Young people describe the short sharp shock treatment - does it really deter them from crime?
Documentary in the 'Just Williams' series. Youngsters who have been sentenced to a Whitelaw spell of detention at Haslar, near Gosport, tell what they feel about it, and we see how this sort of punishment is organised. How much does it deter potential criminals ? Good film for discussion on crime and punishment.
Made in 1983 this film reflects the cultural attitudes, medical procedures and language of the time it was made. The imagery and film quality may not be to modern standards. But the issues raised are timeless.

"I mean, they're not gunna kill ya, so if you give 'em a quick short, sharp, shock, they don't do it again. Dig it? I mean he get off lightly, 'cos I would've given him a thrashing - I only hit him once! It was only a difference of right and wrong, innit. I mean good manners don't cost nothing do they, eh?" Had to post that.

Didn't work for me, did two months at North sea in 1981, it would have had more effect on me if they released me after a week as I found that to be the hardest. Trouble is you get used to it after that and it doesn't seem so bad. Would have been much more effective if the short sharp shock was much shorter so as you don't get used to it and leave the place in shock after a week, I feel that would have sorted me out, unfortunately it took another 5 years of in and out of prison before I finally grew up and settled down. Would love to see them come back for shorter terms to put some of these bad boys in their place, say a week for first time and if you re-offend within a year of release back you go for a much longer stint.

totally agree, it worked for me because I had prospects on the out but the harder lads who had shit lives couldn't give a toss and when I was in it was coming upto Christmas and the Manchester riots happened and then they stopped shouting at us. Works for some.

I was in Kidlingont Detention Centre in Oxford at the age of 15 in October 1980 for 3 months. Whilst I was in there, there was a National prison strike. I also remember the BBC came and filmed a documentary about The Short Sharp Shock - I'm assuming it was part of this documentary, but I have yet to find any footage from Kidlington. Brings back memories looking at this footage as has been a while. The film Scum had just been released and I watched it just before going down! ...( I wasn't looking forward to it). I got especially nervous when I was assigned to work in the greenhouse!!!! That time inside sorted me out. Have never been in trouble since. I remember one kid getting released, and he had nobody to pick him up, so he stole a car to get home! and ended up back inside - sad.

Samways dished out the slaps, we did 44 laps of the football field 8 miles for blue ties. But I think there was another routine of a lap then a circuit, then a lap then a circuit. Red ties had circuit training, it was fucking freezing, the winter of 81-82. Running round in a vest and shorts. I got 5p fine for dust on the bed frame. Saturday tea was awful. Boiled egg and 2 slices of bread and a round of margarine. Don’t make a sandwich, don’t rest elbows on table. And if they needed anyone for pot wash and no one had played up the SO would shout “ no body touch any part of your face or head” then they’d just wait a few seconds and catch someone scratching his nose and he’d be on pot wash or scrubbing.

Goudhurst made me worse. I went in for TDA, by the time i came out i had learn't a lot more about crime. Also the screws made it impossible to keep up, abide by the rules and do it all to a high standard. Of course they made sure you failed. And if you didn't fail, they would put you on goveners report, i stood there dumbfounded, i hadn't done anything wrong i says to the screw, he said you have a button missing from your jacket. I looked down, no buttons missing, screw whips out the scissors and cuts one off, and says you nicked. Can't beat the system, so i cheated and made life a bit easier for myself. when i did get out i thought if thats the hardest time they can give me, i might as well go on the thieve, as going to be easier next time.

There was a Coldstream Guardsman in there doing 3 months, Willis his name was. He was 21 I think, shouldn’t have been there . I think he’d been in Colchester military prison then discharged , and sentenced by magistrates to 3 months. The short sharp shock was literally nothing to him, he’d had a meeting with the governor and said the governor thought he shouldn’t be there. He suddenly disappeared after 2 weeks. I suspect the governor spoke to the home office and he got moved to adult jail. He was about 6 feet 3 about 16 stone and the screws treated him differently. Nice bloke though,

That was my job laundry orderly. You could get buts from the officers ashtrays and use izal toilet paper for skins and get a light from the boiler. You could also steal big blocks of cheese and biscuits from the main stores and stash them in the laundry. Perks give good kit for canteen. That's Benny hill at 2.40 Scrubbing floors in a line 10 to the left 10 to the right 10 centre move back. Bunny hops down the corridors and a whack if you went above the line on the wall. Mile before breakfast then circuits. Digging trenches and taking the soil 100 yards away running then filling the hole back in. Circuit. Every time must be quicker or you get days added. Mars bar treats for canteen. The governor's missus who was in the laundry used to love coming into the showers. The doctor was a nonce. I was born and bred in Gosport.

Aldington 1976 3 months or 2 months 2 weeks 5 days and a brek as we used to say, it was hard there back then as hard as Send according to lads who had done time in both, ive seen so called hard lads crying for there mums, one lad after doing 3 months got gate arrest went to court and was back by tea time doing another 3 months he tried to top himself, anyone remember the PE screw bastard he kidney punched me for not swinging my arms high enough whilst on parade, i went down like a sack of shit and couldn't get up without help, ex special forces apparently

I was in there for 3 months in 1966, hard place. I was threatened with gate arrest if i didn't own up to other crimes but I kept my mouth shut and it didn't happen, but I was shitting myself over it. Not sure if it was the same PE screw, small stocky bloke and we were told he was ex mercenary. So glad to get out of the place and I never went back into an institution so I guess it worked.

By all accounts it was one of the better centres, there was a lot of sexual abuse in the other ones, but I did see some bad beatings from the screws in Aldington

@@paulcaney6284 I got shipped down from Holandsy Bay for doing a runner. I arrived around midday and the reception screw put me straight into the population without the usual reception beasting because he knew I was local. A genuinely decent bloke! I didn't understand why I was dressed head to toe in red though and then someone explained I was in runners gear! After a few weeks they took me out of it and I was ok apart from the episode in the 'treatment room' when Fuck-Up and Lofty were screaming at me and a young traveller kid to hit them. They knew we wouldn't obviously. I remember them coming and being all matey just before discharge. I guess they didn't want kids looking for revenge.

3 months ??..i done every single day of a 6 month stretch back in 74..screws hated me cos i wouldn't conform..spent most of my time in the 'block' where i was made to scrub the black and white tiled floor in the squat position, black ones first then the white ones 100 times each and had to shout the count, when i got to the end i was told to start again so i stood up with bucket in hand and soaked the screw !! 5 screws descended on me dragged me to the cell kicking and punching me,fuckers couldn't break me though.there were other times when i punched a couple of them..S.O. Pierce was one,Chalky White was another..PT Instructor was Victor Brooks ex Para and Henry Cooper's sparring partner he was the only screw who left me alone..Hadley was the worse he was a mother fucker !!!..i held the fastest times for the mile and circuit training during my 'stay'..day i was released a screw called Crocker escorted me to the bus stop and said "boy you tried to beat the system and i can honestly say you came very, very close !.

I spent my whole youth from kids homes at 11 to these shit wholes 3 times .What brain box though a short sharp shock would make any difference to a condition lad of years of it I don't know. Most of the Lads you came across in these places were good lads that had no decent guidance and role models .A good dad to show them the way .They always won in the end if you kicked off .Because the places were full of sickos who love punishment handing out .Just gave them what they wanted .Hazlar was easy time compared to Usk .Usk in Wales was different. All Wesh from the inmates to the screws and they hated the English .They had a great punishment. Two 50 ton piles of concrete 1/4 a mile apart and a wheel barrow. All weather's and all day till sundown and sun up .Nobody's beating that .Refuse and slap slap and stay there .
