 1200 GS is just too heavy. Heck my F650 was too heavy. Give me something more like the Honda CRF250L for dirt riding. However when it comes to short people, I highly recommend my current ride - the Honda Fury. The seat is only 25 inches off the ground and I drag my foot pegs around every corner so this is a pavement only machine.
