Riding on the granite. Took a baseball bat to the spark arresters. The flying switch. Great old days when men could be men. Thanks for these vids. Memories

I have seen several flying switches even as late as 2005. The last one I saw the brakie rode the cars (two) down the side track which went out into the street for street running. He cranked on that brakewheel for all he was worth as there was a car parked where the track got into the street. He stopped about five feet short of plowing that car down the road. Then the engine came back to get the cars as all they had to do was run around them. The look on that brakie's face was priceless. Normally I would of had my video camera but that day I didn't have it.

Love all of these videos of branchlines, taking us back to a time when nearly community in America had trains passing through--and accomplished without computers! Reminds me of the old C A & C (Hudson-Columbus, Ohio) which passed through my hometown of Westerville, Ohio, until early Conrail (1982)...also, the commentaries are priceless!!!...

Amazing to think that 3 of those Wanamie tank engines are still around. #4 is privately owned in Oregon, #9 (DL&W #28) is owned by Vierson Boiler Works in Grand Rapids, MI, and #28 is stored in Merril, Oregon as a part of Fred Kepner’s collection.

An old Brakeman buddy of mine did that once on the Sante Fe w/a passenger car yrs back. A Road Foreman saw him do it and told him "Don saved yourself 10 minutes and got ya 10 brownies!" I've forgotten what that meant exactly. But wasn't good. Lol

sad that alot of theses are bike trails now :(
@Realohiorailroadproductions
As someone who rides a bike everywhere, I couldn't agree more bike paths are quite frankly pointless they wind all over the place and have many Hills and it's so much quicker to just ride on the road or a sidewalk. Each day I hope and pray that we can see railroads making a comeback.
