As someone who has been playing bass for longer than guitar, I don't understand how normal scale basses are normal to most bassists. I feel like I'm gonna get Arthritis in my hands by just playing one

So stupid that people still think short scale basses are only for kids and beginners. Plenty of great bass players have played short scales over the decades dummies, and some exclusively. You get more thump and bottom end out of short scale basses and many of us actually prefer the tone, faster necks and superior playability to a 34 inch scale.

Yeah, I don't get why people think that. Paul McCartney uses a Hofner Violin and that's a short scale. Yeah. he's used a few others but his main one is one of the two Hofner Violins he got in the 60s

I have the Gretsch with just one middle pickup and it's a little monster. It handles pedals very well and my only gripe is the neck dive on it. But for the price it is a very good instrument for everything: practice, shows, and recording. I share it with my younger brother since he can actually reach!

But will we ever see Short Shcale Shootout Shickshty Shicksh? I bought the Squier (Shquier?) new on sale for $150 US, and it's a pretty amazing instrument for that price. Excellent fit and finish, cool looking black gloss paint job with matching headstock, and a wide variety of tones from the P/J pickups. I think it deserves a little more love and attention than it got here.

My first bass in 1965 was a Gibson EB 0 (Zero, not O as in Ocean). Left the band and sold it in '69. 54 years later I decided to start playing again. Vintage EB 0's in good shape are Thousand$. Pleasantly surprised to find a new Epiphone EB 0, an exact replica of my old Gibson, for $239. I recalled why the Humbucker was called a mudbucker back in the day. I was never able to clean up the muddy sound, but still enjoy playing it occasionally. Next up was a Squire Bass Six which is also a short scale (Also used by the Beatles in the studio) Really like it, but in the end, and after I smashed my pinkie, I got a Fender Mustang. Absolutely love it. Really enjoy how one adjusts the tone and point to the pickup. Great job.

The Ernie Ball Musician Silhouette Baritone/Bass Is pretty awesome. It's 29.5in. scale length and 6 strings, tuned E to E one octave below a guitar. The string spacing is about the same as a guitar. Schecter made the Hellraiser C6 baritone/bass, with active pickups, that is really good. They also made the Hellcat vi that is like the old fender Bass vi. It has Duncan strat pickups in it.

I’ve never played a short scale bass, but have been looking into them online because my niece is having difficulty with a standard scale due to the size of her hands. The more I learn about them, the more I find myself wondering why the hell I’ve been playing a 34 inch bass for twenty years, and why any bassist would play one when a short scale is available. The only “advantage” that anyone seems able to name for full scale is more prominence of overtones and less prominence of the fundamental, and I find it difficult to conceive of that as any kind of advantage. Less overtones sounds like bass heaven to me.

FWIW, I LOVE my Ibanez TMB30 30" scale bass. Great tones and very playable. I owned an Epi short scale for a short while but sold it. The Epi was a boat anchor and sounded a bit muddy to me. I also tried the new Ibanez Mezzo 32" bass and sent it back. It had a weird chirpy tone that I just didn't care for. The Mezzo also had a tiny 1.490" nut width which made the neck feel like a toy.

You can't hear if someone is playing a short scale bass. Someone posted recordings of various basses in the talkbass.com forum a couple of years ago, and many people were absolutely convinced that one of the recordings was a long scale bass. With the exception of a few, they were wrong.

It's a very prevalent thing. They did a test with brass instruments a few years ago to check if people could hear which metal alloys the inistruments were made of. So they constructed trumpets of expensive alloys and cheap tin, the same type used to make cans. In a blindfold test people were unable to hear tell the difference, even though there measureable differences according to a sound spectrometer. But when they took off the blindfold suddenly they were able to "hear" all kinds of differences. And it's the same story with tonewood, very expensive instruments, etc.

I had cervical fusion of every disk in my neck, so I'm going to have to change basses. I currently have two 34" basses, a four string and a five string. It's really difficult for me to play because of limited movement of my neck. I was looking at getting a Fender Mustang, but I really like that Gretsch. I like the sound and the look; it seems to have that really good bass sound. I saw a demo with a Serek Midwestern 2; it was really nice.

Great review!! I have comments... 1. It is refreshing to see real bassist using a variety of techniques reviewing short scale instruments. 2. Your two player format kicks butt. One guy riffing while the other fiddles with settings is brilliant. 3....The bad news...your treatment of our sitting President missed the mark. He has really really really small hands and the fender is only slightly orange in comparison. The Ibanez Mikro with 28.6 inch scale in Roadster Orange is more appropriate unless of course someone builds an orange bass ukelele. Otherwise a fantastic review!

I own a unknown name Short Scale Bass as my first instrument as a kid from like 1991, the Neck has bowed a bit over the years but is still my favorite to play. Wish i could find out more about it, it was used when I got it. the only writing on it is a metalic sticker saying "Equipped with POWERSOUND High Gain-Super Distortion Pick ups" Super easy and fun to play, feels great super light, sounds wonderful. Looking forward to your SSSO #2 because I think you missed a very important "Corvette-ish" entry in this class: The Supro Huntington I/II/III. Phenomenal range of tone available even without its optional bridge piezo. Mix that in and the range goes thru the roof; nicely counteracting the claim that short-scales can't deliver the high-end punch. Those who continue to claim that shorties are just for kids I can guarantee haven't taken this Ferrari out for a spin.

