Debatable. The only actively antagonistic thing she does to you, the player, is attack you once you're able to take the throne. Since she mainly uses curses as her means, this isn't that much different than what Yuria will try to do in 3, make you a Lord of Hollows. Most of the game's obstacles are because of Vendrick deliberately making it difficult to follow him, spreading around the Lord souls, placing his second best man at the castle (Looking Glass Knight) and his best man overall at his back (Velsadt), making it so that only a human can go through the door to the crypt, etc. Though Vendrick is also himself not antagonistic. Souls games don't really have central antagonists.

Right. People equate mechanics and characters with evil purely based on names and aesthetics. Human beings are directly stated to be creatures of Dark, yet people consider dark evil. The vital humanity item itself is piece darkness. Nashandra's mechanic is called "curse," and she looks like a skeleton later, so she gets called evil. But those are just titles and appearances. What makes her, as you have put, more evil than the player character, or Shanalotte?

She tricked King Vendrick into invading the land of the giants who Vendrick was told would invade Drangleic if he did not strike first, but this was a lie. Nashandra just wanted to steal a great power from the giants. This pre-emptive attack on a seemingly peaceful civilization triggers a counter attack that all but destroys Drangleic. Regardless of whether she foresaw this retaliation or not, the attack on Drangleic was a part of the events that led her to become the sole ruler after Vendrick fully went hollow, failing to sit on the throne of want. Shanalotte was created as part of a plan to save Drangleic from the undead curse by creating a new firekeeper. She merely guides the undead on their path to the throne. Undead are driven by an unknown will, hence the theme of not knowing why you are doing things. Shanalotte and the undead are no more evil than a lion that kills a gazelle. They are merely carrying out the role fate has planned for them. In contrast, Nashandra carefully plans her actions and carries them out through deception, trickery, and theft. She wasn't willing to go through the trouble that the undead have to go through to become powerful enough to claim the throne. Instead she waits until an undead is about to rightfully take the throne and tries to usurp them at the final moment to take credit for their hard work and steal the throne so she can obtain the first flame. Nashandra is after power. Shanalotte and the undead are merely following the path fate has set out for them. The neverending cycle of light and dark.

@@Nofxthepirate Good points. Idk why I wasn't think about the whole "deceiving Vendrick" aspect. By the same token though, if the queen really is a shard of manus, then she's an embodiment of Dark itself, a sort of raw cosmic force permeating the world today, similar to the chaos and death of BoC and Nito. One might say then, that everything she does falls into the same category as the fighting and killing the undead does and planning an facilitating Shanalotte does; some unknown ("greater") will embedded in their nature prods them to it. DS2's story revisits a lot from Demon's Souls, and what I've described above puts Nashandra in a place comparable to The Old One, with Vendrick being Allant, who undergoes a similar change to Vendrick, under The Old One's influence. Would we say The Old One is evil? Does opposing it make you good? How about the Moon Presence? These may be fruitful comparisons. Nashandra just instinctive FEELS more vile than these others because she speaks to us and has some of the trappings of humanness, like if your aforementioned lion could announce its gazelle kills in human language, but was otherwise the same.

@@philosophyofiron9686 You make a good point as well. In my opinion, it's kind of all or nothing. Either every being in the world of Dark Souls is driven by powers beyond their understanding to do the things they do, or there truly is good and evil in the world. If it's the former then there is really no sense of morality to be seen anywhere in the world. Everything is essentially a pawn of fate and plays out their part of a larger plan. If it's the latter then things get much more murky. Just like the real world, who's to say what is right and what is wrong? Perhaps Nashandra believes that through obtaining power she will be able to launch the world into some kind of golden age like Gwyn believed he was doing when he fought the ancient dragons and initiated the age of fire. The story of dark souls 1 is rife with characters who believe themselves to be doing good things but they cause terrible things instead, like the witch of Izalith accidentally creating demons while trying to rekindle the first flame, or the inhabitants of Oolacile trusting the primeval serpent and allowing the abyss to corrupt their land. In the end it's all about perspective.

She's extremely selfish, manipulative, and egotistical. Those are evil qualities, regardless of where she comes from or what she is.

@@bartimaeu1 The lore is actually there but it’s well hidden. That’s the nature of souls games. Try it again on new game +. There is a lot more on Nashandra than you probably know and the fights are a lot harder on NG+.

That’s literally what anor londo and lothric castle were like. Seriously, there isn’t a single realistic room or bedroom in the entire castle. Ds1 is particularly bad, just look at how anor is literally just a platforming segment for the player and is completely impractical for anyone other than the player to traverse. Also drangleic wasn’t meant for anyone to live in, that would be the castle ruins in forest of the fallen giants. When the giants were winning vendrick lost hope and retreated into the crypt. Drangleic is pretty much just a glorified bed and throne room for the king sealing away the undead crypt

As for vendrick he was gone 99% of the time in the war or in the catacombs Edit: And i would argue Eulum loice didn't suffer the same as drangleic. Looks pretty cool, but covered in snow lol
