Law regarding Number plate size: There is actually no law regulating the size of your plate. The law with number plates is regulated based on the letter and number size, space between each letter/number and space around the letters and numbers. If you are trimming the sides of your plate, (considering if the plate already has legal sized letters and numbers and spacings), you can trim them down leaving 11mm of space either side of the letter/number and each side of the plate

You do realise that what you have done is actually illegal i shall explain why. Look in the bottom right hand corner of your number plate You will see a code starting with BSAU plus some numbers that is the british standard code that is required on all number plates that makes them legal,by slicing that off you have just made the number plate illegal...Instead you can buy custom made number plates from any reputable supplier that includes the short plates too with the reg font spaces correct but shorter in length your plate is now illegal anyone who tries this at home may well fail the next mot im not a jobsworth or anything like that im just telling you the facts you can have shorter plates but these must be made by a proper manufacturer.