I found that the Mustang sounds good and feels nice to play sitting down, but the neck dives to the floor when on a strap. The same applies to the Chowney, although the neck dive isn't as bad as with the Mustang. I have recently acquired a second hand Gretsch G2220. In my opinion, it has the best sound of the three and balances well on a strap (very important if using it on a gig). I think it would probably sound great with flatwounds on. The pickups are single coil, by the way, not humbuckers (The Gretsch Guitars website confirms this).

I have both the Mustang and the TMB30. On price the TMB30 wins. On sound they are both great. Fender edges it on looks, but only because there are few colour options on the Ibanez. The Fender is better made for sure, but that's not to say the Ibanez isn't a quality bass. I guess what I'm trying to say is - You need both! I'm recording this weekend and will be using both.

The Ibanez Mikros are actually pretty good basses. Comes in 4 and 5 string, hardware is decent, and the pickups are also good. It feels like a real bass, whereas the Squier, Fender and Gretsch to me feel cheap. Haven't tried a Chowny but can't say that it's worth the $350 difference based on the active preamp alone. You guys should demo the Ibanez Mikro, you actually might like them and they sell like hotcakes as travel basses.

I'm not a huge fan of ibanez but I agree with your statement. i actually have a Chowney and it's one of the best basses i've ever owned.

Yeah I have the GRG20 Mikro Bass and its pretty good. I'm a fairly novice Bass player (guitarist mainly) but I would struggle to criticise it and for the money I'm really not going to complain or replace it...

I have an Ibanez Mikro bass. It does the job very well. I would also like to see a demo with the Ibanez Mikro VS. the Jackson Dinky Minion bass.

I don't know about that.. I mean it's a question of personnal preferences. My friend got a Mustang bass and it plays really well. As a fact, I asked him to borrow it for a gig and I ended up playing more songs on that than my Alembic.

I have a Squier Bronco Bass and I adore it. It's interesting in that it has a 6-pole Stratocaster pickup, which you think wouldn't sound very good, but it's the best sounding bass I've ever played. It's bright, snappy, and responsive, and sits VERY well in a mix, which is important, since my band only has 3 members, so our bassist (not me, I'm rhythm guitar and lead vocals) doesn't have to worry about us drowning him out.

I hope that the Ibanez Mikro and Talman basses will appear in the sequel.

I jumped from Fender jazz basses (3) to a Gibson Lp tribute DC in worn ebony and it the greatest. I’m gonna add the Gretsch G2220 so as for a backup. The fenders are too heavy, not liking the sound anymore either. Short scale basses are a real blessing for me. The push-pull knob works on the Gibson like it’s supposed too and the 3-way on the Gretsch will do what it’s supposed to I have two Gibson Les Pauls Double cut 6 string guitars from the late 50’s ones a junior. They are light, killer tone and already claimed by my kids. I’m sorry I didn’t get Gibson bass sooner

All basses sound great, actually. But the Chowny surprised me with its myriad of tones. Wow.

Short scale Warwick? That does sound intriguing. The thing is, I wish there was a way to spend some proper time with one of these bases to find out what they're like. I'm sorry, but a bit of a play in a shop's no good - I'd join a bass club and pay a fee so I could swap my bass every month and get to try out all manner of weird and wonderful instruments. How do they work in a mix? How do they sit in a live situation? Anyway... pipe dream.

Come on guys.... what about all the Wyman framus basses and McCartney’s Hofner?! Were modern bassists really born yesterday? Stanley Clarke’s Alembics were all 30” too! You’ve got to do a bit of googling before you jump in front of the camera. Know your heritage!!! 😀

Late to this party so you've probably already decided...but my two cents. I've played SS for the past few years & my favorite is the G&L Tribute Fallout SS, followed closely by the SBMM StingRay SS. Primarily because of the pickup location & the MFD pickup itself. Third is the Squier VM Jaguar SS...I find it on par with the MIM Mustang PJ. Full disclosure I own the G&L, SBMM & Squire...wouldn't let go of any of them.

You didn't make mention of the Hofner 500/1 violin bass which is also short scale. Probably the most famous short scale bass there was. And, still being made, even the licensed Chinese built models.

I've had my Fender Music Master Short Scale Bass since 1981. My only criticism is that it only has 2 saddles on the bridge.
@ClassicalPan
@ClassicalPan 4 года назад
Have you considered swapping the bridge? Could always put the original one back on if you want.
@bassace2006
@bassace2006 4 года назад
@@ClassicalPan I have thought of that but I thought a bridge from a long scale bass maybe too wide. I have since found out about the Fender Mustang has a 4 saddle bridge so it may be doable. Although I wouldn't want to be drilling holes that would be visible when the original is put back, (if I were to sell it). But thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
