Shortest Chess Game Ever? White Wins in 2 Moves, but How | Chess Anecdotes & Lessons for Players

Is this the shortest chess game you've ever seen? In this video, I share with you a short fun story/anecdote about a correspondence game played between James Franklin Campbell and Alan Ehrlich in 1990. Campbell was playing with the white pieces & Ehrlich was playing with the black pieces and they started with the modern defense chess opening. This was a long distance game & not a regular over the board game where both players sit at the Chessboard and play at the same time. Both players were using the postal method to make & communicate their moves to their opponent. In order to save some time & money for postage, black decided to make two moves at once. This is what white took advantage of & trapped the black bishop & rook. After which, Black resigned in only 2 moves & white won the game. This game teaches us an important lesson in chess. Whether you are playing as white or black, you need to consider your opponent's moves before making yours. No matter whether its the opening, middlegame or the endgame, every stage of the game is important. Eventhough this is an old correspondence game played via post, but the lesson is relevant even today. You need to keep this in mind even while playing a chess game online.
I also have an interesting Chess Puzzle for you at the end of this video. Let's see if you can find the best move for white in the given chess problem.

Puzzle answer Queen to f8+ he must have to take either by king or his rook , if rook captures, knight to e7, if king captures , pawn to rook to h8. In both cases, there is nasty checkmate.

Great "moral of the story", beginners often make the mistake of simply trying to memorize moves to get a solid opening (I know I did as a beginner) - chess is memorization and pattern recognition, absolutely, but it's also intuitive, you must always react to your opponent's moves as well as applying learned tactics. Great video

I think if players want to commit their next move, they should fold them up in a separate piece of paper that says “Do not open until you have decided your next move,” and include those papers even when they haven’t committed their next move so the opponent doesn’t know if they’ve committed a move or not (since in this case, if White knew Black had committed a move, he could probably guess it would be Bg7).

Two chessmasters, separated by hundreds of miles, are playing a correspondence game in the 19th century in an unnamed colonized African country. The game is taking months because of the lack of an established postal system. During the tight end game, white gets black in a particularly difficult position. Months go by waiting for black's reply to the point that white becomes convinced black is stalling and will inevitably resign. Finally, a servant is dispatched to relay black's reply. The servant rides for days on horseback in a driving rainstorm. Before reaching white's household, he finds he must dismount and ford a particularly deep river swollen by the recent torrential storm. Tired and soaking the servant finally reaches the residence and hands the sealed envelope to white who immediately opens it. "J'adoube," it reads.

Really interesting! It reminds me that we need to be careful at every step of our life. One move ahead expecting the the normal happening would go otherwise. Possibilities have all directions. I played correspondence chess when my friend was in UK. We sometimes used to play two moves with if conditions involved or otherwise. Long back somewhere in1990s.

This is the answer to the puzzle: 1.Qf8+ if the king captures with 1. K×f8 Then, 2.Rh8 is a checkmate. and white wins the game. If the rook captures with 1. R×f8, then 2. Ne7 is checkmate and white wins. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also, Mr. Adavani can you please do more trap videos because I already watched all of your videos. I also love the Saturday tournaments.

Yes, White cleverly but wilfully and maliciously took advantage of Black's mistake of announcing his next move before seeing White's move. The moral of this story is that some people are more interested in winning than playing chess for its inherent mental challenges and the joy that comes from meeting those challenges. When playing White, I enjoy playing all the different openings to explore all the different possibilities. I especially enjoy playing Black to master my ability to find the best move to counter White's first move advantage. As a result, I have met countless people and made numerous lifelong friends and never "burned out" playing chess for over six decades. Yes, I enjoy winning, but I'm more interested in promoting chess than beating someone. Play those weaker openings and give your weaker players the opportunity to beat you!!! You'll be surprised at the interesting situations you'll find yourself in!!😇

I've heard chess masters say that chess is war without the blood. Seems to me that that's the challenge. It's always mental. If it gives you joy, then good. If you only have something to prove, that doesn't sound joyful to me.

The answer÷ White should take knight from f5 to e7.so the rook will cut it down.then white can use the queen to remove that rook from game.then in any case the queen could move to d8 performing the checkmate

Qe7 (sacrificing the queen) Rxe7 (Rook takes the queen) Nxe7+ (Forking the king, queen and bishop) Kf7 (Stopping the check) Nxg6 (Taking the queen). We have a rook for a bishop which is advantageous to white.

Excuse me, but Bobby Fisher lost a game with no moves being played at all. (Fischer-Spassky, WCC 1972, game 2.) Fischer had the white pieces, but failed to turn up. This is not the only occasion when the player with the white pieces lost by default with no moves being played, but as far as I am aware is the only time it happened in a WCC.

White didn't "take advantage." He won according to the situation presented to him. It reminds me of a story told by George Koltanowski to my high school chess club in about 1973. Jacques Mieses and Emmanuel Lasker were dinner guests of some gazillionaire chess patron. After the meal, the tycoon insisted they play a game for him in return for his hospitality, on a chess set of his own design. Each piece was a glass or bottle of some kind of wine or spirit. The pawns were small liqueur glasses, while the queen was a bottle of cognac. Naturally, the player had to drink any piece he captured. Lasker had white, and played e4. Mieses answered with e5, and Lasker played Qh5. Mieses played Nf6 to drive away the queen, and Lasker took the pawn on f7 with check, smugly swallowing the small portion of liqueur. Mieses was forced to take the queen with his king, and had to drink the whole bottle of cognac right then and there. They carried him out feet first a move or two later, and Lasker was declared the winner. Lasker was renowned for finding the unexpected road to victory--and the game in this video is no different.
@Elharion2003
@Elharion2003 3 года назад
That's a bit more clever. In this case, he's trying to play a real game and white accomplished nothing besides wasting time by doing this.

Solution to the puzzle: Queen will move to f8. Then it'll be a check. If the king captures the Queen, then the rook on H1 will move to h8 and then it's a check mate. In other case, if Queen moves to f8 and rook takes the Queen, then knight on f5 moves to e7 and then it's again a mate.
