An hour and a half boiled down into one minute: This is how I go about choosing the light and shadow colours for painting an egg (or most objects, actually).
I start with the local colour, match it eggsactly, then choose other colours from the Munsell Big Book of Colour for the four modelling factors:
1. Shadow
2. Half tone
3. Dark light
4. Light light
Then it's just blending and adjusting by eye.
