This is a video that has been requested by viewers in the past. I figured while I am working on artwork for new printing videos we could cover this topic for all you beginners. In this tutorial video we discuss the minimum requirements needed to print t-shirts with good results. It is of course possible to screen print with much less than what we show here but if you want an easier time with great commercial quality prints, then these items will help out to no end. It is an industry show but if you're looking to buy equipment and start a business you should be able to attend. I know people show up at the show and pay to get in and walk the floor. I do not think they make you prove you are in the industry. Just tell them you want to look at equipment because you're interested in starting up. I can't see how they would deny that. Hi Catspit, love your videos and thanks so much. Is it possible to have your underbase layer also be the white layer of the logo? I have a four color logo going on a black shirt but only a four head press. How does this work with flashing too? Do I have to flash after every color or will that over-cure the ink.

Thanks, glad I can help out through my video work. Yes, you can. You'll just need to print it white enough for the final white in the design. Usually we might add a highlight printer to overprint those white areas with white again but you can do it either way depending. Just semi cure each print and you should be fine. Thanks for watching! hello i want to ask something. planning to used 6color 6 station rotary and my flash dryer is manual. do you suggest. to keep it on? or switch off/on every time?

I love your videos. Maybe you can make a video about your thoughts about the future of screen printing for all startups. What kind of customers are possible and what about DTG? Especially for small companies that doesn't print hundreds or thousands of shirts per month. Can the compete with DTG printers? Does it still make sense to invest in screen printing equipment? The dtg has many things that will keep it from competing with screen printing. Screen printing and dtg need art software so the you need that no matter what, the dtg has one problem that has to be dealt with on a continual basis, and that is ink clogging the tubes and heads of a printer. The dtg is really just a high priced ink jet printer , which you could operate continuously for years with no problems, with regular maintenance it will keep going , the Dtg isn't like , that if don't watch it you mess up the heads or clog your easy, white ink is the worst one but the heads can clog on them all . Also white ink ,which is expensive at around 1000.00 a gallon , has titanium dioxide in it which is always coming out of the solution settling and clogging . The best dtgs will have systems to mitigate that problem, but knowing your machine is going to be the best thing. If you know the cleaning and replace everything that needs to be replaced, you still have to deal with humidity , but not too much humidity, the dtgs that can mitigate that along with the white coming out of solution would be the best. Then you need a heat press, because that cures the ink or dries it out. If you want to print on dark shirts you need to pretreat them with a solution and heat press them dry, then you can print white ink and have it show up on the shirts, so you need a pretreater or the cheap way a Wagner paint sprayer some people have used a paint roller. Now if you buy a 60, 000 dollar cheapest kornit you don't need to buy a pretreater it's built in and kornit is the only one I know that prints on the shirt right after the pretreat cutting them time down considerably . The kornit has an automatic like machine that can print 300 shirts an hour , but it might be a million dollars, so that is the only dtg that print and keep up with screen printing for speed . Logistically screen printing is faster but dtg doesn't need minimums so until they have a dtg that prints as fast as an automatic screen printing machine, screen is still the way to go to print thousands of shirts a day which is what I do.

Does your washout booth have to be in a light safe area? Looking at setting up a home setup in my garage but trying to figure out my darkroom/washout area. Great videos!

Ideally, yes. That way you can start washing out the screen in darkroom conditions. Once you're started and the screen is wet well, you can turn on the back light in the washout booth. Assuming you have one of course. Again that's ideally speaking but standard fluorescent lights and shaded light usually have very low UV output. I do not have a video about that because it's not really practical. Once the screens are inked up you won't be able to see through them easily enough to re-register every screen to every shirt. It's also not practical to have to register the screens for each shirt. The artwork would have to be so simple and the colors would need to be far from one another to make something like that even doable. Thanks for watching! so you don't think a conveyer dryer is necessary for professional results? Just wondering because I only have a flash and I printed some white ink and it didn't cure right (cracked when I pulled it) so I have been looking to buy a conveyer.

If you're talking about the final print quality, no. The print isn't going to look better because it went through a belt dryer. Flash cure units can do a great job at curing inks but it's slow. So when time becomes money, you'll want to get a belt dryer. It can be more challenging to properly cure inks with a flash cure and a belt dryer is faster and more consistent. You very likely experienced under cured ink. But if you pay more attention to the curing with the flash you should be able to get a proper cure. Thanks for watching! At the time I made this video yes. A forced air flash was different than a standard infrared. But I had Ranar make a forced air flash cure that I can turn the air off. So now all of my Ranar air flashes can do both water based and plastisol inks because you can turn the forced air off. Thanks for watching! It would be vector art but if you have never set up art for screen printing, you will most likely not be able to send screen ready art. Because I will do 17 screens in one sitting, I use buckets and brushes for my chemicals. Using a spray bottle would cripple my hand quickly doing 17 screens. Hello, Is an epson 1400/1430 with accu rip software necessary as well to print out the designs?

You can use any inkjet printer that will handle clear media but many Epson wide format printers will be compatible with RIP software. But you do not need RIP unless you want to do halftones and/or automated color separations. All black systems are designed to save ink and make it cost less. CatspitProductions yes I use it all day every day, I put it in a spray bottle shake it then spray it on the screen after it sits for a little I then use news paper to wipe it off the screen, once you get it going the plastisol will come right off like magic I the use the pure Dawn to do a final wash. It's cheap quick and smells a lot better than the other stuff.

@@CatspitProductions I'm looking at the Ranar P4400. It shows that it's a 4 station press. Would I be able to turn it into a 1 or 2 station press by not installing the other stations? I have a small garage and not much space. The stations are adjustable? Meaning you can move them back and forth. The chinese model I have, I had to rig it with a bracket that wasn't built for it, but it works. Pretty janky. Also would those metal pallets for vista presses fit on that p4400? what mesh count you recommend for white plastisol, one color design

That really depends on the detail in your artwork. But generally speaking with plastisol inks we try to use the most open mesh count possible for the art. making a video like that does sound like a lot of work. good luck if you decide to tackle it. could help a lot of people. it's the situation i'm in. i can draw and know my way around adobe cloud but i have nowhere to print other than my carpet covered living room. kitchen's too small. bathroom's too small. can clean screens in the bathroom and dry in the closet but actual printing would happen over carpet. yikes. thought about stapling plastic to the floor or something but have no realistic idea of how messy things could get.

It's a semi industrial process so it could be difficult to undertake in a home without damaging something. Inks can get everywhere by accident and plastisol inks are like Godzilla. They will destroy Tokyo if you allow them to do so. Screen making is also a dirty process with chemicals involved as well as pressure washers. While there are some home brews, screen printing can be difficult to take on as a commercial endeavor in an apartment or home without any garage space. Thanks for watching.
